“Love, Simon” liberal therapist mom scene
Simon [*Standing in the kitchen*]: Did you know?
Emily [*Sitting on the couch in the den nearby*]: I knew you had a secret… But when you were little you were so carefree… But these last few years, more and more, it’s almost like I can feel you holding your breath… I wanted to ask you about it, but I didn’t want to pry. Maybe I made a mistake…
Simon [*Walks over and sits down in a chair across from Emily*]: No. No mom, you didn’t make a mistake.
Emily: Being gay is your thing. There are parts of it that you have to go through alone. I hate that… As soon as you came out you said, “Mom, I’m still me.” I need you to hear this: You are still you, Simon. You are the same son who I love to tease, and who your father depends on for just about everything. And you’re the same brother who always compliments his sister on her food, even when it sucks… You get to exhale now, Simon. You get to be more you than you have been in…in a very long time. You deserve everything you want.
[*Simon gets emotional*]
[*Emily gets up from the couch, comforts Simon, and kisses him on the forehead*]

Let’s all take a moment to appreciate this scene!!

This scene is everything I ever needed from this movie. This message is what LGBTQ+ people need to hear when we are coming out. This is how every parent needs to respond to their children when they come out to them. This is how every parent should respond to every child:
- “I love you, no matter what.”
- “You deserve everything you want in order to be happy.”
And unfortunately, all too often for far too many of us, this message is exactly what gets left out for LGBTQ+ people. This is the message that we do not get to hear enough!
And that is why Love, Simon is such an important movie for so many of us to finally see in movie theaters. This movie provides us with that message that we all so deeply long for, but which many of us never truly received from those whom we needed to hear it from the most. For us, this movie is therapy.
