Will this be my last post?

Probably not, in the grand scheme of things, but I am cutting my internet time way down. Tumblr is a time-suck I'm not interested in pursuing at the moment, no matter how many Tilda pictures it can bring me! For now I'm not going to delete my account, so there are links to the side, you can find me on Twitter or Instagram (librarianfm) if you want to be in touch. <3

François Nars doesn’t like to do anything predictable, even in his choice of campaign models, the latest of whom is quirky British actress Tilda Swinton, who will be the face of Nars’ spring campaign. Past choices have included Charlotte Rampling and Daphne Guinness. “I love [Tilda’s] bold style and really admire her work,” Nars told WWD, adding that he chose the fiftysomething Swinton in part because of the roles she chooses as an actress, such as in the films “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” “As an actress, she brings such strong personality to the camera,” continued Nars. “And as a woman, she lives the experience of transformation and expression.”

5 random wordy facts about me

I was tagged by not-evenly-distributed, so here they are!

1. (inspired by Ryan's first fact) I also used to have a few radio shows, when I was doing my undergrad and worked at the radio station. Favourite shows included "Cult Heroes" with my friend Bess where we played random ephemeral songs from days gone by, from Tom Lehrer to Sun-La-Shan, and then also "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" which was dedicated to the glory of childhood Saturday mornings and apparently my friends listened to my chirpiness usually hungover.

2. The radio show of my dreams that I never got around to making (and it still saddens me) was to be a punk and glam show titled "Vandals and Narcissists".

3. The first time I ever went on a plane was when I was 18, by myself. I love planes partially for the fact that I'm never convinced we're not going to crash. For some reason the lack of certainty and potential death makes me incredibly calm.

4. Despite fact number 3 and being fine with planes, I'm terrified of going on an ocean liner. I'm afraid of large boats and shipwrecks turn my stomach. I don't like swimming under water near things that I can't see very well, and even just a photo of a shipwreck, like in books about the Titanic, etc, makes me feel like throwing up. It's very strange.

5. A friend and I once decided to rent an apartment near on-the-spot due to a quick succession of bizarre and outrageously coincidental references to 1994 Jeremy Piven movie PCU. I don't regret the choice. Also I feel like if I saw that movie for the first time now I would have a different response to it, but it has become a weirdly sentimental part of my life (wtf I know right?)

Neil, I am curious how you found your way to the internet. Your responses to queries here always read as though you put far too much thought into them for this crazy, click-baity place. Do you think you lost your way on a sojourn to some idyllic place where people speak without ALL-CAPS and merely resigned yourself to this, or was it a conscious choice?

I was here when all this was fields.

I remember the first few bulletin boards springing up, down by the pond, then there was Compuserve and Genie, they were up and they were down, and then there was blogs on websites, and now it’s wall to wall internet as far as the eye can see…

So much how I feel.

Today In Solidarity (10.5.14): Voter Registration surges in Ferguson in the wake of Mike Brown’s death. The ballot box is not a singular or final solution to dismantling the systems of oppression in Ferguson and beyond, but it’s certainly an important area to focus on. Remember, the current city council/government is disproportionately white due in large part to voter apathy. It’s not too late to get registered, but many state deadlines are coming up this week! For more info visit: VOTE MISSOURI or Rock the Vote.

There’s no place where you can affect change more directly or effectively than at the local level. Don’t sleep on municipal elections. #staywoke #farfromover

Textured Type

I can’t believe that a year has shot past since I met up with Bobby Evans to talk about his highly recognisable poster work and how his much imitated vintage style developed. This week sees the launch of his studio’s reincarnation as Telegramme Paper Co. which maintains its emphasis on screen printed designs and gig posters but has now expanded to include home wares, custom wedding invites and hand-painted signs.

Kate Brighthouse has joined Telegramme and the pair’s shared passion for vintage and mid-Century illustration style looks to be very complimentary.

The new designs continue their masterful use of retro colour palettes and ‘off-register’, textured illustration style. I’m of course drawn to the more typographic designs. I think the blend of customised typefaces, textures and imaginative themes still set the bar for this type of Illustration work.

“With a joint love of fine paper goods and the lost joy of sending and receiving post, Bobby & Kate run the Award Winning Telegramme Paper Co. from their studio in North London.”

The real problem with people fussing over Pluto all the time is it represents the priorities of the public - preserving traditions rather than accepting facts. The pursuit of science is about building a sustainable catalog of truths, and there is no advantage in altering truths to appease nostalgia.

With all the heat Anita Sarkeesian gets for her Tropes series, you’d think it was a new topic, but Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert had a discussion on a similar theme when they were talking about the influx of slasher movies on their show in 1980.

I can’t believe this post made it to my dash with this valuable commentary deleted. This is the entire reason that this show came up in the first place. Here’s the Polygon article that broached the subject. It’s incredibly relevant to entertainment media of all kinds today.

Part 1 was already linked by the OP, but here’s part 2 of the show for convenience. (x)
