RESPECT FOR ‘JOJO LOVE’: Golden Wind Director Duo reveal the secret story behind the production of Golden Wind.

Big interview at Livedoornews with directors Yasuhiro Kimura and Hideya Takahashi re: the final arc of Vento Aureo and overall impressions of the season.  Interview’s linked through twitter.com/livedoornews/status/1197802655633965056. Here’s some highlights, there’s more revelations in the article but this is a start. fwiw TL’s my own and a little loose:

  • Kimura and Takahashi view Episode 37 (King of Kings, the ep where Giorno’s Requiem form awakens) as the series’s ‘real’ finale and final episode. The two episodes that followed aired two weeks after and felt more like a ‘festival’ for the staff.
  • Kimura originally contemplated putting ’Sleeping Slaves’ at the start of the series (where it belongs chronologically) before deciding it was best to keep it as an epilogue.
  • There were almost no retakes in recording due to the actors’ commitment to their characters. When were asked which actor’s 'Jojo Love’ was particularly strong, both Kimura and Takahashi agreed: Junichi Suwabe (CV: Leone Abbacchio).
  • Kensho Ono put a lot of work into his 'Muda Rush’ voicework and re-recorded numerous takes to get it right. Ono’s voicing in Ep.19 (White Album) where he addresses Mista was another recording session Kimura recalls as intense.  In both scenes, Ono’s love and enthusiasm for the work and his role was apparent.
  • Toriumi Kōsuke voiced Giorno Mista but he also voiced Sex Pistols which meant he wound up voicing seven different characters! Since each bullet has a different personality, each of the six tracks were recorded separately before being mixed in post-production.
  • Kimura describes Jojo as 'Pro Wrestling.’
  • Takahashi’s favorite Part 5 character - by far - is Narancia. 'It’s no exaggeration to say that I accepted the offer to direct Part 5 for Narancia.’  Naturally, Takahashi was in charge of all the Narancia episodes. He thinks of Ep.28 (Beneath a Sky on the Verge of Falling) as not just Abbacchio’s episode but also Narancia’s.
  • Kimura says that Mista’s his Part 5 favorite. (In Kimura’s bio at the end of the interview, it’s revealed that his overall favorite Jojo character is Father Pucci.)
  • There was no final 'Gold Experience Requiem’ version of the Opening in the initial concept. However, after switching the opening to a 'Diavolo version’ starting at Ep.34, Kimura thought it would get boring if it remained the same through the finale so he came up with the final GER version as a twist.
  • It was also Kimura’s idea to give Giorno his father’s iconic back-turned pose in the finale. Upon entering the city of Rome, Kimura notes that Giorno has ‘a fairly DIO-ish look.’
