the "i definitely do NOT have feelings for them in any way shape or form" while obviously crushing on them trope might be cliché to you. it's about being doomed from the start, the desperate denial of the starved self, the tragic inevitably of love to me tho

"i'm not in love with them" oh, honey. you are already so ruined. you have been ruined from the moment you met, and you will be ruined long after you part. your attempts to hide are futile. you cannot escape that which is everywhere and everything. love as a punishment, love as a death sentence. love as god.

Aziraphale + Emotional Expressiveness

Aziraphale spends the vast majority of Good Omens generally delightfully happy and jovial (usually with a smile on his face) or worried and fretting. Sometimes he pouts around Crowley, or is uncomfortable around other angels, but his emotions are usually pretty obvious. He is a very expressive character.

It’s actually one of the reasons more of us (myself included) should probably have picked up on the switch in episode 6, as Crowley as Aziraphale is considerably less effusive.

His face is still in a way that is very un-Aziraphale

image

Which is why the moment that Michael Sheen believes Aziraphale fell in love with Crowley is so important; is why his expression becomes even more weighty. Because, unlike what we are used to from Aziraphale, it is a very small, nuanced expression.

When contrasted with the rest of the series, the subtleness of this scene is very apparent. In contrast to Crowley, who is generally more subtle and level with his emotions, whose outbursts of emotion are more noteworthy (”I lost my best friend”), Aziraphale is very expressive in his emotions, and so the moments where Aziraphale is still and has less expression are often the ones in which the most interesting stuff is going on, and the ones which tell you the most about him.

This was, I believe, the last scene Michael Sheen filmed, and so by this point he was pretty used to his character’s personality. He made the decision to play this scene - a scene with so much emotional charge and impact - with such a subtle play of expression, and that subtlety pays off. It highlights rather that detracts from Aziraphale’s emotional state. It is him entirely without barriers, no smiles to hide behind, just completely and utterly stripped bare by his personal revelation.

I’m not saying that Aziraphale’s expressive personality isn’t his true personality, because it definitely is, but I think that the big moments are often shown in his interiorisation, rather than expression, of those emotions.

Another noticeable instance of this is the scene at the Nunnery, where Aziraphale’s expressiveness is much more muted, despite a being in a highly charged situation.

Considering Aziraphale’s rather extreme reaction to paint getting on his jacket not two minutes before, one might expect another slightly whiny protest at this treatment of the coat he has kept for over 180 years. Instead we get an extremely muted response to being shoved up against a wall.  I’ve seen lots of posts talking about how unconcerned Aziraphale is here, obviously showing how much he trusts Crowley, which I agree with. But I think it’s even deeper than that. It’s another one of those moments where what he’s feeling is actually too much, and he’s only able to express the truest part of those emotions.

Love is, after all, more than just an emotion. It is an uncategorizable phenomenon which, similarly, cannot be articulated through expressions alone.

Tl;dr Though Aziraphale is very expressive in his day-to-day emotions, some of the most important scenes for him are the ones in which his expressions are pared-back and subtle, particularly when it related to Crowley.

I am in love w the way pre 2000s films have that hazy feel to them. hd honestly kills the vibe

I think that’s one of the reasons why “period” media that’s marketed off the Aesthetic sometimes bothers me.......like they get the music, the clothing, the cars......and yet it always feels like something is missing

like,

vs

or even compare the early x files to the reboot

something is just lost with the crispness

someone in the tags said early spn vs new supernatural and tbh 100% yes !!

vs

I never realized how much I missed the grainy undersaturated filing ...... “good lighting” and sharpness strike again

Seasons 1-3 were shot on 35mm film

4-15 were all shot on digital cameras, a change that the network insisted on

Yeah the exact thing that changed is that all the old stuff was recorded on film and all the new stuff was recorded on digital media.

i was going to say the film thing and the someone brought up supernatural and i was like "nah" and then @aphony-cree out here dropping that bomb.... in *2005,* to *2008?* there was a show shooting on film???? god you guys MOST shows went though this transition in the 90s how the fuck was SPN on FILM

In the 2000s dramatic shows had a good shot of convincing networks to let them use film. The network still had film cameras they’d bought and maybe hadn’t gotten enough use out of before the switch to digital. Most dramas can’t be shot entirely in the studio, they need to go on location, so it made sense to let them use the older cameras while the new expensive digital cameras stayed in the studio where they were safer

Supernatural wanted the 35mm film aesthetic and hated when they were forced to switch to digital

They just recently released a 4K version of Lord of the Rings and they’re so Crisp. None of those soft fantasy vibes

one of my least favorite things about these 4k updates to films (especially ones that used actual film) is that they also go and try to do color correction. like there’s a REASON that some scenes are heavily blue saturated. that wasn’t purely an effect of using film, but also a choice during the editing process. color is just as important to a movie as anything else.

it’s the exact reason why the matrix was shot with blue heavily filtered out to give that greenish-gray appearance, which added to the feel for a grungey dystopian machine-ruled future. The 4k version of it still has that there for the most part, but you can tell they did some color correction too and it throws off the entire vibe.

not to mention 4k updates of older movies REALLY makes the CGI stand out in a bad way and often times reveals imperfections in makeup that they knew, at the time, wouldn’t be noticed once everything was edited and it hit the big screens.

There's something a theatrical costumer told me about, the 10 foot rule. As long as the costume can pass muster from 10 feet away, it's good enough. Too sharp attention ruins the illusion.

Whats that quote about how the flaws/inadequacies of a medium are what will be missed and replicated as soon as they're obsolete? IE record static (lo fi)

Maybe it's a very unpopular opinion, but you know what? I want Aziraphale to be angry, I want him to indulge in food, I want him to desire things, to be lazy about his celestial work, I want him to be jealous because he thinks he has lost Crowley, I want him to be proud of his accomplishments and I want him to desire to devour Crowley like a ox rib. I want him to experience all the deadly sins at least once and maybe to invent some more and to feel good about it. And I want Crowley to watch him in awe and to love to see him sinning.

It's all set up like that

I love Crowley because he's so aware of what Heaven, Hell, the world are really like, but he gently guides Azi through moral dilemmas and lets him find out harsh truths for himself, supporting along the way, but never forcing his opinions.

I love Crowley because he does little snort laughs and cheesy grins. He bounces around all silly-like, unabashedly himself. He has such an infectious smile.

Because his style is always changing, not because he wants to be with the latest fashion (he's always a bit behind) but because he loves exploring and experimenting with his looks.

Because despite millennia of being told he's evil, he's still a sweetie with a heart of gold.

Because he has a vast imagination and enormous will power. He's creative and adores human inventions, taking precious care of his Bentley for over 90 years.

Because he is so fiercely loyal and protective, not just of Azi, but of humans.

Because he's lived such a long, difficult life and he still finds so much joy in the every day, he's still an optimist.

Because he has endured immense abandonment and suffering, loss of identity, cruelty and fear - and despite it all, he's still kind.

Because he's immensely intelligent and wise and light-hearted and good.

Because even though he wouldn't believe it, he is so worthy of a happy ending.

There is such a special place in my heart for Crowley.

Hope you don't mind @orc-sign-language but I think these tags are very important for people to understand why AAA games and their companies are under a lot of backlash and most games are copy-paste

art made with profit as the sole motivation will always suck ass

The golden age of something is because you are totally free to create anything, to explore a space that still has no rules, and to create art that comes from you truest passions.

For videogames, if you are my age and you think about like 3 videogames that you will forever treasure with you, what titles would you tell me? baldurs gate? Call of Duty? Or something like Spyro, Skyrim, Super Mario, The Secret of Monkey Island?

welcome back to alex's unhinged meta corner, today's topic: the chest touch at the pub. that scene has me in a chokehold for some reason and i still cannot stop thinking about it.

the first thing i wanna talk about is crowley's reaction, since this is the shorter part. he did not expect aziraphale to reach out to him like this and freezes for a second while aziraphale happily chatters away.

they were both walking and the hand on his chest stops him, so he comes to a stop right next to him while he was slightly behind him before that. his gaze also snaps to aziraphale's face, who is very much not looking at him.

they were having a conversation, but the touch essentially shuts crowley up and zira leaves him to get their drinks.

now, my question is why aziraphale does it. sure, it could just be an absent gesture since they're in a crowded place, just that he has never really done so before. i think it was very much planned, like asking crowley to dance and grabbing his hand later on.

a second before he actually reaches out, he also looks back to check whether crowley is where he thinks he is. that is the only time he does that, he was busy looking for a free table and miracles them one when he cannot find one - the look back is deliberate. especially since crowley is practically glued to his side, he has no need for confirmation, he can feel him brushing against him while walking.

the hand motion he does gets me, too. he is busy fidgeting with his hands like normal and has them clasped in front of him. aziraphale lifts them once he gets to "that is precisely the point", yet also already moves it slightly towards crowley, realizes he miscalculated where exactly he/his chest is, looks to check, then looks away again before actually touching him. am i reading too much into it? maybe.

i think it is his version of a little temptation. not only does it make crowley's brain short-circuit for a second, he also gets them their drinks and is now (or so aziraphale hopes) a bit calmer and will take the news aziraphale is about to give him better. the conversation at the cafe did not go entirely as planned, after all.

additionally, something i am not sure if other people have noticed or not is that aziraphale does not just touch crowley, it is a caress. he moves his hand down his chest.

the movement in order:

bar girl unfortunately moves in front of them, but you can clearly see the way his hand takes. to give you a direct comparison of the starting and end point:

a good point of reference is crowley's bolo tie but also the angle of aziraphale's arm while it is still visible.

the best part, in my opinion, is that aziraphale puts his hand right on top of crowley's heart. i think the symbolic importance of that is pretty clear and does not require any more explanation, although it makes me want to throw myself into a river. but that's by the by.

to summarize, aziraphale caresses crowley's heart chest to get him to calm down and not go insane over the news he is about to give him. he is also simply a bastard and knows exactly what he is doing to crowley.

as always, this is me going nuts with analysis, but i'm also curious to hear other people's thoughts on this.

don't tell my therapist about my unhinged meta posts or she will probably be very concerned for my mental wellbeing

I can't help but wonder if this was more of a self-soothing touch for Aziraphale. From the moment they enter the pub, Azi is on edge.

He's wringing his hands and keeps looking around, then glancing back to Crowley, who's having the time of his life in the puBH

He sits down and looks a bit calmer, waits for Crowley to get their drinks. He's fairly content.

When Mr Brown comes and sits with him, he looks frickin ALARMED

And quickly glances back to... Crowley.

He's so uncomfortable on his own here.

First thing Crowley does? The second he has those drinks he frickin beelines straight to his angel. Immediately barges in the on the conversation, all polite-like, and Azi (who had been stuttering an excuse to Mr Brown) lets his take over. Completely occupies himself in very slowly downing that sherry so he doesn't have to talk, looking away or at Crowley.

If you have EVER been out with a friend and one of you is feeling anxious and the other is confident, you will recognise this situation.

That look. Crowley's so teasing but he's also checking Azi is ok.

"See? This is why I don't go to the pub." This is so me whenever someone I know comes up to me in public that it hurts.

Even when Azi's leaving, he checks Crowley is right there behind him.

They bring such comfort to each other and it's so sweet.

What do you mean the first ever Doctor Who serial is now missing from official release bc the writer's son who inherited the rights cancelled them out of a vague revenge plot, either for not paying his dad enough in the 60s, or bc he's mad that they cast a woman and a black man as the Doctor

He also seems to think his dad created Doctor Who and that he owns the TARDIS as a concept now which. Okay

I can't stress enough that Anthony Coburn didn't create Doctor Who. He was assigned to write the first serial and obviously added things to that but he didn't come up with the idea. By TARDIS originator he literally means "he wrote the line where Susan makes up the name 'TARDIS'", which at least makes him the first person since 1963 to remember Susan made up the name TARDIS.

The weirdest part of this is that apparently he hates regeneration as a concept. He wants control over the show his dad didn't create so he can institute his dream of a Doctor Who where the Doctor always looks and dresses the same no matter who's playing him, or alternatively just died with Hartnell

"A person does NOT become another person" It's a show about a two-hearted alien traveling in a infinitely large phone box, and he thinks a character changing their wardrobe at different points in their life is too silly and hard to believe

Whelp, he did it.

Given he almost certainly doesn't have the rights to do this, I'm sure this is just while the rights are in dispute, but. Yikes.

The weird part is, he was offered money. He said the BBC's offer was a "starting point" but, allegedly, it was the maximum they're allowed to offer him under the union contract Anthony Coburn had in the 60s. So what does he want on top of that?

For the BBC to produce his pilot.

"Here's the most money we can offer you." "Fuck you, and produce my rewrite of my dad's pilot you rejected in the 70s."

He's paranoid that the BBC "killed" his father, but it looks like he's paranoid the BBC, the network willing to pay him 20,000 pounds for rights he probably doesn't have, may go after him too, and he has a contingency:

He's going to leave the rights to Vladimir Putin. Who he thinks will sue the BBC and/or start World War III over the streaming rights to the first four episodes of Doctor Who. He also believes Putin will grant him asylum from BBC assassins, in exchange for the cavemen episodes of Doctor Who

What a twat.

Thankfully they've left Britbox alone. I just checked.

If he weren't being a white supremacist asshole, I'd be laughing about the fact that he's still griping about how they RUINED Doctor Who at the end of Patrick Troughton's run when they changed the concept of the Doctor from a wiley old inventor whose time machine could "rejuvenate" him to an alien who regenerated. TIME LORDS ARE NOT CANON! they were added at the end of the seventh season!

On the other hand, this is a warning to anyone insisting on Doctor Who canon, when the show was already contradicting itself during the b&w era: Don't be that guy.

Hm, dude seems to forgot that Doctor Who as a show was mostly credited to the work of a Jewish woman (the original producer, Verity Lambert) and a gay Anglo-Indian bloke (Waris Hussain, who actually directed the first serial), who got the pieces in place to make the show what it would eventually become.

But a segment of the fandom, evidently, don't like folk point that out. Even though the BBC even made a tv movie about the creation of the show where Verity and Waris were two of the main characters alongside David Bradley's William Hartnell (confusing Bradley would also play Hartnell's Doctor in the show itself too).

Avatar
iconuk01

Oh I don't think he "forgot" anything. Verity Lambert and Waris Hussein sound like JUST the sort of people he'd want sidelined.

By the way, Waris Hussein is still alive and he confirmed that Verity Lambert invented the word TARDIS.

You can't outsmart the nerds, conservative brain-dead guy.

I don't want to be sitting here being angry because of Taika's ignorance, I want to be reading fics and making edits and rewatching the kiss from episode 8 over and over again but I can't. In the years past, I've had to swear off jelly belly jelly beans, cracker barrel, shein, harry potter, chik fil a, and home depot. That's just the brands; more importantly to me, I've given up on Jensen Ackles, John Mulaney, Thomas Middleditch, and more than I can possibly think about right now. I have long since learned my lesson in regards to parasocial relationships and hero worship.

Media and art are so extremely important to me as both a coping mechanism and a source of representation and OFMD checks so many boxes for me. It's one of the few unsanitized, non-eunichized queer shows with adult characters, POC, and trans folks and I'm so brutally sad that it's hampered by the actions of one person's lack of social awareness and hypocrisy but I can't in good conscience indulge knowing that when celebrities endorse things like this stupid fucking letter (however well-meaning and done out of ignorance) they normalize this sort of callous thinking.

I'm not sure how to proceed, going forward. I'm pointedly not streaming the show and using my platforms to make other fans aware of these circumstances, as well as sharing information from other indigenous folks who are feeling hurt and betrayed Taika's contribution to all of this. I don't know if it's okay for me to even engage with fan content. I'm not willing to compromise my values by consuming Taika's works without a retraction and it sucks because I am desperate for something to buoy my mental health. Interested to hear how others are coping with this. Anyway, free Palestine.

Beautifully said.

Even if the show has literally helped me in some days, given me joy for WEEKS, and inspired works and whatnot, it still isn't more important than morals and human lives.

Same thing happened with some music artists. Separating your love for someone's art from your life gets so painful, but it's necessary if you value things like human rights.

I can't in good conscience enjoy this incredible show knowing that the producer is, at the very least, a propaganda echo chamber.

I can't enjoy a show about loving freely, being who you are unapologetically, and striving to be free, when the main actor supports the actions of an apartheid state.

The question in my head is: how can someone capable of creating art and moving people's emotions be also so cruel?

Avatar

hey so fuck Taika Waititi. And every cowardly Hollywood jockey that signed that pro-Israel letter instead of using their reach to push for justice. It's just extra disappointing when it's someone who ostensibly cares so much about liberation.

OFMD changes my life genuinely for the better. It opened me up to the possibilities of love. It is a groundbreaking show for the sheer amount of representation it showcases. The characters, storyline and community continue to mean a lot to me. but as usual with fandom, the celebrity cult of personality surrounding any actor isn't healthy anyhow.

so don't get it twisted my friends, don't do the H*rry P*tter crybaby tango. your feelings and love for this show can be real and we can still put that aside to protest one of the shows producers and stars supporting a genocidal state. 🤷

also a little bit unsurprising given Taika's shows problems with anti-Blackness. but dont confuse folk storytelling community with the celebrity who brought the inspiring content to us. any more than you would confuse a whole people with their government.

I'm fucking incensed. And sad.

All of this. All of it, especially the last bits.

Very sad and hurting at the moment. I'm stopping the posting for a while.
