i would’ve never guessed that a crossdressing anime character in the 90s would’ve actually led to a good joke
“lol Arthur Conan Doyle clearly didn’t know anything about drugs. Sherlock Holmes did cocaine but it calmed him down. That’s not how cocaine works!”
There are two options: Arthur Conan Doyle had never met someone addicted to cocaine or he met some with ADHD who was addicted to cocaine
#you cannot convince me sherlock 'i don't see a use for this common knowledge i shall forget it immediately' holmes wasn't adhd as hell #sherlock 'if i have nothing to do for a day i will literally start shooting the walls out of boredom' holmes #sherlock 'i have built a perfect wax replica of myself - why? iunno' holmes
He specifically took drugs when he didn't have a case to occupy himself, that man was ADHD as fuck
ACD was a practicing doctor and ship's surgeon during the period where cocaine was routinely used as medicine and described by medical journals as "the blessed instrument of Christ," so not only is there exactly zero chance that he'd never met anyone addicted to cocaine, he also almost certainly administered cocaine to people.
It's also definitely not a stretch at all to say he'd probably met people who self-medicated with cocaine to deal with what we'd now call ADHD. Like, the second ever Sherlock Holmes story begins with Watson protesting Holmes' overuse of cocaine, and Holmes replying that he needs it to deal with his overactive brain -- it's entirely plausible that ACD had had that exact conversation with someone or multiple someones.
Like, the man had been a ship's surgeon. On a whaling ship. The number one place in Victorian times to find men who either couldn't get or couldn't hold down work elsewhere. He was almost certainly extremely familiar with a pretty broad spectrum of neurodivergence and self-medication thereof, even if medical science didn't yet have the terminology to apply to it.
Not only did ACD probably have this conversation with someone in real life, he clearly knew and understood how dangerous cocaine was.
At a time when cocaine was regularly administered by other doctors, Doyle wrote Watson to have a clear aversion and dislike of the drug and understood that it was bad for you. It’s written as a clear indication that Sherlock, despite all his brilliance and genius, is still a human being who can make very bad decisions for himself.
Not only that, but Watson does ultimately win and gets Sherlock off of his addition to cocaine in the end. It takes him a while, but Sherlock is weened off the drug and this is seen as a good thing for everyone involved. In fact in a later story Watson comes home and sees a needle and fears that Sherlock might’ve had a relapse (he didn’t, the needle was just being used for something else involving a case).
Doyle knew what he was doing. He wasn’t writing it as an endorsement or as an indication that Sherlock knew better than Watson. It’s made very clear in the books that Sherlock is highly limited in a lot of ways that Watson is not. Watson was a skilled physician and both he and ACD knew cocaine was not good for someone like Holmes.
I see your "Laios is trans" but that dude is THE most apathetically agender person on the planet. Laios does not have time for gender. Laios does not even HAVE a gender identity, he removed it to make room for more Monster Facts.
Found this one that checks all the boxes on r/boomerhumor.
Wow
Weirdest experience I ever had with this is with a customer at work.
It’s not an uncommon occurrence for men in their 40s and 50s to refer to their wives as “old bags”, so whenever I do the whole “Would you like a bag” spiel, there’s a 50/50 chance they will point to their wife and say “No thanks I have one right here” or say “Nah I left her at home” Or something else awful and then wink at me and call me darling or sweetheart and just make me want to be smited by god right in that second.
However there was one customer that came in and did this whole song and dance. Not out of the ordinary. What was, however, was how he then followed it up by going “I’m kidding, I’m divorced ha ha.” Then, his face drops and he turns to his friend with a look of absolute horror and goes “Wait, that’s probably why. Do you think that’s why she left me Andy? Because I said things like that?” And then proceeded to look like he was re-evaluating his whole life as his friend led him out of the store.
TL; DR = Boomers are weird and this one was given a glimpse behind the veil of self awareness in a Tesco Extra
Minotaur is not a species
The Minotaur was named that because he was the son of King Minos. Anyone with a bull head has to be named after their dad, like the Kyletaur or something.
Hello fellow disabled people of tumblr. I know that 2010s-2020s culture has turned against the notion of asking to speak to a manager. I know that “can I speak to a manager” is the mark of the beast.
And yet. If someone at the front desk is telling you they can’t unlock the elevator. If you get a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot when you have the dmv card. If the door to the big stall won’t close and you’re telling the front desk about it for the third time in as many weeks. If the bus driver won’t give you time to put on your breaks and secure your wheelchair
Ask to speak to their supervisor. Mention he ADA. Drop a reference to “my lawyer.” Make a nuisance of yourself. You have to get used to taking up more space, and that doesn’t just mean physical space. You have rights. You deserve access. You don’t have to just take it to be polite.
You’re allowed to ask to speak to the manager.
I work HR and something that I have found very effective in getting corporations to take you seriously is phrases like "my associates" "my counsel" "I've been advised" etc.
Always, always pretend like you have lawyers at the ready. They don't know who you are. They don't know if you have a rich family member. From now on, you always have legal counsel on retainer.
A "Karen" is someone weaponizing white privilege to get things they are not entitled to. You advocating for your rights as a person is not Karening. Be a fucking nuisance. You deserve to exist like anyone else.
Keep seeing that post where OP starts like 'Thinking about...grieving the undead' and then adds on about like. Real life situations where people have not died but have left your life and you would have reason to grieve them.
All respect, that's an important concept, but that is not what I am thinking about when I read 'grieving the undead'.
No need to keep this in the tags, you're completely right about this scenario!
tfw a tumblr post makes you yeet out of bed at approximately 4am to turn on the lights and rummage through your closet in your underwear because you KNOW you have a relevant poem printed out in a folder in the crate on the top shelf!!!!
anyway here’s “Adjusting to the Light” by Miller Williams
a five year old note among my 1588 saved notes that just reads: four-dimensional salmon
OH WAIT I REMEMBER WHAT THAT MEANT
a higher-dimensional creature whose life cycle involves 'swimming upstream' backwards through time from the end of the universe to their spawning site at the birth of the universe
I have found the best ally
Straight and cis people will say that they are allies, but you will NEVER measure up to my dentist.
Me: "Hey, is it ok if I can change my name on my info from [DEADNAME] to Sai?"
Random woman that I wasn't even talking to in the chair next to me: "Honey, if that's the name you had at birth, [DEADNAME] is your only name."
My dentist, very slowly turning her rolley chair towards the woman: "Shush."
Random woman: "Excuse me?"
Destist: *closes privacy curtain while staring bullets at the lady*
Me: *pissing myself laughing*
My dentist while changing my name in my info (reminder that English is not her first language, she immigrated from Russia): "There, Sai, you have pretty boy teeth. Smile and make all girls swoon."
Me not having the heart to tell her I'm not transmasc but I'm Agender, and still pissing myself laughing: "Thank you [DENTIST NAME]."
Rb to have pretty chosen gender teeth. Smile and make all girls swoon.
This is a documented thing! It occurs most often with hearts but can happen with any transplanted organ. It's called 'cellular memory' and I wrote a whole paper on it during my freshman year of uni. It's also why some transplant recipients experience new preferences, thoughts, and sometimes behaviors their donor was known to have. Like favourite foods or drinks, subtle changes in personality (like becoming a bit more daring, etc), and more. It's usually temporary as the organ adjusts to its new person's preferences, experiences, habits, etc. It's fascinating and awesome and I would love to study it in-depth someday.
Which is why I want all of my organs upon death given to the same person. Hostile takeover from within.
I'm just trying to figure out what situation would require multiple organ transplants all at once.
Doctor: well the bad news is that all of your everything is fucked. The good news is that someone with an odd final request just died
reminded me of this
Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria is such a weird theory because it's like there's a very obvious explanation for why middle school kids who didn't have dysphoria before might suddenly have dysphoria. Like huh weird I wonder what very obvious and widely known change that could cause kids to suddenly become very uncomfortable in their gender or sexual identity starts in between the ages of 10 and 14. Guess we'll never know. Must be peer pressure to *checks notes* become the only gender minority in your whole school singling you out for harassment by your peers. Couldn't be puberty suddenly giving you new body parts/bodily functions that are wrong for you.
Turns out Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria is a natural consequence of the often comorbid Rapid Onset Gender
This video is a perfect demonstration of just how badly elderly people need to be introduced to video games. Like it should be a thing in facilities and assisted living, it's like a no brainer, and could enrich these people's live SO MUCH!!!
I’ve watched this like 5 times and the German lady constantly crashing her car cracks me up every time
Keeps the mind active, the spirits up, and the heart connected! Hell yes!!!
English added by me :)
The Goyim are fucking wild, the way I would have dumped that casserole over that woman's head, also divorce that wife.
holy fuck i hate evangelicals so much
The wife is an antisemite and this guy needs to divorce her, holy crap.
I've been seeing posts about stuff like this lately and what I haven't seen enough of is clear statements about:
The point of kashrut is not that something will happen. That's a Christian framing. Christianity posits sin as something that has a direct effect. Judaism doesn't.
Kashrut is centered around the idea of intent. It is a practice. Feeding an uknowing person who holds by kashrut (at whatever level, in whatever way) food that violates their practice does not unleash some kind of wrath of God on them. It is, however, a violation of their trust, and of their practice. It has self-imposed consequences. The entire premise of "I will feed this person a thing they refuse to eat to show them that it's fine" is not only unethical, but it has nothing to do with the cause/effect of that person's choices and perspective religiously or culturally. (It also should be unnecessary to point out that the consequences of violating a dietary restriction are often not immediate, and feeding someone a food they aren't used to eating can cause problems many hours later.)
Judaism approaches the commandments and the mitzvot (or religious obligations) from the perspective of those that are between man and God, and those that are between man and man. Kashrut is between man and God, ie. each individual has to make decisions for themselves and those decisions are between them and God (or not, in the case of atheist Jews), and no one else. There is no place for another person to intercede, and if they do, the consequences will be in the affected person's conscience and emotional soul. (Which also means that from a Jewish perspective, these in-laws were positing themselves as God, which I'm pretty sure is also not something Evangelicals are fine with, let alone Jews.)
When it comes to kashrut, like I said, the framing is centered on intent. For example, kashrut requires leafy greens to be checked for bugs, because bugs are not kosher. If a person does their due diligence to check for bugs and finds none, and ends up eating one that they unintentionally missed, they have not violated kashrut. However, if a person does not check for bugs and eats a leafy green, even if it has no bugs on it they have violated kashrut because they didn't check.
The thing is, an example like the above AITA is not in violation of kashrut, but the person affected nevertheless felt violated themselves, and likely guilty and possibly tainted. And while they don't have to, a lot of people in this situation still do feel this way, and that's natural. Many rabbis will say that to resolve that guilt you can do teshuvah, whether it's through davening or tzeddakah or both. (I think Chabad.org has a page on this specific issue but tbh I don't feel like linking to them for a number of reasons so feel free to do your own research or talk to your friendly neighborhood rabbi.)
So for any Evangelicals who want to feed Jewish (or Muslim) people food that violates their religious practice just to prove a point, maybe just cut out the middleman, don't mess with people's food, and donate to your local homeless shelter instead (but not the Salvation Army).
This is important.
I don’t believe I’m going to hell if I eat pork. I don’t believe G-d will punish me if I eat pork. I don’t need anyone to “prove” to me that it’s okay to eat pork.
(Although I’ll note that if you don’t eat pork for a long time, and then you do, it can have very unpleasant effects on your digestive system, so doing this to someone is harmful in a myriad of ways.)
I’m not afraid to eat pork: I choose not to eat it. I find the idea of eating it distasteful and a violation of my ethics and identity. It’s not about being afraid of divine wrath.
But I fear that’s too nuanced for the average Christian to understand.
Telling the son he can't go to the mother-in-law's house isn't a punishment; it's a reward.
That is clearly a brine shrimp.
This makes so much sense
May I add:
Too many I know, give more than asked and run themselves ragged.
I know you want to be good and kind to others and show your skills. But please don't. It just leads to more work because people think you can handle it, or uses you. If you can perform 100% of what is asked with 70% of your energy, do that and save the 30% for yourself.
