"A vivisection of me/Yielded the start of a mystery/Say "Hello,/ honey I'm home!"/Three voices come from the gramophone"

This is art I started like last year iirc that I will likely be using as part of a background image for a cover of the song Honey I'm Home that I've been vaguely planning on since last winter. The pose reference used was from "Marionette 1" by Jookpub Stock on DeviantArt, and the background is a modified version of an actual background from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari that I painted over.

[IMAGE ID: Cesare from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, posed like a marionette puppet with strings tied around his wrists that are seemingly keeping him upright. He stares through the viewer, eyes wide and entranced. His hair flops to the side with the angle of his head. He is on a stage with jagged floorboards, and a painted canvas backdrop of a stylized town behind him. There is a spotlight on Cesare, lighting parts of him and the backdrop behind him up in a sickly pink. END IMAGE ID]

i really did not want to make this type of post again but me and dog are out of food. the fridge is empty and there’s no dog food for uno. i’m on short term disability due to a months long illness which i’m recovering from and my benefits are not enough to cover all my basic needs and bills so i could really use some help, my biggest priority atm is getting food for my dog, anything else after that will be spent on groceries for the month. so if anyone has any extra $ to send my way i’d really appreciate it.

every holocaust memorial day, i always ask people to keep romani people in their thoughts, but this year i’d like to clear up some misconceptions that i see every year w/ a psa

  1. romani people are not white. we’re south asian (from northern india), and each subgroup has a unique racial makeup of asian/white/etc, in different amounts. this is also why we vary wildly in physical appearance/skintone
  2. we still face oppression. what we face, especially in europe, can still be constituted as attempted genocide, as we’re forced to live in hazardous conditions or to give away our children, be sterilized, etc just for the crime of being roma
  3. the ‘g slur’ isn’t just an american issue. the reason some european roma prefer the slur is because, in many countries, there is no term for roma that isn’t a slur, and it’s either the g slur or the literal translation of the n word. i’m romanian, and if you used the slur in my hometown, you’d get slapped, since we just use ‘roma’.
  4. we live in every continent across the world. some of the largest romani populations exist in south america, predominantly in brazil. they are no more and no less roma than their european counterparts, and they, like romani in asia, africa, etc all face unique challenges and oppression.

we’re the largest ethnic minority in europe, and yet have almost no political power, no land ownership power (in some places, we’re forbidden from owning land entirely), etc. with very few reputable charities- a lot of us reject charity by principle, as well as there being a general lack of education about us- the best thing you can do to help romani people is to just spread information, and help individuals when you can.

Today, August 2, 2020, is Rroma Holocaust Memorial Day. On this day in 1944, 2,897 Rromani people were killed in the Z*geunerfamilienlager, or G*psy family camp, in the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. We remember them.

does tumblr know about tim misny??? like has the level of tim misny awareness that exists in northeast ohio broken containment and become known online yet???

Avatar

ok so tim misny is a personal injury lawyer here in ohio.

that’s him. you do not have to remember his face from this image because you’re gonna see it a lot in this post. so mainly i think we all kinda honed in on tim misny because of his slogan

he’s gonna make them pay. he’s gonna get you that money but also it’s a little threatening like he’s gonna fully fuck his legal opponent’s shit up. this sprung tons of local memes. then there were the billboards which were normal at first.

but here’s the thing; we already know what misny does. he makes them pay. so it turns into just saying “you know what i do” which is funny enough if you don’t at all have the context.

but this is not where the absurdity caps out, my friends. no. this is what it has evolved to and they. are. everywhere.

that’s right. no text. just the judging eyes of tim misny, glaring through our skin and into our souls. there is no god. there is no devil. there is just tim misny and he’s gonna make them pay.

@theflannelwizard pics? I would love to see more photos of Ominous Ohio Dad Tim Misny

Couldn’t find a photo of DRIVE SAFE but here’s this:

settle this for me once and for all

is “chai” a TYPE of tea??! bc in Hindi/Urdu, the word chai just means tea

its like spicy cinnamon tea instead of bland gross black tea

I think the chai that me and all other Muslims that I know drink is just black tea

i mean i always thought chai was just another word for tea?? in russian chai is tea

why don’t white people just say tea

do they mean it’s that spicy cinnamon tea

why don’t they just call it “spicy cinnamon tea”

the spicy cinnamon one is actually masala chai specifically so like

there’s literally no reason to just say chai or chai

They don’t know better. To them “chai tea” IS that specific kind of like, creamy cinnamony tea. They think “chai” is an adjective describing “tea”.

What English sometimes does when it encounters words in other languages that it already has a word for is to use that word to refer to a specific type of that thing. It’s like distinguishing between what English speakers consider the prototype of the word in English from what we consider non-prototypical.

(Sidenote: prototype theory means that people think of the most prototypical instances of a thing before they think of weirder types. For example: list four kinds of birds to yourself right now. You probably started with local songbirds, which for me is robins, blue birds, cardinals, starlings. If I had you list three more, you might say pigeons or eagles or falcons. It would probably take you a while to get to penguins and emus and ducks, even though those are all birds too. A duck or a penguin, however, is not a prototypical bird.)

“Chai” means tea in Hindi-Urdu, but “chai tea” in English means “tea prepared like masala chai” because it’s useful to have a word to distinguish “the kind of tea we make here” from “the kind of tea they make somewhere else”.

“Naan” may mean bread, but “naan bread” means specifically “bread prepared like this” because it’s useful to have a word to distinguish between “bread made how we make it” and “bread how other people make it”.

We also sometimes say “liege lord” when talking about feudal homage, even though “liege” is just “lord” in French, or “flower blossom” to describe the part of the flower that opens, even though when “flower” was borrowed from French it meant the same thing as blossom.

We also do this with place names: “brea” means tar in Spanish, but when we came across a place where Spanish-speakers were like “there’s tar here”, we took that and said “Okay, here’s the La Brea tar pits”.

Or “Sahara”. Sahara already meant “giant desert,” but we call it the Sahara desert to distinguish it from other giant deserts, like the Gobi desert (Gobi also means desert btw).

Languages tend to use a lot of repetition to make sure that things are clear. English says “John walks”, and the -s on walks means “one person is doing this” even though we know “John” is one person. Spanish puts tense markers on every instance of a verb in a sentence, even when it’s abundantly clear that they all have the same tense (”ayer [yo] caminé por el parque y jugué tenis” even though “ayer” means yesterday and “yo” means I and the -é means “I in the past”). English apparently also likes to use semantic repetition, so that people know that “chai” is a type of tea and “naan” is a type of bread and “Sahara” is a desert. (I could also totally see someone labeling something, for instance, pan dulce sweetbread, even though “pan dulce” means “sweet bread”.)

Also, specifically with the chai/tea thing, many languages either use the Malay root and end up with a word that sounds like “tea” (like té in Spanish), or they use the Mandarin root and end up with a word that sounds like “chai” (like cha in Portuguese).

Avatar

Thank you @startedwellthatsentence. And English is NOT the only language to do this, either. Spanish words like Alhambra, alcalde, albóndiga, alcohol, etc. all take el or la in the definite, but you know what? All these words come from Arabic where the al means “the”. So if you say el alcalde, you’re saying “the the mayor”—etymologically, anyway. But it doesn’t matter, because alcalde is the Spanish word now that has a specific meaning used in Spanish. Same thing with “chai” in English—or “sushi” or “burrito” or “salsa”. Seriously, in Spanish, salsa means “sauce”, so saying “salsa sauce” in English is redundant. But listen. That’s what happens when languages borrow words. A language doesn’t get to decide to take a word back if a language has borrowed it incorrectly. It just happens. And after a while, the “borrowing” isn’t a borrowing anymore: It’s now a word. And the language of origin can’t change the meaning any more than we can change the modern meaning of Japanese サラリーマン (from English “salary man”). It’s their word now.

hey writers if you want to make a metaphor for racism, please maybe remember that racism is literally based on nothing. Africans weren’t enslaved en masse because the Robo-Musa threatened to destroy the world, they were enslaved because it was economically rewarding and politically convenient. If at any point your allegory for racism includes “so <oppressed group> did this major catastrophe and” then you have not only missed the point but you are literally reinforcing the ideas that racism have let racism self-perpetuate (that e.g. black people are naturally dangerous and violent and must be contained or begrudgingly accepted by the Nice White People)

Unless you establish that catastrophic event to be a lie with propagandistic purpuses. “Actually we invented this fact about this group of people so we could justify their oppression” is a thing that happens. Often.

So since this is where some of my media opinions live now, I want to share the tale of why I, someone who adores the musical 35mm: A Musical Exhibition, got absolutely pissed off by the first production of it I bought a ticket to. It's possibly super petty, but I was obsessed with this show for months before I saw this specific production and I also overthink EVERYTHING. Also because Tumblr is being a pain, it's in a google doc. Man, I wish this website worked.

They did WHAT TO THE SERAPH

Avatar

Yup! I genuinely think they didn't realize the Implications™ of that particular edit- I frankly don't think most people would, and if that production was your first exposure to 35mm you probably wouldn't notice -but like. It was a HUGE disappointment that they didn't think of the implications.

we need to go back to hating tumblr. no more hellsite (affectionate). don't even think of giving these clowns your money. if i see you with a checkmark next to your name i'm opening fire

*sound of gun cocking* they can be disabled

tumblr's current business model isn't profitable and never will be and no amount of scolding from staff blogs or tumblr ad-free pay piggies is gonna fix that. don't let yourself be guilted into buying merch, badges or ad-free. you're throwing your money into a bottomless pit while the techbro ghouls running this website laugh about you at their next board meeting while applauding the shmucks coming up with new ideas on how to twitter- or tiktokify the website

''but tumblr needs to make money!!!''

if tumblr really wants its regular user onboard with keeping the website afloat then we should at least demand that they do the bare minimum in keeping the site functional. and right now, they're not even doing that. every change they've made lately has made the website/app worse. i should give my money to tumblr so what—they can make a more intrusive version of tumblr live? remove the chronical dashboard? come up with an even more transphobic way of doing content moderation? yeah, no thanks

Knowing that trans women of color started the movement in the united states and were literally immediately erased and excluded from what they started is the most deeply jading knowledge.

It is the original sin of the so-called queer community and it damns it from the cradle.

no white gay boy will ever reblog this, watch:

no white gay will reblog this

no white lgb person will reblog this

Without Stonewall, without the efforts of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, the LGBTQ Community wouldn’t be where it is today. Don’t forget the roots, don’t forget the catalyst.

and then TERFs wanna be like, “hmm well the LGBT community existed before Stonewall!”

but like…Becky, of course LGBTQ+ people existed before Stonewall. We’ve all existed since the beginning of time. But the movement got a shock to its senses, a jump-start, a rocket-into-space when that glass shattered via Marsha P. Johnson, and when Sylvia Rivera was up on-stage protesting guess who was on the sidelines heckling her?

The same fuckers who won’t ever reblog or acknowledge this

My apologies to the original poster as I photo captured this post to add to the thread-I reposted this last year for pride and expect to repost it every year I have left-it’s our history people.

Marsha P. Johnson allegedly died of suicide in 1992, and her death was never investigated. Even I, a mere prole, could catch the “she was murdered” vibes from the circumstances surrounding the discovery of her body.

Without a trans black woman, LGBT+ rights would not exist. Never forget. Never “pay it no mind”.

R E M E M B E R

And whatever you do, don’t watch that awful movie Stonewall.  Go watch a documentary on Marsha P. Johnson instead.

there’s a wonderful documentary on netflix called the death and life of marsha p. johnson! very powerful watch.

every white person ever should reblog this

Like so many things we have, we have them because people of color did it first, and white people took credit for it.

  • Resist the Twitterification of tumblr.

i know three people who have uninstalled the app and refuse to log back in on desktop. i'm tempted to join them.

there are new bugs on the mobile app, the new desktop UI is demonstrably worse and doesn't adjust to different screen resolutions, one of my partners got shadowbanned for no reason and can't use half the site now, moderation features are STILL being used to target LGBT and more specifically transfem accounts despite an actual LAWSUIT that happened, tumblr live still can't be turned off, they're taking features away from us and selling them back...

I'm running out of reasons to stay

Genuinely we need to start just absolutely making fun of authors who can't be normal about fat people in their books. We all know about the "She breasted boobily as she titted down the stairs" meme, we need to start doin that shit to (usually) thin authors writing fat characters.

Like I'm sorry but having a scene go from normal to "And then the fatty fats their way to the door, fatly knocking everything over with their fat. Obeasely rubbing their belly the whole time while they squeeze through the too-small door"

Every time I see this shit its like "why are you writing like a chaser." And its not even one author who does it! Its damn near every author I read. No matter what genre, when it was released, because no one can manage to be even slightly normal about fat people I know a scene is about to come to screaming hault so they can do this.

just a reminder that you do not know the names of most of the people in SAG-AFTRA. They are not multi-millionaire A-Listers, not even beloved D-listers with a cult following. They are ordinary people struggling to make a living, living paycheck to paycheck just like the majority of WGA members. The push for SAG to strike was from the bottom up and that is who we have to thank for this moment of entertainment labor solidarity.

Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund to support those striking, as well as teamsters and IATSE members affected by the strikes

why is it always that the sign that the robot/AI is becoming ~*too human*~ is when they fall in looove

give me a robot who realizes they’ve ~*exceeded their programmed parameters*~ when they get incredibly emotionally attached to their favorite movie and start writing fanfiction about it

  • A robot that gets into an editing war on Wikipedia because this other person is wrong and not citing sources and clearly biased and no it will do that calculations later because this is important.
  • A robot who doesn’t like one scientist because it thinks her hair is stupid.
  • A robot that finds logical paradoxes meant to disable it incredibly funny as if they’re jokes and comes up with its own.
  • A robot that develops a deep interest with a random trivial object like doorbells, dice, or ribbons and devotes a lot of its processing power to studying them. Fascinating.
  • A robot that was broken down for a while until some animal nested inside it and after it was repaired it was honored that an organic creature chose it as its shelter.
  • A robot that likes the class of the human-visible electromagnetic spectrum designated as ‘aquamarine’ (#66CDAA) and surrounds itself with this colour as much as possible, even collecting (or stealing) all objects of this colour. Similar colours like sea blue or teal will not be accepted.

“Shaggy doesn’t do drugs, he’s just Like That.” is great characterization. “Shaggy is against doing drugs and will say so to the camera.” is terrible characterization. “Shaggy is a pothead.” is generic but acceptable characterization. But may I present a new angle for consideration: Shaggy has no clue about drug culture. None. We give Fred all of the clueless traits because of the himbo energy but give some of those to Norville Rogers who grew up in a sheltered house with no social life (but a loyal dog!). A Shaggy who loves of all of his friends but has no idea what they’re talking about. “Hey, Shag, do you smoke weed?” “You mean, like, do I burn the weeds growing in my garden? Zoinks, that could cause a wildfire, that’s bad for the earth, man.”
