Hello tumblr, im doing something of a mini survey so i have two questions:
1. Did you know before reading this that there was mercury present in thermometer fluid
2. Regardless of your previous answer would you say this was common knowledge
#yes...a long time ago...you had to shake the mercury back down to the bottom of the bulb before measuring#then your parents cautioned you not to bite down on the thermometer...for multiple reasons!#then there were also thermometers with red-tinted alcohol inside...i still have one of those for measuring my greenhouse/refrigerator#no I doubt most people today know that silver stuff was mercury#if they've ever even seen that kind of thermometer#my 88 year old mother says that when she was a kid the dentist used to give her a little blob of mercury to play with while she waited#like just in her bare hands...she thought it was fun#amazingly she is still alive to tell the tale!
