They didn’t use the other lane to get into the tunnel because can trucks this big need a lot of space for turns. they turn very wide, and if it had started on the “inside” lane of the curve, it would have hit one of the walls on entry. the driver is making sure to get as much space as they can on the descent to avoid that–part of why this is so impresive is how well the driver understands their truck’s physics and took a curve this tight.
There’s many diagrams about how cab trucks need to make weirdly wide turns like this, here’s one that demonstrates it pretty well

this is my favorite Meyer Lansky story.
my second favorite Meyer Lansky story is about the time, many years later, that he was at a meeting of mafia heads and one of them started bragging about how his son was following him into the family business.
Meyer Lansky said “That’s nice. My son works for NASA.”
