Hi, welcome to the fun house. Let me help you navigate.
Funny how the captain can be trying to comfort people and just not quite find the right words and the whole of london can go "THEY SUCK AT CHEERING PEOPLE UP BANISH THEM TO THE SHADOW REALM TOMB COLONIES"
Like damn what did they do? Is fumbling their words really worth sending a ahip to venderblight in the middle of a war?
Not to make this post
Any longer, because Its Big, but also the reason the captain wears the diving helm in the first place and all those layers and gloves is specifically to hide their rubbery-ness. It's hard enough getting respect in the neath being of a lower class and an immigrant, let alone being full of alien flesh. Granted, now they're so big and clearly Off that people know something's up, but much like furnace people just wave it off because that's easier than like. Going "uhh wtf???"
Would you like to talk about your art process and what inspired your design for the Captain?
Sure! I don't really... know what my art process is. I sort of just draw? My design for the captain started with the icon. Like, the face icon i chose for them was the helmet, so i was like "oh, I'd better draw someone with a helmet on?" I think i actually have the first sketch i did of them.
Ah, no, annoyingly I don't. That's really frustrating, i can remember it in my mind. At that point they were a tall gaunt figure in a helmet wearing beige fourth city rags and nothing else. That design was shortlived, when i got back to this game, then i went to the next design that i tried doodling after the hallowmas story (the first fate story i got, where the captain got rubbery flesh sewn into them, so i went "i should add squiddy bits" and got this:
Real pale, but you can see the basic jist. I decided on long brown hair, a sort of moustachey tentacle thing like that guy from pirates of the carribbean, and a big head fan that I'm not really sure where i got it from.
Then i made a ref, well, a basic one;
That's sort of shaping up. Then when i was running this blog i was like "ok i need a BETTER ref tho" and got these:
And then tome went on and i started thinking, like, times gone on, they'll have changed more, gotten more rubbery. I liked the face, but decided to add more to it, with the idea that, given what the captain will end up being (an amalgam of curator, rubbery and fluke with very little human left) i was like "well I'd better show that its becoming increasingly big and rubbery" and started designing a bigger, older, more abstract captain, which i started on this weirdly long canvas?
I was looking at the inculating kracken to look at how octopuseses were like in fl. This was my first idea. Then i made it Big, redrew it, and used that to make a basic body shape.
Tada! See that! That's the captain coming along.
Then i added the rubbery bits, and got this.
I was like, hm, not quite there. Like i turned the facial hair into tentacles, added bits, yknow. So i was like. I know!
Beak.
Then i decided to add some colours! Bip!
Its red because most deep sea creatures are red to avoid predators, with blue because i dunno it looks nice, and lots of bioluminescence.
Oh! Right! The captain has glowy eyes because their destiny is Gleam, and i saw a tumblr post about dreams affecting eyes and went "oh pog". That's also where the title "the light-lost captain" came from! Before that, they were just schrödinger. I changed my account name because i was like "That's a cool title actually" and because like. Having glowing eyes helps when the whole person is hidden under a helmet.
You'll also see that in this version, the backs of their eyes are Pelegin, because they became a monster hunter and part of the description text for that is that you get pelegin eyes, and i wanted that but also glowing eyes, so, compromise. This is also where the pelegin patches on them later came from, because monster hunters become increasingly pelegin when they kill more monsters.
I added them at the same time i added the tattoos they got:
They're also based on the text descriptions! I vaguely recalled the sun tattoo having cosmogone, so i looked up victorian tattoos to see what kind of designs they might make, and made a fun sun design in the colour of cosmogone. And the zee monster description is like
"A long dash of jade-green and peligin. At first glance, it looks unfinished. On the second glance, it resolves into terror."
And because they have pelegin patches i was like "oh cool! I'll draw a scrimshaw-y design that kind of appears and disappears out of the pelegin! And i added apocyan because that's zee colours. Some of the tentacles have cosmogone on them when they're near the sun tattoo.
The captain's clothing has mostly always been similar, because i use their usual clothes, which for a long time was a pickpocket's bane or a fourth city rags. Recently i made a little outfit thing to show their layers. They use a hairnet to keep their big frills down inside the helmet. They don't use the coat much ingame now, but it looks nice.
So, yeah! Uh. Yknow.
I found an unfinished sketch layer of the captain before the Fuckening,
Not much going on here but i can sort of see the outline of a coat, knitwear(?) And a lot of facial hair.
Oh right. I forgot to mention. The reason the captain is fat now is because a lot of sea creatures who live in cold sea environments are fat. They're sort of like, seal shaped, with all the blubber you'd need to survive in the freezing depths, because i imagine the zee is cold and so is whatever planet the rubbery men come from.
The fins and bits just help smooth their shape in the water, it's why they've got from random fins where the flesh was sewn in randomly to the body reshaping to be like, symmetrical. Half a fin won't help in the water.
And the reason they have gill slits on their cheeks is because i read somewhere that someone was like talking to a marine biologist about how mermaids would breathe if they had gills and they said that the gills would probably be on their cheeks because that's an area that would get a lot of water flowing past it. And there's more gills on their chest because i figure if you get really big you need more oxygen and those little face gills wouldn't cut it. Those pink ribby things are gills btw. I also added more little gill outcrops at their waist because like. They're still getting bigger. They'll need more oxygen. And it looks nice :)
Oh and the reason they keep getting bigger is because of deep sea gigantism. Their tail is small because at the moment they're swimming with their limbs, but the more they change the bigger the tail will get, because the evolution of all sea animals pretty much says yeah, swimming by paddling your legs is waaaay less effective than turning your body into a paddle. It's better to have short limbs and lots of tail tbh.
Can you guess that im interested in biology
It's from heart's desire! The captain wins and is like "can you fix the gaping hole in my existence that never seems to go away" and the masters <- causers of the grief are like "mmm, best we can do is giant bat, boss." And the captain, who's life is already a fucking nightmare and who can't really recognise themselves in the mirror anymore anyway is like "if that's the best I'll get" so they're like "great! We can purge the Nasty Alien(not us) ness out of you by making you into a curator. This'll go well"
Instead they get a fucked up tentacle bat and they're like "whoops" and the captain is like "yeah i don't know what i expected" and technically they're Mr.Cards but because they've always been a sailor they really end up hoarding shipwrecks, so they take a dual role a la hearts/apples as Mr.Cards and Mr. Docks. Unlike the other masters they are Overtly Clear about the fact they are both masters. They don't even stop being a pirate or a monster hunter either. It's very much just a "hey honey you know that weird giant who helped us with our plumbing? Apparently they're a sea monster now." "Are they still going to fix the drains?" "I think so" situation

The captain is out here in the middle of a warzone like "okay. I get it. Armageddon. But can i get 20 courier pigeons here so i can send out all these farming funbucks?" Like who is sending all these tokens out. Whos job is this
I have 160 fate spare, so I might as well give some out.
Seriously, just message me if i can help. I buy fate every so often and usually end up accumulating some i don't need.
110 fate left!
(By horticultural tokens i mean estival tokens i just forgot the name, whoops)
If i get 3 people, I'll give you 50 each, if more than 3 people want some, i will give it out in groups of ten.
One funny thing about the captain's backstory, considering like the mechanics of the game and wiping your ambition is like.
Mr. Cups went to all the problem of getting and killing the Captain's daughter like "hehehehe i will get good stories out of this! Let's get some sad parents down here!!!" And the Captain is just like "mmm. This sucks. I choose to forget" and decides to go bother an entirely different master by starting the marvellous early.
Mr Cups must be so pissed. Like. It did ALL this and then they just fuck off to play cards with Mr.Pages??????? Seething
Me, opening up Fallen London after a LONG time: Ooh, I'm gonna respond to that one person!!! I wonder if they're even still active anymore!! Oh man, I wonder where to begin with everything!!!! The very same day, the patron's response, literally word for word from my inbox: "There is a massive stalactite where the Glasshouse was in Watchmaker hill, Starved Men are invading, the Admiralty is levelling half the city in the process of beating them back, and you want lessons!? Grab a bl__dy rifle and get to learning!"
Working on making refs for the captain's tattoos while im waiting for FL to like. Work. The Cosmogone sun is easy, but now i have to figure out what the hell is going on with the pelegin and apocyan monster. I was all like "It's going to look like its coming out of the pelegin patches on their skin" which is great but like. Where does it begin and end
Though i need to update their body ref too now they have another eyeball on one of their tentacles.
Me like "ah I'll have a look at the original ref art of them to figure out what was going on with the tattoos"
. Hm.
Should i just like... take this straight off for the tattoo ref? It looks weird without the pelegin patches.
Right. Well, this is where we're at.
A little harder to resize than the sun, mind, with all the little lines
Well, I've slapped it on its own thing. Do you guys think i should like. Redraw the whole thing with sharper lines for a clearer ref or like. Is this good enough

Update: if you are a pirate you can get a hunt from your parrot about this mess. Wonderful news!
Unfortunately the captain is still sinking.
New update: everyone in fl is so desperate to help find ways to die that give information that the site is lagging to a stop. Lovely community.
