A Talking Blue Feather

WrongPlanet.net, the largest autism forum, is in the midst of a hostile takeover

tl;dr: WrongPlanet’s owner got hacked and there are now no mods. Please signal boost this so that autistic people know the site is likely to be unsafe from now on.

I heard that Alex Plank, the absentee admin of WrongPlanet, had returned with a big announcement.

Hey there, fellow Wrong Planeters! I know it’s been an eternity since I last graced this forum with my presence. I apologize for my absence, but I come bearing an astonishing tale of woe and wonder. Brace yourselves, for I suffer from the most peculiar affliction known to mankind: “Chronic Update Blockage Disorder (and forgetting to change my password).” Yes, you read that right. For a decade now, I have been plagued by a condition that has kept me from updating Wrong Planet, ensuring that it remains untouched, like a relic preserved for future generations to marvel at. Imagine the monumental impact this has had on the state of the internet. Don’t worry; I’ll give you a moment to gather your thoughts. Now, you may be wondering how such an unusual ailment came to be. Well, let me enlighten you. It all began when I was innocently tinkering with some HTML code, trying to add a dancing unicorn GIF to my signature. Little did I know that this innocent act of digital mischief would lead to my tragic downfall. In a bizarre twist of fate, my fingers slipped on the keyboard, causing a cataclysmic error in the space-time continuum. A rift opened up, and Wrong Planet was sucked into a parallel dimension—an alternate reality where updating websites is a crime punishable by being forced to listen to dial-up modem noises on repeat for eternity. It’s a dimension where webmasters are trapped in a perpetual loop of server errors and broken links. Oh, the horror! Ever since that fateful day, I have been caught in a cosmic limbo, unable to break free from the clutches of my disorder. Every time I attempt to update the site, my hands freeze, my eyes glaze over, and my mind is overrun with visions of cascading style sheets and merciless pop-up ads. It’s like a digital possession straight out of a techno-horror movie. But fear not! I refuse to let this affliction define me. In my isolation, I have become a webmaster hermit, a guru of outdated HTML and obsolete plugins. I have attained a level of enlightenment that transcends the mere mortal realm of web development. My website, frozen in time, stands as a testament to my indomitable spirit and steadfast refusal to give in to the relentless march of progress. So, as I sit here in my digital dungeon, surrounded by stacks of floppy disks and a shrine dedicated to the ancient Netscape Navigator, I implore you all to cherish your ability to update your websites. Take a moment to appreciate the mundane task of uploading a new blog post or tweaking your site’s layout, for it is a privilege denied to the unfortunate few, like me. In conclusion, I hope my tale of woe has brought a smile to your face, despite the tragic consequences it has had on my own online presence. Remember, life is unpredictable, and so are the pitfalls of the digital world. Cherish your ability to hit that “Publish” button, for you never know when it might be taken away from you, leaving you stranded in the abyss of chronic update blockage and forgetting to change my password that’s been used for over 10 years. Yours humorously, The Eternally Unresponsive Webmaster Alex i come in peace

Now this is a weird post, right?

Some early commenters mentioned that this was weird - one accused “Alex” of being high - but most of them seemed to think it was just Alex being a bit goofy.

Then on page two, we have a post from The_Walrus, a long-serving moderator. Well, former moderator:

There is a >95% probability that it isn’t the real Alex, and instead his account has been compromised. Firstly, Alex doesn’t write like that. It just isn’t his style. It’s far too poetic. Alex is usually very direct and blunt. It’s also self-deprecating in a way I do not associate with Alex. Additionally:

This is pretty much spelling it out - this individual has gained access to Alex’s account. Alex’s email address has been involved in 30 data breaches, according to https://haveibeenpwned.com/. Having failed to update his site for a long time, the “hacker” (using that word loosely) feels that Alex has forfeited the right to it.
Additionally, all moderators and admins (apart from Alex himself) have been stripped of their permissions.
This is obviously a regular WrongPlanet user, and I can make an educated guess as to who, but almost certainly isn’t the real Alex.

To this, “Alex” responded “educate my balls, Cartman”.

It seems WrongPlanet is probably permanently compromised. It has always been a site that has serious issues with spammers, scammers, and passing trolls, but those issues are only likely to get worse now.

If you are on WrongPlanet mailing lists, be very suspicious of any emails you receive. They are likely to be scams or otherwise misleading.

Please signal boost this post as much as possible… @autie-j @asdcats @chavisory I’d be grateful if you could help get the word out however you feel appropriate.

Update: while the WrongPlanet home page and a few other pages will still load, the forums are inaccessible.

The hacker has created a new admin account, “God”, instead of using Alex’s. They seem to have completely broken the site.

Second update: WrongPlanet is now completely down. Attempting to access it returns a white page with these words:

This Site Has Been Disabled
Contact your service provider for more information.

“God” has even managed to close the site mirror that was continuing to work.

Third update: a WrongPlanet moderator has made a comment on AutismForums, the second biggest autism forum. This isn’t publicly viewable but the key message:

WrongPlanet passwords are stored in unencrypted (unsalted) form, and the nefarious new admin has access to them, along with email addresses. There is no point changing your WrongPlanet password as long as the site is under control - this person will still be able to change it. However, you should change your password as a matter of urgency on any sites where it is the same as your WrongPlanet password, especially if associated with the same email address.

This is a major security issue. If you have a WrongPlanet account, and you reuse your password across other accounts with the same email address, especially bank accounts or email, then you need to change them. Your password is not safe.

"When you are charged with the illegal retention, the illegal possession of the documents, it is not a good idea to say, ‘Hey, you want to know why I took these? Because I could. That is not a defense to that charge. That is an admission to the charge.”

There's that.

Hey Donnie, get ready for prison.

"Today, we received a message from Reddit that our mod team will be replaced if we do not open up the subreddit immediately"

I mean- holy shit? Strikebreaker activity.

This is most certainly not the only subreddit that has gotten this message.

Reddit is not only basically strikebreaking here, they are also making it abundantly clear that they believe they have ownership over everything that their users post and can confiscate it if they think it will make them more money.

I haven't read Reddit's TOS, but I cannot imagine it says they get to keep everything the users post to the website regardless of the user's wishes on the matter, and any other website with user-generated content deciding the users that made said content are not allowed to have a say on if it stays up or not would never stand. Like imagine if a popular youtuber decided to delete their account for whatever reason and YouTube stepped in and said "no, you make us too much money, we're hijacking your account and keeping your content up weither you like it or not" like that's a ridiculous precedent that would outrage people. Tumblr cannot decide my account makes them too much money so I'm not allowed to delete it, nor can TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, or any other platform.

The mod teams were given a blank slate and filled it in, the rules and pinned posts and banners were all made by a person and those people should have a say if it stays up or not. Imo, the mod teams have every right to lock, set as private, or simply delete their subreddits entirely. Baring circumstances where a rouge mod is going against the other mods wishes or a hack or something of that nature, Reddit should not be allowed to stop the mod teams from doing what they want with their subreddits.

Like maybe I'm misunderstanding the full situation but as an artist and writer I am a firm believer in a person having ownership over what they create and being able to do what they want with those things, and the idea that Reddit thinks it can just take what it's users have made and keep it up against their wishes so the website keeps making money is sending up some HUGE red flags. At this point I'm considering deleting my account, bcs I do not want anything I've made on a website where the owners have set a standard of taking it and doing what they want with it without my consent, and I honestly think other users should do the same.

TL;DR: This signals to me that Reddit is no longer a safe place to store your original content and it's best to cut and run now before it gets worse.

Whoever it was I just accidentally reported, I'm sorry!!!

TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)

Thinking about the Voyager episode One, from Season 4 and how it's honestly baffling that Seven of Nine and the EMH managed to keep Voyager running on their own. And to do so while contending with countless technical issues, keeping the crew alive and well while they were in stasis, AND hallucinations. It really hammers in just how much Seven cares about the ship and the crew and how human she's already become.

Star Trek: Voyager Season 4 episode 23: One

The emh has an absolute banger of a line about Seven needing to be acquainted with more personality skills in this episode and I don't remember what it was

This is my favorite episode ever!

please god above can someone explain to me why we're still working on self driving cars when trains exist

Avatar

"we're training them to interpret road signs!" Train goes same place every day. No road signs.

"when forced to choose between old lady and child, which is more ethical for the car to hit?" Fence around train track. Nobody on the road.

"people with disabilities preventing them from driving themselves can be independent" Yes but also. Train.

"reduces the dangers of fatigue with long distance trucking" Train.

"the technology is not yet price effective for the average driver" Train.

Seriously come on choo choo bitches let's goooooooooo

We will never invent a car that's as eco-friendly as increasing our rail infrastructure.

Shenker-Osorio says the left’s enemy isn’t the right, it’s cynicism. The problem isn’t that authoritarians want to erase the division between church and state, or take away our right to control our bodies. The problem is that this minority can get away with these unpopular proposals because the people who disagree with them think nothing can be done to stop them. For Shenker-Osorio, the tonic for this is to switch from the negative framing (“abolish ICE”) to positive ones: “respect all families.” Rather than saying “end the climate emergency,” she wants us to call for “ensuring clean, safe air to breathe and water to drink.” When the right says they want to cut taxes to improve the economy, we counter with, “we’ll raise wages and increase consumption, which is better for the economy.” Shenker-Osorio proposes a three-step method for changing minds. First, identify a shared value (“people who work for living ought to earn a living”). Move on to a problem (“our divisions distract us while rich people pick our pockets and hand the spoils to their corporate cronies”). And then, the solution: “rewrite the rules so that the wealthiest few pay what they owe and all of us have what we need for generations to come.”
The job of a convincer is to persuade the pizza eaters to go for the burger. For this, Shenker-Osorio says we should borrow from the right, whose most visible avatars deliberately set out to alienate their unpersuadable opponents. When far right figures say grotesque, unhinged things about “groomers” or “Jewish space lasers” or whatever, they’re trying to trick their opponents into repeating the statement: “Can you believe these bozos want to give teachers AR-15s?” Getting your opponents to repeat your message increases the chance that it will be heard by someone who finds it persuasive and switches from burgers to pizza. By this logic, the left increases its chances of taking power by saying bold things that trigger conservative Red Scare paranoiacs and religious maniacs. When they run around and say, “The left wants to take away your assault rifles, making housing and college free, and replace your 401(k) with a guaranteed pension,” they do our work for us.

The Merry Melodies cartoon "Greetings, Bait" about a worm vs. a crab dd SUCH an imaginative abstract gag here that really only works with a stalk-eyed character design. It's too bad they never used the crab in anything else.

[ID. Video of a woman recording an opera performance when her cat, fluffy and with bulging eyes, hops into frame. She stops singing and tries to push the cat slightly out of the way, but on her next cue the cat starts meowing before she can sing. The woman starts laughing as the cat continues meowing to the music, as though it was singing as well. End ID.]

More evidence that cats bond with us by mirroring us.

I’ve read accounts here on the Tumblr of a trans man whose cat lowered the pitch of their meow, after he started taking T. So I suspect this woman sings a lot around the house, and her cat is like: “That’s just how we do things in this clowder.”
