celebration of the victory of good over evil and it's lgbtq+ history month

here's another history lesson for indian queers

In 1987, Leela and Urmila, two policewomen from Madhya Pradesh, married each other in the first ever documented case of its kind. Their marriage was one of the first and most widely reported instance of same-sex marriage in India.

(both of them were later removed from their positions and were imprisoned. they continued to face discrimination for being 'immoral women' and for 'setting bad example over fellow women' due to which were forced to leave their village.)

hello lovely desi lgbtq+ people friendly reminder that today is *THE* day

On 2 July (1999) thirty years after the Stonewall Riots first ever pride march was organised

Image

Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk has been organising pride parades since 1999 and they continue to do so today. 🌈

It is also regarded as the oldest pride walk not just in india but also in south asia. It was called the FRIENDSHIP WALK.

The march in whole consisted of less than 20 people still they decided to take steps for the cause. The participants were wearing bright yellow t-shirts with graphic footsteps and caption "Walk on the Rainbow" some of the well known people in present were part of the parade (including Pawan Dhall, Owais Khan and Ashok Row Kavi) the participants split into two groups after a while and tried to map through all of north and south kolkata stopping at various NGOs.

The participants walked in solidarity of all the other rights movement too i.e. women's rights, dalit rights etc.

The teams reached George Bhawan which was the final destination and found the major and regional media channels waiting to cover the event.

The media coverage helped spread their voice faster than they could imagine; the media coverage also brought a lot of love and support for the participants from within the country as well as from other south asian countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh.
