In my eyes Grace using her powers to make James and Matthew kiss her, and generally controlling men (Charles being among them but above all James) was always the bigger offence than her interfering with James & Cordelia’s relationship. Like, it’s literally SA by magic (and in Matthew’s case it wasn’t even addressed plus she gaslit him into thinking that he’d done sth wrong and used it to keep him in check), and James was clearly traumatised by the experience. Not saying that Grace deserves eternal punishing for it because it’s def more nuanced than that. But people need to start calling it what it was instead of playing up the romance drama 😭

You know how parabatai experience immense pain when the other dies? We've so far only seen this happen to young, strong, able-bodied Shadowhunters. Assuming that a set of parabatai lives to old age and no longer have the vitality that they did in youth, do they literally die together? Can the physical pain of a parabatai dying literally kill you if you're old and don't have the health necessary to bear it? I'm seriously curious about this.

Thinking about how Christopher’s death was essentially a punishment for Grace since everyone else got their happy paired-up ending (cause for Matthew not being paired up is the happy ending). Like obviously there is so much more to Kit as a character and how his death affected everyone else, but in light of how happy endings usually look in CCs books it’s worth pointing out that the one character who is hated by large parts of the fandom and has committed an offence that would by many be considered to be irredeemable was robbed of it.

Hello, hello, and welcome to my academic dissection of two of my all-time favourite fictional characters. I, your fearless host, will be giving you insight into Matthew and Alastair as literary foils, the ways that their arcs mirror each other, and the ways that they're two sides of the same traumatised little coin.
So, without further ado, let's start with the basics. This post is super long, so it's going under a cut.
This was so exciting to read! Thank you for expressing in so much detail and with so much care what makes these two characters interesting and such suitable foils to each other. You described exactly what makes me love and feel so strongly about them, and I hope that at least some people can gain a new appreciation for them through reading your essay. It honestly deserves to be seen.
Also you just made me want to reread the entire series and pick apart every single line relating to Matthew/Alastair even more than I already have 😅😌
