Three Worlds Apart

@letter-airy / letter-airy.tumblr.com

Digital Letterer for Ringside, From Under Mountains, 8House: Arclight, Firebug, and numerous Little Foolery projects, such as Small Town Witch and Sfeer Theory.

Bye tumblr!

Twitter: @CommentAiry

You’ll find me on twitter if you’d like to see me around. I’m pretty active on there but it’s mostly to talk about comics that I’m either helping with or promoting the works of my highly talented friends. Oh, and of course chat about lettering. So if that’s up your alley, feel free to check it out.

I haven’t logged into tumblr for quite a while and doing so again reminded me how much more ads there were than before. I think I’ll be okay without it. I may delete my account one day, if I manage to move my Lettering tag posts over to a blog and such. For now, that’s all still there.

Call for Subs: The Watsonain

Hey friend! Have you written Sherlock Holmes meta? Fiction? Poetry? Book review? List of favorite scenes? Made some great art? Want to see on a page, hold it in your hands? The John H. Watson Society, a web-based open and inclusive Sherlock Holmes society, is looking for submissions to our twice-yearly print journal.

The Society welcomes scholarly papers, articles, original fiction, miscellanea or other submissions. One need not be an experienced or academic writer; some of our most engaging articles come from individuals with a love for the writing and appreciation for the pleasures gained over the years. There is always room for your research, thoughts, ideas and creativity. The Society is an inclusive group; we desire interested Watsonians to take part and to approach the Society with innovative projects. Whether you are a first time author is not important; that you try is what counts.

The deadline for the October Fall issue is August 1 and the deadline for the April Spring issue is February 15. Late submissions will be considered if possible.

Submissions should be up-to-date Word documents and sent via email attachment to: publisher@johnhwatsonsociety.com

I took over the role of Editor-in-Chief this summer and am excited and honored to be reading your submissions. If you have any questions please also direct them to that email address and they will come to me!

For more information, check out http://johnhwatsonsociety.com/the-watsonian/. As with all? most? other Holmes journals there is no compensation for your submission, but I would love to expand our diversity of voices. I know some of you have some amazing metas written and I’d be thrilled to help you turn it into an essay for print. Or art, I want your art, I’m greedy for your amazing art.

Love,

Elinor

Hazel Scott playing two pianos at the same damn time with ease

Hazel Scott was a musical sorcerer and a civil rights hero.   She:

  •  was admitted to Julliard at 8.
  • was performing in top venues by 16.
  • pioneered “swinging the classics” and made the equivalent of a million dollars a year doing it.
  • was the first person of color to have their own national TV show.
  • went to Hollywood but refused to be cast as a “singing maid.”  Demanded and got control over her casting, her wardrobe, and how footage featuring her was cut.
  • refused to perform in segregated venues and led charges for integration in several northern cities, notably Spokane.

She was brought down by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, and has been largely forgotten.  But she was a sorcerer, and a hero.

1) This is real. 2) The idea for this did come from author/actress/comedian Sara Benincasa experiences of watching an episode of American Gods and going to Cheesecake Factory blending in her subconscious (via Eater) 3) They’ve already raised $68,707 4) Here’s Neil Gaiman performing a commencement speech in case you forgot how lovely his voice sounds. 5) Here’s the Cheesecake Factory menu in case you forgot how massive and indulgent it is. 6) They’re trying to reach the goal of $500,000 by June 20th, World Refugee Day. 7) Again, this is real. 8) Donate to this delightfully silly and great thing here on CrowdRise.

Agents of Sin. Each operator is paired with a demon each representing a sin. They all posses unique attributes/abilities and alter their host in different ways. As such each fulfills a certain purpose within their unit. Due to their unique situation they operate in the shadows with few knowing of their existence.

Agents of Virtue. Each agent is paired with an angel representing a virtue that helps them fulfill a specific role within their squad. Noble in their purpose and swift in their dealing of justice they maintain the balance between worlds.

1:Kindness, Powerful but frail magic user.

A former student of my wife has been hospitalized when he stood up to a white supremacist harassing two Muslim women on the Portland MAX line. The other two people who stood up were murdered.

He’s a great human being at the beginning of his life and could use all our help getting better. If you can’t donate, please share and signal boost.
