TALES FROM THE PIZZAPLEX SPOILERS AHEAD:
So here’s basically what the Bobbiedots book had to say about Sun and Moon’s origins:
Abe shrugged, he gestured at the colorful play area around them. “Does any of this make sense?”
Frequently filled with screaming kids, the daycare was filled with tunnels, bridges, tubes, ball pits and so many other sorts of contraptions that the kids could explore.
That wasn’t what he thought was strange though.
What Abe thought was strange was that the entire daycare was overseen by an animatronic attendant with a dual personality.
It was (sort of) a not kid-friendly Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde.
In its happy incarnation, the daycare attendant was the Sun.
Sun had a somewhat deformed grinning face surrounded by retractable triangles that clearly mimicked the “rays” of the sun.
He wore massive orange and yellow-striped pants and was clown like in his appearance and demeanor.
The daycare attendant had a dark side.
A dark side called the Moon.
If the lights went out in the daycare, the Sun would morph into a leering moon faced clown, wearing dark blue billowy pants dotted with yellow stars.
The Moon would stalk the children around the daycare admonishing the children: “You’ve been very naughty.”
“Shortly after the daycare was created, the designers realized a flaw. The lights kept shorting out. It wasn’t dangerous or anything- not a fire hazard. Just a darkness issue. The cheapest solution was to install backup generators.
By then, all installations were in place, and the climbing structures were the only place to conceal the generators.”
“That doesn’t sound very safe.” Preston said.
“Neither does an animatronic with a split personality. What’s up with that?”
“The Sun was an old stage animatronic.”
“Part of its theatrical shtick was that he would turn evil when the lights went out.”
Eventually, the Sun was reprogrammed into the daycare attendant.
“The performance functions were taken out, but the darkness trigger couldn’t be removed.”
“That, combined with the blackouts, created the moon side of the attendant.”
“It resulted in …several undesirable behaviors.”
“Apparently, they held meetings about what to do, and concluded fixing Sun was more trouble than it’s worth. It’s cheaper just to make the lights stay on.”
