Smut Writing for Visual Novels: Getting Down and Dirty

Let's jump right into it! I am a huge fan of NSFW/erotica works. I started practicing with small stories and later progressed into producing NSFW visual novels. Now, as one of the hosts for the NSFW game jam, Josei After Dark, I figured a little 101 post about erotic writing for visual novels may be of use for some people! There are a few key rules that helped me get more comfortable with writing sex scenes in great detail. -Go big or go home -Really get into detail -Show personality in the scenes Go big or go home: My first big attempt at NSFW writing was my cowboy romance game, Roped In. I decided to fully break out of my shell and say "who cares!" and have fun with it! It may feel strange writing out "cock" and "pussy", but at the end of the day, a player can only read member and entrance so many times. "Crude" language can add that spice to a sex scene that you need.

Really get into detail: Describe every nuance you think is important! Did one character touch someone just the right way and make them moan? Did someone cum so hard their knees buckled? Tell the player! These all add in flavor to what can sometimes come off as stilted and awkward scenes otherwise. Feel free to detail character's actions! "I sucked his dick." VS "I wrapped my lips around the head of his cock, using my other hand to pump his shaft. My lover groaned as his fingers knitted into my hair and held me in place." One of those is straight to the point, but where's the spice? You need to captivate the audience and point out who's doing what and how it feels! Show personality in the scenes: Is your love interest shy? Maybe they're more dominant? You need to portray their sexual ideals and take into account of who they are! Not everyone is (always) totally submissive or dominant though, so it's fun to play with the dynamics. Maybe your main character's generally submissive boyfriend snaps after being teased too much and gets on top. Perhaps a dominant partner desires sweet love making. There are a plethora of examples where dominant doesn't just need to be big and bossy and submissive isn't just whimpering (althought we love whimpering) and needy. Tweak the reactions and see what feels right. Of course there are some scenarios where a character will be completely submissive or dominant, but for many cases finding a balance will make an erotic scene more immersive and realistic. In conclusion: The biggest thing is to have fun with it! Don't write something you don't like and make sure to take baby steps if you need to! Erotica can be hard to grow comfortable with. Thanks for reading and I hoped any of my little tips helped! Disclaimer: These are all just my personal opinions and shared as general advice. These tips are not the end-all, be-all. Feel free to use any parts that help and good luck on your smut!
