[ID: Cartoon of a light-skinned blind person with sunglasses, a white cane, and a yellow service dog standing next to a sign that says “IMPORTANT NOTICE” in bold red letters. Under this is a wall of black text on a white background, reading:
“I wanted to make people aware... guide dogs haven’t been trained in social distancing and queuing to get in a shop. If you see a guide dog heading straight for the shop door and not joining the queue, that is what they have been trained to do. They’re not being rude or intentionally queue jumping. Also, if you see them walking down the street, remember, they haven’t been trained to social distance, so it is up to us, the sighted people, to give them space. Hope that helps my many guide dog owner friends in these really difficult and challenging times.”

chadwick boseman acted in all of those films, and went to all of those interviews, and showed up to all of those events while battling with stage iii and iv colon cancer. for four years...four. he didn't say a word about whatever he may have been struggling through or whatever pain he endured. both mentally and physically. he didn't want anyone to worry and always tried to present his "best" self to us. he was truly such a special person, and an immense influence to so many people, but especially to black youth. today is a tragic day, and his passing is a loss beyond comprehension. he was only 43. rest in peace.
"you have to cherish things in a different way when you know the clock is ticking, you are under pressure." - chadwick boseman (nov. 29, 1977 - aug. 28, 2020)
In the film, [Florence] Pugh’s adult Amy outlines this philosophy in a monologue that illustrates her maturity. “I’m just a woman,” she tells Laurie (played by Timothée Chalamet, another Lady Bird alum) while both are in Europe.
[Greta] Gerwig didn’t have the speech in her script initially. [Meryl] Streep convinced her to include it, pointing out to the writer-director that she had to make clear to the audience why there’s so much pressure on Amy to marry, and to marry well. Amy is the one tasked with keeping the March family afloat, given Meg’s marriage to a poor teacher, Jo’s refusal to be engaged to Laurie—a man she considers more of a brother than a lover—and Beth’s illness.
Amy is the sister with the greatest understanding of how her femininity could work for her. “There’s something about Amy,” Gerwig said. “Jo can’t put her ego aside long enough to get what she needs to get, but Amy can. It’s just, I loved that [Europe] section of the book … I wanted that feeling in it, of Amy’s utter practicality when it comes to how to get ahead.”
Help urgently needed!!
*URGENT: PLEASE READ/SIGNAL BOOST*
Saturday, August 22nd: Hi everyone, I’m Gemma, a bi, mentally ill disaster, who’s in desperate need of help, as I'm still struggling to pay off my late bills and debt.
As most of you are already aware, I have been struggling financially for quite some time due to my welfare benefits being revoked, under the UK’s controversial changes to how benefits are assessed and assigned. And due to my mental health and some unfortunate DWP mess-ups, my benefits have been on and off sanctions for the past year.
And earlier in the year, I attended a medical assessment for my U.C benefit, the results stated that I have a limited capability for work due to my chronic depression and extreme fatigue. However, despite this, my benefits were suspended without warning or explanation. I appealed against my benefit suspension, and recently I received my reinstated U.C payment, however, due to being in such heavy debt, it was taken immediately by creditor's and fees.
To be quite honest, these past few months have been absolute hell for me, and with no income, I’ve been relying on the kindness of others to get by. However, due to quite a lot of late bills, fees and rent to be paid, it’s been difficult for me to stay out of debt and it just keeps building up and I'm now back in the red, as my bank account is in the negative due to late bills and I still have other bills to pay and groceries to get.
If anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1/€1, it would literally save my life, and sharing definitely helps just as much as donations. Nobody is obligated in any way to donate if they can’t or don’t want to, I know we’re all struggling right now.
Thank you for your help!! ♥️

She/her also personally fought against transwomen in prison seeking gender affirmation surgery…
Here’s an article that gives more details on the story, and what Harris said about it. The key points:
- It was the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation that refused the surgery to the inmates. When the inmates fought the policy in court, as Attorney General of California, it was Harris’s job to represent the Department. Yes, she did it, but it wasn’t something she decided on her own to do. (Also, not for nothing, the inmates won the case.)
- Her characterization of the episode: “On that issue I will tell you I vehemently disagree and in fact worked behind the scenes to ensure that the Department of Corrections would allow transitioning inmates to receive the medical attention that they required, they needed and deserved,” Harris said.
- A policy now exists for inmates to receive transition-related care in California prisons (although apparently the DoC isn’t doing a great job of holding up its end of the bargain*–quelle surprise).
(*For the record, Harris finished her time as AG and became a Senator shortly after this agreement was reached, so it’s someone else’s job now to enforce it.)
The thing to keep in mind here is that, as Attorney General, Kamala Harris couldn’t wave her hand and have everything in the entire California Department of Justice go exactly as she wanted it–and she won’t be able to as Vice President, either. We currently have a president who thinks that’s how it works, and we’re damned lucky he’s wrong.
She had (and will have to) work with large number of people who hold different views. (Another article I read said that the California Department of Justice, which she ran as AG, employs about 4,800 people–that’s a lot of different views.) If she had refused to back the Department of Corrections in their case, she would have alienated people whose cooperation she needed to be able to rely on. (If she even had the option of not backing them and staying AG–I’m not sure how it works, exactly.) Even people who agreed with her about the specific matter might have disapproved of her hanging her subordinates out to dry. (Another thing our current president does constantly–notice how Harris isn’t saying that the person in her office who actually wrote these briefs is a bad guy that she barely knew.)
So here’s what actually happened when Kamala Harris “fought against transwomen in prison seeking gender affirmation surgery”:
- The Department of Corrections had a policy denying gender-affirmation surgery to inmates.
- Two inmates fought that policy in court.
- Harris defended that policy in court (or, more accurately, was the supervisor of the person who did so–but the legal documents went out under her signature, and she takes responsibility for their content).
- Harris also worked to change the policy.
If you’ve had a job, you’ve probably been in the position of having to carry out a policy that you don’t agree with. Your choices are to quit your job in protest or stay and argue that the policy should change. If you pick option B, you still have to follow the policy while you’re working to change it–again, just about the only person in the world who doesn’t know this is Donald J. Trump, because he’s never had a real job where he answered to anybody.
What this incident shows is that Kamala Harris is accustomed to working in a system where she doesn’t always get her own way, and that she knows how to lose the battle to win the war. As VP, she’s going to need those skills–especially if the Republicans keep the Senate, but even if the Democrats sweep everything in November, we’re notoriously bad at all pulling in the same direction. We’ve had about enough of the “I’m taking my ball and going home” style of leadership.
This.
I get it, I really do - but Trump has literally stripped away rights from trans kids and fucked the careers of trans people in the military. Pence believes in conversion therapy.
We can remember and discuss these issues, but at the end of the day, Trump/Pence is the greater evil and we need to vote in a unified way to get them out of office because the second term would be so much worse. Don’t vote independent, just suck it up and recognize that we’re not gonna get a perfect candidate ever.
Voting Trump is a face full of glass shards, and a vote for an independent is a vote for Trump. This isn’t complicated.
I had not seen this explanation, and I’m reblogging it because I probably have followers who haven’t either.
How to Draw Native People: a Tutorial/Reference Guide
As requested, here is a basic guide for how to draw Indigenous peoples (mostly focused on North America)! Also please note that this is not an exhaustive list of Native American phenotypes/features, and more like an intro on very common features that can be found in us, and even then, not altogether at once on a single person’s face. I highly encourage the use of references and care taken into research when drawing. I may do a part 2 that goes slightly more into depth, but for now, enjoy part one.
Resouces:
- How to draw Native Skin tutorial (don’t draw us red!)
- List of Native American Celebrities, which include their tribe(s) and home country, with 1,250 names, to use for your referencing pleasure
- How to draw black people by Peachdeluxe, & Black hair in depth by misslaney for mixed black Natives
- How to draw East Asian People, a guide by Chuwenjie, for mixed Asian Natives AND because it includes a lovely tutorial on monolid eyes, a shared feature of Native people

Instead of making internet services more affordable for Canadians, the Liberals sided with Canada’s largest telecom companies in their appeal of an August 2019 CRTC decision to lower wholesale rates. During this pandemic, Canadians are more dependent than ever on high-speed internet connection for work, school and essential services.
“During COVID 19, the need for accessible and affordable high-speed broadband internet has become obvious to all Canadians,” said NDP Critic for Telecommunications, Brian Masse. “Instead of making fast and reliable internet connection more affordable for Canadians, the Liberals are worried about rich telecom corporations losing profits. They are clearly on the wrong side and Canadians deserve better.”
While the Liberals are making the internet more expensive to help large telecom companies, in Canada, 63 percent of rural households do not have access to high speed internet. In the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut, no households have access to high-speed broadband. During this public health emergency, the situation has gotten worse for Canadians in rural and remote areas.
“Canada’s largest telecom companies have been lobbying the Liberal government extensively to protect their profits and it shows,” said Masse. “Liberals will always stand up for big corporations while Canadians are struggling to make ends meet in this pandemic. New Democrats will continue to fight for affordable and more reliable high-speed broadband internet for all Canadians.”

Honestly as a blind person I’m so tired of seeing fictional blind characters who don’t use white canes or other guides. “They have special powers so they know what’s around them” or “they’re confident enough to not need a guide” are common tropes, and I’m tired.
Are people scared that using a white cane will make their blind character seem weak? They can’t use a cane because they’re so special that they already know what’s around them, and other blind people who use guides are inferior because they’re not special?
I’m tired. Give your blind characters white canes and other guides. Let them hold onto their friends, let them have guide dogs. Don’t make white cane users feel ostracized for not being “strong enough” to go without.
Another thing that pisses me off is when a sighted character comes up with the fantasy equivalent of braille and teaches it to the blind character. Braille was invented by Louis Braille, a blind man, in 1824. The blind character should be the one coming up with it.
Tldr I’m blind and tired of sighted people lol

Vancouver-born movie star Ryan Reynolds has a simple message for young people across British Columbia: Don’t kill my mom.
In an audio recording posted to Twitter Friday morning, Reynolds discouraged young people from partying and potentially spreading COVID-19.
“I hope young people in B.C. don’t kill my mom frankly. Or David Suzuki. Or each other. Let’s not kill anyone. That’s reasonable,” Reynolds said.
The recording was in response to a comment earlier this week from B.C. Premier John Horgan asking both Reynolds and actor Seth Rogen to help get the message out about the virus.

Over 13,000 Canadians have now signed a petition in support of a recently proposed motion for creating a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income (GLBI).
This comes after Angus Reid polling in June that showed that 60% of Canadians support a form of basic income beyond the current pandemic.
Driving the news: On August 10th, 2020, the New Democrat Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre, Leah Gazan, proposed a motion, M-46, for the implementation of a GLBI to replace the CERB.
“COVID-19 has demonstrated that we do have the resources. We must ensure all individuals in Canada can thrive in dignity and that means making investments to ensure basic human rights for all.”
A form of Universal Basic Income (UBI), a GLBI aims to ensure that all Canadians, based on their location, would be given the right to meet what is considered a “living income”, for their given area, supplemented by the government.

That, in the opinion of the House, the Government of Canada should introduce legislation and work with provincial and territorial governments and Indigenous peoples to ensure that a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income (i) accounting for regional differences in living costs, (ii) for all Canadians over the age of 18, including single persons, students, families, seniors, persons with disabilities, temporary foreign workers, permanent residents, and refugee claimants, (iii) paid on a regular basis, (iv) not requiring participation in the labour market, education or training in order to be eligible, (v) in addition to current and future government public services and income supports meant to meet special, exceptional and other distinct needs and goals rather than basic needs, including accessible affordable social housing and expanded health services, replace the Canada Emergency Response Benefit on an ongoing and permanent basis in a concerted effort to eradicate poverty and ensure the respect, dignity and security of all persons in respect of Canada’s domestic and international legal obligations.
