If you suspect your cat has been exposed to an essential oil or is displaying any unusual symptoms, it's important to contact a veterinarian immediately.

Cleansing for Beginners•

•Release negativity • Purify • Neutralize energy•

Common items that require cleansing: Tarot Cards, Pendulums, Crystals & Stones, Spaces, Altars.

Before using any cleansing method, be sure to check if it’s safe. Some crystals or objects are sensitive to water, heat and light. Always burn responsibly.

Importance of Intent

Use affirmations to make your intent clear. Be sure to clear your mind and relax, you can clearly think of your intent and let it embody you. You can also speak the intent out loud or repeatedly think of it in your mind. Be sure to focus your intent on what needs cleansing. Also remember to keep your affirmations in the present tense.

Examples of affirmations

“This space is cleansed of all negative energies and influences.”
“The moonlight cleanses these stones.”
“These cards are purified.”

Using the Elements for Cleansing

Water: submerge, sprinkle, rinse.

Fully submerge some items in a cup of water.

Sprinkle water over a space or object.

Rinse what you wish to cleanse.

Air: incense, wind, smoke, oil diffusers.

Burning incense & diffusing essential oils can cleanse spaces and objects. Hold objects in the incense smoke for best results. Common scents for cleansing include lavender, peppermint, lemon, sage and rosemary scents.

Wind can cleanse items using weather conditions or fans. Hold items in the wind or allow wind to blow through a space.

Smoke of any kind can be used to cleanse but the easiest route is using incense smoke.

Fire: flame, candle, heat, burn.

You can use candles in different ways. Hold an object over a candle and the heat and smoke will work together to cleanse. You can also use scented candles to cleanse areas. White candles are associated with purity.

Heat can be used with candles, flames or any other method. Hot springs are considered to have cleansing properties.

Burning or holding an item in a flame is considered to be cleansing as well.

Earth: plants, dirt, mud, salt.

Different plants and herbs can be used for cleansing. Before using plants and herbs, be aware of any medical conditions, pregnancy, pets or children and be sure the plants you are using are safe. Common plants and herbs for cleansing include sage, rosemary, juniper, white pine and thyme.

Fully submerge objects in dirt or sprinkle with dirt to encourage cleansing.

Cover objects in the mud. You can place a dish with mud in a room and ask the earth to cleanse the area.

Burying an item is known to cleanse it.

Salt can be used in many different ways for cleansing. Most commonly it is sprinkled.

Crystals and Stones for Cleansing

Certain crystals have cleansing and purifying properties. This list is only a few.

Be sure to cleanse these crystals often. They may crack or break from absorbing too much energy. The exception would be self-cleansing stones.

Selenite

The best stone for beginners, it is very sensitive to water. This stone is self-cleansing and also cleanses the air and other objects around it. Keep it stored with other crystals, tarot cards, on an altar or on your person.

Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz is very versatile in its uses. One of its properties is cleansing but it also requires to be cleansed itself. It can be placed in a room, on your person or on an object to cleanse.

Citrine

Citrine can be used to cleanse other objects, it also requires to be cleansed itself. Can be stored with other crystals, tarot cards and objects to keep them cleansed.

Carnelian

Carnelian has cleansing properties. It can be used to cleanse others and yourself as well as other objects.

Using Light for Cleansing

•Moonlight

Leave items in indirect or direct moonlight for cleansing. You can also allow moonlight to shine directly into a specific space.

•Sunlight

Alternatively, you can also leave items in indirect or direct sunlight or allow sunlight to enter a specific space. Be careful leaving certain crystals or stones in sunlight.

Best Times and Moon Cycles for Cleansing

Days of the week

Saturday’s & Sunday’s are the best days for cleansing. Saturday’s are ruled by the elements and are a day of relaxing and letting down. The best day for cleansing and protection. Sundays are the day to get ready for the week, prepare and cleanse spaces and items.

Days of the year

Spring Equinox

A great time for manifestation and cleansing. Balance is heightened and there is a sense of renewal.

May Day

A great day to cleanse, especially with fire. Purification is a theme of the day.

Autumnal Equinox

A day all about releasing and starting new. Cleansing energies are high as a cycle is coming to an end.

Moon Phases

New Moon

Associated with new beginnings and release. This is a great time for Cleansing, Manifestation and Planning.

•Full Moon

Associated with reset and letting go. This is a great time for Cleansing. Energies are very high and the moonlight can easily illuminate spaces and objects at this time.

Best Full Moons for Cleansing: December, October, March, April.

TL;DR: Use affirmations to affirm your intent while cleansing. Elements, sunlight, moonlight and certain stones/plants can be used to cleanse objects, spaces or people. Most effective on Saturdays, Sundays or during the new moon/full moon.

Why you should lock your mirrors and how to do it

Taken from my BOS, inspired by a viral tiktok, adapted to my own practice

In Mesoamerican culture, mirrors were seen as portals. Some say that these portals are from one dimension to another, and others say it is a portal to the realm of the dead. This is why many witches suggest covering your mirrors at night or if they are facing your bed. However, some may want to have the full convenience of not covering their mirrors at all, during any time of day. This is where locking mirrors comes in. Not only is it convenient, but it adds another layer of protection to your home. Wards mean nothing if you have an open portal to the dead in your bathroom.

How to lock a mirror:

  1. Gather full moon water, florida water, or another protective liquid that won’t leave a stain on the mirror.
  2. Wash (physically clean) and cleanse (spiritually clean) your hands. You can do this by running them under water or passing them through incense smoke.
  3. Dip your fingers into the moon water, or whatever liquid you are using, and draw a pentacle or protective sigil on the mirror. Imagine the mirror closing (you can visualize this as a light behind the mirror fading, or metal bars locking in front of the mirror--whatever your mind’s eye sees the portal as).
  4. Let the water on the mirror air-dry on its own.
Beginning a new craft;

THE BASICS:

a sideshow magician with all the drappings and distractions is likely to be called an act. True power can conjure from all that is present but not observed.

  • Visualization
  • The Four Elements; fire, earth, water, air
  • Spirit, soul

Being bipolar with major depressive disorder, my craft is grounded in the basics of daily life. Without a dime we have all the time to focus on the power of the mind. The most important tool. You can spend to your hearts content but your craft will take time to cultivate. Just like it takes time to cultivate (find) yourself.

Visualization

If you feel "silly" imagining yourself having a great day, or washing yourself in a cleansing sunshine, you're not gonna be able to manifest shit. Magick is creation and you cannot create without visualization. It will be referenced in every spiritual/magical pursuit

The Four Elements

🔥FIRE 🔥 - Anytime you can get beneath the sun you can charge yourself. Visualize a white orb in your solar plexus. Grow it like a fire underneath the sun, expanding to your chest, abdomen, legs and head until it covers your being. Carry this fire with you.

Every meal is fuel for your inner fire. Chew with intention. Personally I see too many people disregarding the vitality of food. Leaving too many distractions about and shoveling food into unnoticed taste buds. Each slowly. Finish a whole bite before beginning the next. Fuel your fire.

Candle magic (safely) - see color magic for correspondences

🌎EARTH 🌎 - Personally, my body is my earth. Sacred. To protect my body I must also protect the earth. Fucking recycle and pick up trash when you go to beach. We have all had to compromise with plastic in our lives for financial and practical reasons so I'm not here to cry plastic witch. Do what you can, and we all know we can do more. Wanna connect with the Earth? Get to it!

Ground yourself. Stand barefoot on solid ground and feel the Earth. Plant yourself. Visualize the roots of every being connect beneath the surface, feel your connection, ground yourself in the gravity of your world.

🌊WATER 🌊 - every bathing is a ritual. Why do you shower if not to clean yourself? Let the water wash over you, everything unserving washes away. Visualize the weight of the mess leave your head, run down your hair and out the drain.

Drink with intention! Being former food service and retail sometimes my first drink would be soda or alcohol and not till after midnight. My craft first began when I started to see water as the element of my being. Water washes everything clean, it moves life forward, use it as such.

🌬AIR🌬 every second of every day. Air is life. Without air earth and fire suffocate. With air water transforms beyond other elements abilities. With meditation, practiced organized breathing and emergency response breathing (how to trigger the parasympathetic system) you can practice the strength of your breathing and it's ability to unburden a worried body.

With each breath feel the strength of your lungs expand. The blood of your heart pump to your extremities, your brain inhales all the senses as oxygen fills your being. Visualize the air flowing in and out of you. Strength in, weight out.

Soul, Spirit

I define my soul as "my being", to mean my current existence. I have my body which manifests my physical world, my mind which comprehends and analyzes my world, and then my "being", me, my soul.

To find your soul and work with it I feel you need to first find the magic around you. The elements are always with you and your relationship with them must be as intertwined as the soul is.

Personally my daily rituals drive my day, being and frankly, are essential to managing my health conditions. With the weight of depression and home circumstances I never developed basic self care regimes. As I got older I didn't care enough about my existence to maintain any. That's when I realized the magic of my mind. My mind is what manifests my world and drives my body. Left unchecked my mind has destroyed my body and left my soul to hide. I integrated magic into my morning "rising ritual" that I find helpful to staying in tune with your magic, first developing your craft or without actual "tools"

DAILY: no cost witchcraft

Rise with the sun (I can't have the shades drawn I will sleep for actual days and never move)

Before leaving your bed, stretch your toes out, feel your muscle roll down your leg. Stretch your arms, follow your body like a hillside rising. Your body is your earth, the world of your being. Fuel yourself in the sun

Visualize your day. Picture yourself returning to this spot, the window is dark and room is softly lit, what fulfilled your day. Do not ruminate on your upcoming day. This is a time of potential not doubt

Bathe. Cleanse yourself, prepare your body for your day.

Coordinate clothing with color Magick and daily intentions. Basic protection is intention so USE WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY.

Meditate. Finding the soul is quieting the mind. Start slow. Don't think " I can't meditate for an hour so I can't do it". You have to start small and it's always hard. We are busy beings, the world is crowded. Reaching mindfulness is a skill to be practiced not inherent.

The elements are with you. If you want to become a master of your mind and manifest your life you will use the basic elements and what's around to create your magic. If you wanna become powerful with nothing, start by using what you already have.

Happiness Spell 🍊

Marmalade and magick in a jar that will last throughout winter.

You'll need:

1.25 kg (Seville) oranges

1.2 kg (normal) sugar

1 lemon

1 l water

jars (the number depends on the size of your jars and how much water evaporates but you probably won't need more than 6 "normal"-sized jars)

(paper and pen)

***

Before you begin making the marmalade, take a moment to reflect on your intentions (write them down if that is helpful to you).

First, think about some negative aspect that you'd like to avoid. Is it a particular event your not looking forward to? A recent feeling or development? Or something more vague and general, like i.e., the gloominess that often comes with grey winter weather? Why do you perceive it as negative? What is it exactly that is negative/ unpleasant about it?

Then, focus on something positive? Is there any part of the negativity that can be turned into something good? What would that look like? What form would it take? Otherwise, what would be a positive alternative? What is missing to make things go well? What is important for your happiness? What do you wish to bring into your life/ a particular situation?

Now that your intentions are clear, you can get going...

1. Peel the oranges and lemon and remove the white pith from it. Cut the peels into thin strips - set them aside. Remove the pith from the fruit as well. Over a bowl -to catch the juice - remove the membrane and seeds and set them aside (you'll need them for their pectin). Now you should have three bowls: One with the zest, one with the juice and fruit flesh, and one with the seeds and membrane.

2. Add the zest and enough water to a pot and boil it two or three times (for a few minutes), changing the water every time. As the boiling water is taking away the bitterness of the zest, bring back to your mind whatever bad thing you thought about earlier. Visualise it being in the pot with the zest, being soaked up by the water. And as you pour out the water, all the negativity leaves with it.

3. Add zest, fruit flesh, juice and sugar to a pot and cover them with water. As you wait for the mixture to start boiling, focus on the positivity you set as your intention. Stir sunwise and visualise the good things and happiness you seek to manifest. You may speak them out loud; naming on aspect and thereby "adding" it to the marmalade, then picturing it in your mind while stirring, and moving on to the next aspect.

4. Put the membrane and seeds in a cheese cloth (or something similar) and tie the ends together to make a bag. Once the ingredients in your pot begin to boil, add your pectin bag to the mix.

5. After fifteen minutes you can start testing whether your marmalade is setting (although it will probably take quite some more time). To do so, take a plate (best put it in the fridge before starting to make the marmalade) and drop some marmalade on it. If, after a moment, you can draw a line through the marmalade without it closing again, it is setting.

6. Let the marmalade cool down for five to ten minutes. Then, pour or spoon it into clean (and sterilised) jars. Put on the lids and let it cool down completely.

(If you store the marmalade in your fridge, it is enough if the jars are properly cleaned. If you plan on storing it outside the fridge, I recommend sterilising the jars by leaving them in boiling waters for a few minutes and then letting them air dry on a dish towel.)

Every time you use your marmalade, take a moment to be mindful and to remind yourself of the intentions you put into those jars of happiness.

☾ Rose Salt ☽

One of my personal favorite things to make, Rose Salt has a variety of uses. Whether you use it as a scrub in the shower to cleanse yourself and your energies, as a relaxing soak in a warm bath to relax in, or sprinkle it in doorways and on windowsills as a form of protection, it’s multipurpose and very easy to make! What You’ll Need: - Dried Roses - Salt - A Vessel With a Lid to Keep It In - A Mortar & Pestle Optional: - Rose Essential Oil Steps:

  1. Take the petals and buds of your Roses, save the stems and thorns for other spells, and grind them finely with your Mortar & Pestle.
  2. Add Salt.
  3. Mix both well until they are combined well.
  4. Add the mixture into the vessel you chose.
  5. Add the essential oil, seal the vessel, and gently shake to combine everything together more easily.

One of the many properties of Roses is Protection as is with Salt so combining the two gives you a simple, fragrant protective material to keep around your home.

Adult Cheat Sheet:

Once you’ve looked over all those cool links, I have some general advice for you on how you can have some sort of support system going for you:

Reasons to move out of home

You may decide to leave home for many different reasons, including:

  • wishing to live independently
  • location difficulties – for example, the need to move closer to university
  • conflict with your parents
  • being asked to leave by your parents.

Issues to consider when moving out of home

It’s common to be a little unsure when you make a decision like leaving home. You may choose to move, but find that you face problems you didn’t anticipate, such as:

  • Unreadiness – you may find you are not quite ready to handle all the responsibilities.
  • Money worries – bills including rent, utilities like gas and electricity and the cost of groceries may catch you by surprise, especially if you are used to your parents providing for everything. Debt may become an issue.
  • Flatmate problems – issues such as paying bills on time, sharing housework equally, friends who never pay board, but stay anyway, and lifestyle incompatibilities (such as a non-drug-user flatting with a drug user) may result in hostilities and arguments.

Your parents may be worried

Think about how your parents may be feeling and talk with them if they are worried about you. Most parents want their children to be happy and independent, but they might be concerned about a lot of different things. For example:

  • They may worry that you are not ready.
  • They may be sad because they will miss you.
  • They may think you shouldn’t leave home until you are married or have bought a house.
  • They may be concerned about the people you have chosen to live with.

Reassure your parents that you will keep in touch and visit regularly. Try to leave on a positive note. Hopefully, they are happy about your plans and support your decision.

Tips for a successful move

Tips include:

  • Don’t make a rash decision – consider the situation carefully. Are you ready to live independently? Do you make enough money to support yourself? Are you moving out for the right reasons?
  • Draw up a realistic budget – don’t forget to include ‘hidden’ expenses such as the property’s security deposit or bond (usually four weeks’ rent), connection fees for utilities, and home and contents insurance.
  • Communicate – avoid misunderstandings, hostilities and arguments by talking openly and respectfully about your concerns with flatmates and parents. Make sure you’re open to their point of view too – getting along is a two-way street.
  • Keep in touch – talk to your parents about regular home visits: for example, having Sunday night dinner together every week.
  • Work out acceptable behaviour – if your parents don’t like your flatmate(s), find out why. It is usually the behaviour rather than the person that causes offence (for example, swearing or smoking). Out of respect for your parents, ask your flatmate(s) to be on their best behaviour when your parents visit and do the same for them.
  • Ask for help – if things are becoming difficult, don’t be too proud to ask your parents for help. They have a lot of life experience.

If your family home does not provide support

Not everyone who leaves home can return home or ask their parents for help in times of trouble. If you have been thrown out of home or left home to escape abuse or conflict, you may be too young or unprepared to cope.

If you are a fostered child, you will have to leave the state-care system when you turn 18, but you may not be ready to make the sudden transition to independence.

If you need support, help is available from a range of community and government organisations. Assistance includes emergency accommodation and food vouchers. If you can’t call your parents or foster parents, call one of the associations below for information, advice and assistance.

Where to get help

  • Centrelink Crisis or Special Help Tel. 13 28 50
  • Tenants Union of Victoria Tel. (03) 9416 2577

Things to remember

  • Try to solve any problems before you leave home. Don’t leave because of a fight or other family difficulty if you can possibly avoid it.
  • Draw up a realistic budget that includes ‘hidden’ expenses, such as bond, connection fees for utilities, and home and contents insurance.
  • Remember that you can get help from a range of community and government organizations.

A Practical Guide to Herbology Lesson Four: Tinctures

Introduction

As our journey through herbology continues, I’d like to introduce you all to something that I depend on quite frequently to cure my general aches, pains and insomnia day-to-day: tinctures!

Tinctures are a concentrated liquid form of an herb that can last for several years and be taken as needed. Some tinctures can be taken internally, but some are for external use only. In general, they can help alleviate pain and common symptoms, from anxiety to muscle soreness, but they are by no means a substitute for a proper doctor or medical care. However, they can help make our day-to-day lives more manageable in between visits and check-ups.

All tinctures use alcohol (usually something neutral, like vodka) as the solvent, although there are some cultural and folklore-based exceptions to the rule. In short, they can be taken directly with a dropper or diluted in tea. They can also be crafted using a variety of fresh or dried flowers, leaves, barks and berries.

Making a tincture

There are several ways to go about making a tincture, but I’m going to focus on the one that I grew up with in my tribe: the folk method. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fresh or dry herbs
  • Sterilized glass jars
  • A knife or chopping tool
  • Funnel
  • Cheesecloth
  • Alcohol (something neutral, like vodka or everclear)
  • Tinted glass dropper bottles (cobalt or amber works well)

How much plant material do I need?

Fresh leaves and flowers

  • Finely chop or grind clean plants
  • Fill the jar ⅔ to ¾
  • Pour alcohol to the very top of the jar, covering the plant material completely

Dried leaves and flowers

  • Use finely cut plants
  • Fill the jar ½ to ¾
  • Pour alcohol to the very top of the jar, covering the plant material completely

Fresh roots, barks and berries

  • Finely chop or grind clean plants
  • Fill the jar ⅓ to ½
  • Pour alcohol to the very top of the jar, covering the plant material completely

Dried roots, barks and berries

  • Use finely cut plant material
  • Fill the jar ¼ to ⅓
  • Pour alcohol to the very top of the jar, covering the plant material completely

Which alcohol percentage do I use?

40% to 50% (80 to 90 proof vodka)

  • This is the standard percentage range for tinctures
  • Good for most dried and fresh plant material
  • Extracts water-soluble properties well

67.5% to 70% (half 80-proof vodka mixed with half 190 proof grain alcohol)

  • Extracts the most volatile aromatic properties
  • Good for fresh high-moisture herbs like lemon balm, berries, and aromatic roots
  • Will draw out more of the plant juices

85% to 95% (190 proof grain alcohol)

  • Good for dissolving gums and resins, but not necessary for most plant material
  • Extracts aromatics and essential oils
  • Can produce a tincture that is hard to take (high alcohol content) and can potentially dehydrate the plant material

How long do I soak it for?

Store your tincture in a cool, dark and dry cabinet. Shake it several times a week and check your alcohol levels - you may need to top it up if it has evaporated and exposed the plant material. Exposed plant material can breed mold and bacteria into your tincture so do be sure to take care of it. Allow the tincture to soak for 6 to 8 weeks.

How do I bottle it?

It’s important to note here that your tinted glass bottles need to be sterilized, otherwise they may introduce bacteria and/or encourage mold to grow. One way of sterilizing glass is to wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Then, after rinsing and draining the bottle, place it on an oven rack at 120 Celsius for 10 to 15 minutes to dry.

Once it has finished soaking, it’s time to strain your tincture. Drape a damp cheesecloth over a funnel and have it pour into a tinted glass bottle. Pour the mixture over the cheesecloth slowly, allowing the tincture to drip into the bottle. Afterwards, squeeze the remaining liquid out of the herbs (or blend them and squeeze that) into the bottle.

After you strain and bottle your tincture, you’ll want to label it. This is how I label my tinctures:

  • Common name:
  • Latin name:
  • Parts used:
  • Fresh/dried
  • Alcohol %
  • Source
  • Date
  • Dosage
  • How do I use it?

The standard adult dose for a tincture is ½ to 1 teaspoon up to 3 times daily, as needed. Children usually take ¼ to ⅓ of that dose. For children, pregnant women, or those not wanting to consume alcohol, you can pour the tincture into a hot tea or cook it into water on the stove to help it evaporate.

Warnings:  All plant material should be sourced appropriately and responsibly for your own safety and well-being. Be certain that you are purchasing food-grade ingredients from a reliable retailer or supplier. Along these lines, not all dried herbs are meant for consumption so please be on the lookout for “external use only” labels - you do not want those products for this.

Do not source plant material from the wild without the help of an expert in the appropriate field - you do not know what types of chemicals, pesticides or pollutants that wild plants may have been exposed to. Similarly, there are a plethora of wild plants that look identical to each other: one may be safe while another may be poisonous or fatal.

Do your own research regarding medicinal plants and usage, especially if you are sensitive or have allergies of any kind. If you are on medication(s), consult a doctor before use.

Finally, tinctures are a health supplement and not a substitution for professional medical and psychiatric aid. If you are experiencing any prolonged health and/or mental health issues, SEE A DOCTOR.

Excellent, informative post!

That would look great on a fae garden/house!!

Herbs you can grow indoors.

Made this list for my fellow witchies who like their kitchen to be full of the green stuff :

  1. Basil : like lots of sun and warmth. More difficult to grow in the winter months
  2. Bay : needs plenty of sun and fresh air.
  3. Chives : needs at least 6 hours of sun and plenty of water.
  4. Dill : prefers slightly acidic soil, needs plenty of sunlight, doesn’t need too much water.
  5. Lemongrass : My personal favorite as you don’t plant it in soil. Grow in a couple of inches of water. Easiest to grow.
  6. Mint : needs plenty of water and needs to be placed in an area with indirect light. Harvest frequently.
  7. Oregano : does not deal well with cold and drastic temperature changes could kill it.
  8. Parsley : Doesn’t require too much light or maintenance, but is a slow grower.
  9. Rosemary : needs 6 - 8 hours of strong, direct sunlight. Only water when the top layer of soil feels dry. Needs good ventilation. A bit trickier to grow.
  10. Sage : Needs plenty of sun.
  11. Thyme : Needs 6 - 8 hours of sunlight a day and maybe even supplemental light.
great ideas for a witch‘s
in-home garden ✨🌿🌸
