A light in my house suddenly turned on- AND WHO DO I SEE?!?!
Consider: a gay dude and a lesbian who are BEST friends and also dating the same person but not each other because they are a gay dude and a lesbian but their mutual partner has a weird enough gender for it to work
Polycule that's lgbt like all at once
i have this disease called i will open your message and get distracted and forget to reply and then the notification will be gone so i will not have replied for ages and you will think i am ignoring you but. i am not. it’s incurable
all this fucking talk of "stealing" with the queer community. "gays are stealing from lesbians" "aces are stealing from gays" "transes are stealing from everyone" absolutely convinced white queers learned about cultural appropriation and decided it could be applied to sexuality and gender and it became entrenched becuz ppl are fucking obsessed with gatekeeping and exclusionism
besties, we are all in the alphabet soup together. the lines between us are blurred as hell. we are not stealing, we are inspired. our culture is bright and beautiful and a street fair that everyone trades at. quit being so goddamn individualistic and embrace the community. it's the only way we have solidarity
Yeah I'm convinced a big reason we got to this point is that white people took the real legitimate concept of cultural appropriation, eviscerated it of any recognition of colonialism or racism or Christian hegemony, and then restuffed it with the less challenging idea of private property
I feel lied to. This is where the bugs bunny NO meme cokes from
Ah lads they fucking rotated him
I do not like the fact that we are drifting back towards a pearl-clutching anti-obscenity anti-vulgarity ‘everything depicted in fiction must be morally sound and uncomplicated’ state.
“who is we?” SOCIETY AT LARGE. MEDIA. This is not about your fucking fandom beef. We are re-entering a book burning Hays Code era and it is fucking terrifying.
Yall wanna hear a kinda funny, kinda sad story about my grandmother and hetero-normativity?
Ok, so... when my grandmother was in her 50s (I was an infant), she met a woman at the Unitarian Church. And, as can happen when you meet your soul mate, this event made it impossible for her to deny parts of herself that she had fiercely hidden her whole life.
All the drama- their affair being found out, the divorce with my grandfather, the court battle over who got the house, happened while I was a baby. Even in my earliest memories, it's just Mama Jo and Oma, and my grandfather lived elsewhere (first his own apartment, then a nursing home, then with us.)
But here's the thing- no one ever explained any of this to me. No one ever sat down and was like "hey, Rosie, so do you know what a lesbian is?" It was the 90s. It was Texas. I think my mom was still kinda processing all this, and just assumed that like... I was gonna figure it out. Don't mention it, let it just be normal. Like I think my mom thought that if she explained the situation, she would be making it weird? I dunno.
But like. In the 90s, in all the movies I had seen and books I had read, do you know how many same sex couples I had seen? Like. 0. Do you know how many "platonic best friend/roommates" I had seen? A lot. I had no context, is what I'm saying.
I literally thought this was a Golden Girls, roommates, besties situation until I was like...I dunno, 11? 12?
It was actually their parrot, an African Grey named Spike, imitating my grandmothers voice saying "Johanna, honey, it's getting late", that triggered the MIND BLOWN moment as I realized that *there's only one master bedroom and it only has 1 waterbed* when all the pieces finally clicked.
Anyway. I think it's a real important thing for kids to know queer people exist, for a lot of reasons, but also because kids can be clueless and it's embarrassing to have your grandmother be outted by a parrot because everyone just thought you'd figure it out on your own.
Anyway, here is my grandma and her wife, Oma, after they moved to Albuquerque to be artsy gay cowboys and live their best life. They helped run a "Lesbian Dude Ranch" out there (basically just with funding and financial support. As Oma has explained "traditionally, most lesbians don't have a lot of money" so they wrote the checks and let the younger ladies actually run the ranch.)
hannibal’s name rhyming with cannibal is like vague enough to be a coincidence but he’s also a fancy chef who always serves organ meat and/or raw meat dishes that exactly line up with whatever body part disappeared from the FBI’s most recent batch of bodies, and he serves it to the FBI, who doesn’t notice
Who’s the biggest weed dealer in Baltimore? I have to consult my friend Hannibis Lecter, the renowned gardener
“Authors should not be ALLOWED to write about–” you are an anti-intellectual and functionally a conservative
“This book should be taken off of shelves for featuring–” you are an anti-intellectual and functionally a conservative
“Schools shouldn’t teach this book in class because–” you are an anti-intellectual and functionally a conservative
“Nobody actually likes or wants to read classics because they’re–” you are an anti-intellectual and an idiot
“I only read YA fantasy books because every classic novel or work of literary fiction is problematic and features–” you are an anti-intellectual and you are robbing yourself of the full richness of the human experience.
"you are functionally a conservative" is such a good and clarifying insult
Literally right after I saw this post, I saw another post in a discord chat for BOOK EDITORS in which an outspokenly liberal editor talked about how Nabokov should have never been published because he wrote about p*dophiles and described women's bodies in ways that made her uncomfortable. She described his writing as "objectively terrible" and said she wanted to burn his books. And other editors were bringing up classics they didn't like and talking about how they wanted to throw them in the trash. This wasn't like a light "unpopular opinion!" conversation. This was actual book editors talking about how books should be destroyed and censored.
There is something so scary and toxic in global culture right now. The revival of fascism is influencing everyone's mindset and approach to art, regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum.
I see far more books being censored today than when I was a kid. Librarians handed me The Catcher in the Rye, The Sexual Politics of Meat, and Animal Farm when I was literally 8-11. My mom would never have taken a book away from me. I read everything from the Tao Te Ching to the Qur'an to atheist texts under my desk at school. Teachers thought nothing of it or encouraged it. Books seemed universally acknowledged as sacrosanct to me.
Now I can't find any adults who don't hesitate or want to make exceptions when it comes to censorship. Even the most liberal social activist librarians I know go, "well except for book X..."
Functionally conservative. It's so important to have the language to express that.
Thank you for this addition!
it's literally all about having a primary public gender and a secondary personal gender
And a third jellicle gender

Midwestern Democrats are on fire recently. Over the last few weeks, the Minnesota legislature has passed measures which would turn the state into one of the closest things the US has to a social democracy. They have passed bills:
- creating universal paid leave
- codifying abortion rights
- legalizing weed
- making public college free for families earning under $80k
- universalizing free school lunches and increasing public education funding
- creating plans for 100% carbon-free energy by 2040
- investing more in public housing and homelessness prevention programs
- creating a new child tax credit to cut child poverty
- creating a refuge for those seeking trans healthcare
- instituting automatic voter registration
- expanding voting rights to former felons
- banning anti-gay "conversion therapy"
- creating a new tax to fund public transit
- banning worker non-compete agreements
- strengthening anti-trust rules in healthcare
- creating new labor protections for gig economy drivers, teachers, construction workers, warehouse workers, and more
- investing in efforts to prevent chemical pollution
- creating billions in bonds for public infrastructure and lands
- strengthening gun purchase background checks
- indexed the gas tax to inflation
- creating a public board to regulate pharmaceutical costs
- increasing support for public defenders, and
- expanding access to health insurance and drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants
- and still more!!!
Extremely, unfathomably based

You ever start mangling a phrase as a joke and then keep using it for so long that it just completely and inironically replaces that phrase in your vocabulary? And that spreads through your whole social circle?
Yeah.
