I have a rather. Polarizing personality IRL. Which means that if I’m not making a new acquaintance laugh, they are almost certainly very weirded out and annoyed by me, and will come to disdain me if I don’t figure out how to woo them. Which is why I buy a lot of coffees for people.
One of my new coworkers is extremely shy and professional and wouldn’t have a full conversation with anyone. I kept inviting her along on errands and then when she said she didn’t need to stop for coffee I would pretend that a supernatural force had taken control of my body and of the vehicle and was piloting it into the Starbucks drive thru.
“This is so scary,” I said. “I think I’m possessed by some kind of coffee demon. I think the only way to exorcise it is to… let me buy you a treat!”

look, most people have "professional", "family & rl friends" and "meme friends on the internet", and never the twain shall meet, because you don't want to have to apologize for your racist uncle everywhere and you don't want to explain the memes you share either to work or grandma.
As a mathematician, as a writer, and as a caterer & cook, I have separate professional identities. but then I also have a casual mathematician identity where I ask questions I would feel embarrassed to ask on my professional side. I also have a meme mathematician identity.
I also have multiple writing identities because I don't want to associate my erotica with my fanfic, and neither of those with my professional writing.
But then within fanfic, I have separate identities for my r3k stuff, my video game stuff, my monsterfucker stuff, and my commissioned works, as well as several abandoned identities.
I then also have separate emails for each club I used to run, (boardgames, RPGs, larp, other larp, series of one-off larps, anime, and some university faculty clubs).
I have a different identity for every social media platform that I use . . . which admittedably isn't much.
I have a few identities just for Usenet, although these days that's more like "for contacts from Usenet".
and then I also do a lot of illegal stuff. so my video game cracking has several identities to itself. my cryptoanalysis stuff has several identities. my other things I won't talk about have several identities.
you can see how it adds up, especially over time!
this didn't used to be unusual back in the days of forums, see? everyone had a separate identity for each forum they went to, sometimes several for one forum, because we actually prize our anonymity and ability to craft our images for ourselves, and leave behind any embarrassing childhood moments or other such. but admittedly, there was only a brief window where it was fashionable to do so and also email addresses were easy to have many of.
I'm also not counting all of my single-purpose (not single time use, but used over time for only one thing), emails, like for mmorpgs, or for signing up for services that I know will sell my email.

So I was trawling my local charity bookshop and came across a couple of things and another on eBay.
I said to the woman in the 2nd hand bookshop “oh it’s dedicated to Neil Gaiman”, she responds
“yes unfortunately some people do that, I personally think it is a dreadful thing to do to write in a book like that”
me: “do you know who Neil Gaiman is?”
Her: “ probably someone the author was friends with or a family member, it’s not really my kind of book, I don’t really like jazz music”
