in case anyone is wondering, james somerton just uploaded a 30 minute """apology""" vid. not worth watching in my opinion so let me summarize for you:

  • he opens by telling everyone that he has been in the hospital after a suicide attempt and that the only reason he is still alive is because his dad knew to call 911
  • spends the rest of the vid pitifully apologizing for "not crediting" other people, like we don't all know that there's a very clear difference between accidentally missing citations and Intentional Plagiarism
  • throws nick under the bus for the gross things he's said about women and ace people, then makes sure to clarify that he's not trying to throw nick under the bus. ok
  • then goes on a little tirade about how he lost his best friend (nick) over this :(( and they'd been besties since like 2011 :(( so sad
  • states multiple times that he's not just upset that he got caught but upset because he didn't realize how many people he was hurting/that he was hurting people at all, which sure is a funny way to ignore all of the people who had confronted him about his plagiarism before only to be met with a harassment campaign led by him
  • insists that telos wasn't a grift and that he was always planning to deliver
  • justifies re-opening his patreon because he doesn't want people to get a surprise charge in january...you can also avoid that by deleting your patreon but ok
  • claims that any estimations of how much money he was making are inaccurate because he lives in toronto where it's very expensive
  • claims that the Literal Plagiarism "poor citation practices" were the result of the volume of content they were producing because he was forced to make a ton of videos that he didn't actually want to make because his audience wanted him to
  • no mention of his intentional manipulation of his audience into believing that he is the only queer creator, no mention of how he encouraged his audience to harass people, did not mention any of the stolen creators by name except for vetto russo
  • thanked hbomb for donating to the people he stole from which is fucking bonkers but ok

that's about it! i just want to be clear: health is not a joke. if james really did attempt, that's bad, and i do hope he makes a full recovery. however, i think it's real fucked up to start your "apology" video with such a blatant grab for pity. i hope he is safe and healthy and far, far away from the internet.
