A training sword, loosely based on the Gjermundbu finds. The finds themselves would be well worth an entire story, but the excellent people at the @Kulturhistorisk Museum in Norway did it better than I ever would (accession number C27317a), so for now all I’ll say is that this sword is meant to be part of a full kit made after this very interesting grave from the second half of the Xth century. The sword belongs to Petersen’s type S, with its big trilobated pommel and upper and lower guards of a very specific shape. While the original sword is lavishly decorated with silver and copper overlay, I opted for inlays instead, as the present object will be used in sparring (you’ll find in some of my previous posts detailed pics of the process). The blunt blade is made of shock-resistant 6150 steel for that specific purpose. The original sword suffered some damage : ritual destruction/fire, mostly, plus the additional damage due to the discovery itself. Therefore,  parts of it had to be reconstructed. This is by no means a final statement,  but merely possibilities, based on known similar examples (such as the sword from Hafurbjarnastöđum). The decoration of the pommel, for instance,  is derived from that observable on the rest of the sword. The key element being, for me,  the interlaced central pattern rather than the knots at each end of the guards. After inlaying and polishing, the fittings were heat-blued. On the original sword, the pommel block is secured by means of inverted T-shaped rivets made of copper, held in a transversal slit cut in the base of the pommel ; but I chose to go for full steel rivets instead. The orignal use of these T-shaped copper things on the real sword does make sense, though. The grip is wrapped in 0.4 mm fine silver wire, and it surprisingly provides a firm hold in the bare hand. It might also appear rather thin,  but then again it is in line with other known examples. The owner will certainly be experimenting a lot with that. Fine silver, also, for the twisted decorative thingies. The pommel was made hollow in its central part,  as on the original (I’m hugely grateful to Vegard Vike for providing the X-rays on twitter and highly detailed pics), still, with its dimensions that sword reaches a hefty 1930 g ! Point of balance is about 9 cm from the cross. Now, Jan Petersen does not provide, in his seminal book De Norske Vikingesverd, any weight for type S swords, but he mentions a type C (IIRC) which nears the 1.8 kg mark - and which has certainly lost some mass due to corrosion. Which means that this one sword I present you here is within the possible weight range for its type. It still makes it a dreadful shield-eater, an arm-bruiser, a denter of helmets, a Giant-slayer. And it tells us a lot - or, rather, opens a lot of questionings - about this specific type. Because most of them were of rather similar dimensions. The blade is 55 mm at its widest, and 815 mm long. The cross has a 120 mm span, and the grip is 100 mm long. The sword itself is 994 mm long overall.

I did a thing: Help a Queer couple pay off their debt, so they can get out of a transphobic household.

We are never going to be able to leave my parent’s home, without getting out from under this mountain of debt we have found ourselves under. We lost the apartment in November 2022, and this is only a temporary fix.

We need help, in a bad way. Some breathing room so that we can get out on our own, and get our lives back on track.
