It’s Throwback Thursday – the day when I lift up older fic, usually (but not always) from the Good Omens show fandom.

There’s been beaucoup debate about tv!Good Omens as queer representation, which I am absolutely not going to get into, but one thing was immediately apparent: Michael Sheen took the book’s characterization of Aziraphale as, though technically sexless, appearing “gayer than a tree full of monkeys high on nitrous oxide,” and leaned so far into it that it’s a wonder he ever came out.

Aziraphale had already appeared in fic as a sort of Queer Guardian, a role in which I first encountered him in two widely read pre-series stories by bibliocratic.  it’s the light (it’s the obstacle that casts it) is set during the days when being “queer in public” could still get you locked up in the UK. Angel and demon are sharing a drink when there’s a midnight knock on the door of A. Z. Fell’s; Aziraphale’s not only known as someone who’ll hide gay fugitives from the coppers, but converses fluently with their visitors in Polari. I love language, but had no idea about the history of this street dialect –  a mashup of Romani and various streams of slang common especially to performing occupations and adopted by gay men (several links in the notes). Muted pining.

“Dot? It’s me… We’re at Zira’s. You know her, the old queen with the bookshop… Nanti, we’re safe as houses. She’s a real dorcas, totally kosher. Bailed old Pauline out months back… Yeah, that’s her. We’re gonna stay the night, in case the sharpies catch on and come back….”

In such surpassing brightness, Crowley discovers that Aziraphale has been, through the ages, iconized as a patron saint to queer people… and depicted as suffering forbidden love for a demon. The spoofs of scholarship and culture criticism made this old literature major snicker even as the pining ramped up to 11. Sweetly understated love confession.

The series Demon And Angel Professors by the prolific Ghostinthehouse began posting shortly after the show aired and completed two years later with the 200th installment. Confession: I’ve barely scratched this colossal opus – an “AU, or is it?” succession of 666-word ficlets (”They’re professors. They’re married. Their students don’t realise. Cue shenanigans”). But in the short arc that I first stumbled on, the professors cross paths with a student who’s been roughed up for their gender nonconformity and swing into action to get them out of the abusive living situation (Professor Crowley: “He’s the better guardian of us, I’m just the getaway driver.“) I Fell and I’ll Wait occur about a third of the way through the series.

And, to close, here’s the sweet little YA-ish series Mr. Fell’s Bookshop Ficlets, written in the first year of the TV fandom by my very, very first follow on AO3, Dannye Chase (HolyCatsandRabbits). Queer and questioning young people find that Mr. Fell’s shop is a place where they’re comfortable being themselves, and his husband is spooky and grumpy, but kind. Part 4 contains one of the sweetest marriage proposals ever written for them.

my good omens hyperfixation has returned after like three years, and, oh boy, has it hit me HARD. every waking thought of mine has been of them. i feel so normally about them and this show 🙃

look we all know that aziraphale is mr. fiddlesticks-not-fuck and dearie-me-good-gracious, but my favorite thing about him is that there is also, at all times, a fuck-shit little bastard inside of him just begging to be let loose. he's petty, he's passive aggressive, and the Second he decides that playing by heaven's rules isn't going to help anybody, it's all "i know who you are, you idiot!" and "you STUPID man" and "FUCK"

The trial would research the hypothesis from the April 2023 paper in the journal Frontiers in Immunology: Hypothesis: inflammatory acid-base disruption underpins Long Covid.

This research would have implications for ME/CFS as well.
