when i said “are you seeing this” i meant it genuinely and it turns out the answer is a resounding no

we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

I reblogged this like 9 times kinda jokingly, but software should be able to run on older and less powerful hardware, and consume less power on newer hardware. Like, this is a real problem imo

I dislike that this frames PROGRAMMERS as the problem.

Programmers would typically love to optimize their shit! You don’t get into programming if you don’t, on some level, enjoy poking at things and figuring out how to make em work and optimization.

The reason so much shit doesn’t work well isn’t bc of the programmers. It’s bc unreasonable time constraints and expectations, refusing to give people enough resources, and forcing people to meet impossible schedules.

It’s bc you can’t demand x gets released by y date while also refusing to hire enough people to get that work done, and setting stupid ass measurements of success like “number of lines written”, with more being a GOOD THING, bc the people that make these metrics AREN’T PROGRAMMERS and have no idea what they’re talking about!

Don’t put this shit on the programmers, thanks.

even if the artist were a human, there’s so much more to consider about a piece of art than just how it looks at a glance

i mean that’s a long perfectly straight line, was it done free hand? was it done in a single masterful stroke leaving the same thickness of paint the whole way through? are the edges of the line sharp enough to warrant the use of a magnifying glass if you were going to search for errors/rough spots?

and if the artist didn’t paint free hand, or if it were done in multiple strokes with different thicknesses of paint, or with purposefully rough and uneven edges, why?

what about the colour? the position of the line on the canvas? the width of the line? the choice of leaving the rest of such a large canvas blank? there’s so much to consider

and on top of all this sometimes the artist will be a snail

i love when you're so obsessed about The Character that you actually post about them Less than other characters because every time you draft up a post you're like "oh god. they're gonna know. they're all gonna know i'm obsessed with The Character. and that i'm thinking of them 24/7."

i hate to say this but saruman is a very understandable character because he studied the works of evil to better understand them and defeat them, but in the process he became corrupted. and that’s just what law school is like. you either die young or live long enough to imprison your friend in a tower because you’re going crazy studying for the evil bar exam. which is like the regular bar exam.

tumblr you frustrated me enough that i bothered fuckin’ around in the web developer tools section and folks, if you have ublock origin, here’s the list of filters to make tumblr functional:

www.tumblr.com##.B6Xr2 www.tumblr.com##.zytrC._y4kh for the y2k stuff

www.tumblr.com##.TRX6J.CxLjL.qjTo7.IMvK3.q8kZB for the frogs button the rest here all remove things like tumblr live (no more seven day limit!), the suggested stuff that interrupts posts (like the buttons you can click on, etc), and removes the multiple dashboard options at the top so you can have just your dash of people you follow: www.tumblr.com##.KDoiW.rR_oZ www.tumblr.com##.T4ddP www.tumblr.com##.RAEnv www.tumblr.com##.EvhBA.T0bbH www.tumblr.com##.TQmoN www.tumblr.com##.MJvwO.kDCXR www.tumblr.com##.wl0Ka

caveat: i only run tumblr on my desktop and i have xkit going too

here’s the difference on my dash (thanks @evenlarksandkatydids for the cute pic):

tell me y’all don’t want a functional dashboard again

Hot 4am take but I feel like if we want to get people more interested in making their yards a more habitable space for wildlife like insects, we have to acknowledge that ‘Don’t want bugs in your house’ is still a 100% fair and valid point of view. ‘Loves nature’ and ‘doesn’t want roaches spiders and mosquitoes in the house’ aren’t opposites.

And with that in mind, when we propose to people that spraying pesticides around houses is Not A Good Idea, Actually, I feel like we need to give an alternative asides from ‘deal with it.’

I wish there were products commonly sold that actually WERE targeted to specific bugs instead of every bug killing spray being repackaged Kills Everything Juice That Is Dangerous To Your Kids And Pets

that being said, spiders are the best pest control, for real.

I would LOVE a bug spray that keeps the very specific tomato eater little bastards away from my romas and DOESN'T KILL BEES but unfortunately EVERY spray ever will apparently kill EVERY BUG even the good ones without fail and I hate it so much because if you say "But I don't WANT a bug spray that'll kill bees too." Everyone just shrugs like "just don't use bug spray then." AND THERE ARE NO ALTERNATIVES?? It's either bye bye bees, THE SAME GUYS THAT POLLINATE YOUR SHIT, or your entire fucking garden gets eaten by the bugs you don't want in your garden.

Farmer Family Friend's pest control solutions are all basically "promote beneficial critters like spiders, wasps etc."

He uses no-till beds with grass paths between them because it makes habitat for ground beetles. And cover crops.

According to him, even organic pesticides will still kill beneficial and harmful insects alike. They're a last resort.

He rotates planting marigolds in beds because they inhibit a lot of pests.

Also, small snakes! Little snakes like green snakes, ribbon snakes, garter snakes, juvenile corn snakes, juvenile rat snakes, and others all eat insects as part of their diet. No step on snek! Let them be and they will be the best pest control you can ask for!

^^^^

The Meadow began when I found two garter snakes under a shingle that had blown off the roof in a windstorm, and started piling rocks, bricks and logs to make a house for them

They still live there

I have been doing a lot of research on natural pest management for my food forestry project and one of the things that has come up is that many garden pest bugs LOVE nasturtium bushes to the point of leaving other plants alone, so if you set up nasturtium bushes with little screens around them, they will catch many bugs for you to do as you wish with. I intend to feed thwm to my chickens.

Has anyone in this thread used a dawn or dr bronner soap spray? It's really only effective for soft bodied bugs, but it won't harm beneficial bugs with a hard exo like bees, lacewing, ladybugs, etc because it's not a pesticide. Also occasional dusting with diatomaceous earth for stubborn infestation can work, but will take out friendlies like slugs and snails.

Adding dill fennel marigold interplanted with fruiting vege will discourage most pests, and garlic or chili pepper sprays are another good non-fatal deterrent. adding (native!) Predators like ladybugs will keep pests in check, and attracting wasps is easy with a source of water beside the occasional sacrificial fruit or cucumber.

Also a good way to keep roaches out of the house is to use borax or DE around doors and windows, it will kill them via desiccation just like soap & water spray for plants. Use a paste for vertical planes and a 2' layer of dust around doors.

Also, ants hate cinnamon, and it totally messes with their scent trails. Borax is also good for fleas and can be dusted on and around dog living areas without harming kids or pets.

05.25 - The Grand Star Jelly

Image description: [Digital art of a scene set in space. Among many stars in a dark sky, there is one larger star brighter than the others that is set on top of a jellyfish body. The huge jellyfish is pink, purple, and blue, with long tentacles moving throughout the whole painting and extending off into the night. There is a small astronaut floating in a spacesuit right next to the jellyfish star, looking up at it and seeming minuscule in comparison.]
