Focus on one project at a time? Finish a project before starting another? Blasphemy.
Unexpectedly running into old friends can produce surprising situations.
having your favorite character be a minor character is like being a proud mother at a school play and cheering every time your kid comes on stage even though they’re playin the part of tree #3
Robb : when I die I want Theon to lower me into my grave so he can let me down one last time
So i love your blog so much, but i also see a lot of Sansa x Sandor posts. Do you feel that that kind of relationship could ever be consentual with the power dynamic and circumstances? It all seems very wrong on many levels and age being only the most obvious.
Could a Sansa/Sandor relationship ever be consensual with a balanced power dynamic? Certainly.
Could it have been such during the circumstances of their encounters in King’s Landing? No, as a given a 11/12-year-old girl and a 27/28-year-old man have a terrible power dynamic and consent is not truly possible. Furthermore, Sansa was a hostage, a prisoner, and Sandor was a sworn sword to her captors, further unbalancing the power dynamic. (Which does not stop their KL interactions from being dramatically fascinating and complex, as they were written by GRRM to be.)
However, in a potential future when Sansa is of age, adult, safe, and come into the power she deserves? That would be a very different kind of power dynamic. In fact, unbalanced more on Sansa’s side, considering:
- Sansa is a noble lady of House Stark, of a line eight thousand years old, one of the most significant and powerful families in Westeros (once, and will be again).
- In fact, with Robb as King in the North, Sansa was a princess (and she may be again in the future, if not Lady of Winterfell or Queen in the North in her own right).
- As a lady of a great house (perhaps even a ruling lady one day), Sansa would have all the rights and privileges of that status (wealth, men-at-arms, big castle, lots of lands, etc).
- Sandor, while not a lowborn commoner, rather the son of a landed knight, comes from a house that was smallfolk servants only two generations back (his paternal grandparents at the least; and Sandor’s father was born a commoner, squire-age when the family was ennobled), with only a small keep and lands.
- Sandor could not even draw upon that minor noble connection, being without familial support after he left home when his father was murdered by his brother, and therefore was wholly dependent on the Lannisters as their sworn sword. (Until he deserted, and thus lost “all”.)
- Sandor is a wanted outlaw, a deserter and accused of terrible things (that he didn’t do, but nevertheless), who might not even be able to claim his family keep and lands even though his brother’s legally dead, therefore is without… anything, any status, truly.
But aside from the great difference in their status, just letting Sansa age to adulthood would make many of the more problematic issues of the age gap become irrelevant. (Note how the age difference between Jaime and Brienne is rarely remarked upon, even though it’s the same age difference as Sandor and Sansa, most likely because Brienne is 18 when she first appears in the books.) As a matter of fact, if GRRM had gone with his planned 5-year-gap between ASOS and ADWD, Sansa would have been 18 in TWOW, and thus hopefully whatever he planned to do with her romantic life would have been far more comfortable for the readers. (Now… oh well.)
Still, that is why I (and most other shippers) prefer to future-ship sansan, when Sansa is an adult woman. (Just as, say, Arya/Gendry shippers don’t want them to get together when she’s 10 and he’s 15.) Or if a fanfic is set during Sansa and Sandor’s canon interactions, it’s extremely common that Sansa will be aged up to a consenting adult. Same with modern AUs, which may also dramatically change the circumstances of their encounters as a given. Fanart may blur the boundaries more, but I would assume if the artist depicts Sansa as an adult then that’s what they intend her to be – or if less adult, likely it’s supposed to be boundary-pushing, or depicting Sansa’s canon fantasies/imagined kiss with Sandor, or depicting canon scenes GRRM wrote, etc. Same with photomanips/graphics, whether using fancasts or the actors from the show. (Though my favorite ones will always be Sansa as a great lady with Sandor as her loyal captain of the guards/sworn shield/consort/whatever suits them best.)
But in fact, I find it’s safe to assume that any Sansa shipper (who loves her and wants her to be happy) generally imagines her as an adult with the partner of her choice in a consensual loving healthy relationship. I certainly do, as do all the sansan shippers I care to know.

GRRM: I am sometimes surprised by the reactions, of women in particular, to some of the villains. The number of women over the years who have written to me that their favorite characters are Jaime Lannister or Sandor Clegane (the Hound) or Theon Greyjoy… All of these are deeply troubled individuals with some very dark sides, who have done some very dark things. Nonetheless, they do draw this response, and quite heavily, I think, in the case of some of them, from my female readers in particular. Veronica Belmont: I’m a big fan of the Hound, myself, actually. Tom Merritt: Of Sandor? Really? Veronica Belmont: Yeah, the Hound… Maybe it’s not because I feel any compassion towards them, I’m not really sure what the attraction is. Ah, I’m not going to call it attraction, actually. Let’s just say it’s a fascination, perhaps. GRRM: *chuckles* Well, I mean, fascination is one thing, but some of these letters indicate that there really is like a romantic attraction going on there. And I do know there’s all these people out there who are, as they call themselves, the “San/San” fans, who want to see Sandor and Sansa get together at the end. So that’s interesting, too. Tom Merritt: The TV show has sort of played with that a little, and probably stoked those fires. GRRM: Oh, sure. And I’ve played with it in the books. There’s something there, but it’s still interesting to see how many people have responded to it.

Petyr Baelish and Lysa Arryn (Game of Thrones | Season 4 Episode 5), requested by @partycityshowgirlfreak
Sandor Clegane NSFW Alphabet
I just noticed that Sandor is HOLDING HIS BREATH and when Sansa lets go of his hand and walks away he EXHALES sharply… god he was s h o o k.
The POWER Sansa has over him.
It truly baffles me how much sexual tension was in this scene for no apparent narrative reason.
spark !! your !! joy!!
yeah theres no way to stop using amazon completely because they own so many things and many websites use them for hosting, but audible is something we really dont need. amazon is already trying to replace public libraries with “audible amazon libraries” and we cant let that happen. your libraries are already payed for with taxes ((though normally way underfunded because politicians normally dont care enough))
use libby or overdrive for audiobooks or ebooks, support libraries and buy from their used books sale (ive scored so many awesome books, and old books! as well as some great cds and movies) , and many libraries also mail out books!! theres so many options and libraries are always changing to make themselves more accessible for everyone, so support them! theyre such an important part of your community.
also you can just ask for your library to order a book if they dont have it, or they can borrow it from neighboring libraries in your county or even other counties depending on the place! libraries are the best and when i was homeless they were one of the best resources i could have asked for with free ac, wifi, good bathrooms, and books books books ad well as so many other resources, groups, clubs, events … please support your local library!
HEY! YES! This is important! You can check out books from your local library (along with audiobooks and movies and music too!!) without ever having to leave your home. Here’s some links if you don’t know what OP was talking about: OverDrive, Hoopla
BUT ALSO!! Right now libraries are facing a problem with a new policy from very large publisher called Macmillan that’s due to be enacted in November.
For the first two months after a Macmillan book is published, a library can only buy one copy, at a discount. After eight weeks, they can purchase “expiring” e-book copies which need to be re-purchased after two years or 52 lends. As publishers struggle with the continuing shake-up of their business models, and work to find practical approaches to managing digital content in a marketplace overwhelmingly dominated by Amazon, libraries are being portrayed as a problem, not a solution. Libraries agree there’s a problem – but we know it’s not us.
52 lends is nothing when it comes to popular books. In essence, this new policy would require libraries to re-purchase the same eBooks over and over just to continue to provide access to their readers.
Libraries already have to go through a lot of hoops and extra expense to provide digital content, and this policy will just make it even harder, more time consuming, and more expensive, thus making it more difficult for libraries to provide eBooks at a time when demand for eBook access at libraries is growing exponentially. Both the ALA and the PLA have come out strongly against thus policy, and it sets a TERRIBLE precedence for other publishing houses and future policies. It’s a bad idea that’s expensive and ultimately punishes the people who need libraries the most.
But YOU can do something about it, right now! Help us tell Macmillan publishing that their new policy is terrible and will adversely affect the people who need digital library access the most!
Check out the ALA’s action page for some great graphics and an auto-tweet form that will let you voice your displeasure to Macmillan directly.
Or you can just copy and paste it into Twitter from here, and add the graphic too if you want:
Limiting access to new titles for libraries means limiting access for readers who are most dependent on libraries. @MacmillanUSA’s new policy is unacceptable, John Sargent. Cancel the embargo. #eBooksForAll
Please help us keep library eBooks accessible for all! Not only will you help your libraries, but as OP explained, the more you use your libraries and other legal means of acquiring digital books and content, the more you take away from Amazon’s unconscionable domination of the eBook and digital content market. It’s a win-win.
Libby has kept me sane through quarantine like nothing else. Take the time to support your local library and follow the links above.
