Beautiful Disaster

THE SIGNS AS THINGS

Aries: You are a bonfire on an autumn night, ash circles above you and mingles with the stars. You are blades of grass inching through the snow- the first sign of Spring. You are the half remembered lullaby that stays in the head of an adult long after they fell asleep as a child.
Taurus: You are the strings of a violin vibrating in harmony. You are dappled sunlight streaming through a canopy of green leaves. You are smooth round pebbles on a beach, kept and saved by children who see you as treasure.
Gemini: You are the darkness behind stars that heralds so much more than what we know. You are chopped wood outside a cottage on a Winter's night. You are a cold mountain stream destined to provide life for thousands.
Cancer: You are red coral in a reef, you have seen thousands of years and have sheltered generations of marine lie. You are the pollen on a bee's legs, spreading around gardens so that people miles away from where you once were can see you bloom. You are a plane ticket stub stored in an old woman's diary.
Leo: You are a childhood friendship revisited years later where time has not stopped compatibility. You are music blaring from the penthouse apartment of a man showing his first grandchild how to play the piano. You are the cool wind so dearly cherished on a hot summer's day.
Virgo: You are a forever expanding desert, the shape of you changes each day with the wind and animals and humans alike travel for days to enter your hidden oasis'. You are birthday candles blown out tentatively, silk-like smoke rises above you and you are a wish come true. You are a friendship bracelet, a wedding ring, a family heirloom, a locket containing pictures of loved ones.
Libra: You are a mirror that has seen beautiful, excited faces for hundreds of years. You are a field of daisies and dandelions, you are not a weed: you are the crowns on the heads of barefooted children. You are a painting in an art gallery, people fall in love with you and have fallen in love in front of you.
Scorpio: You are the righteous fury of the seas, nothing can curb your eternal majesty. You are beautiful clothes wrapped in tissue paper and ribbon. You are a turquoise swimming pool on the hottest day of the year, they flock to the cool relief you give.
Sagittarius: You are a first kiss on New Years Eve, you prophesy a new year of happiness. You are the secret spot where lovers meet in the dead of night. You are a good book being read for the first time by candlelight during a black-out.
Capricorn: You are a pair of newly broken-in pointe shoes dancing on the stage for the first time. You are the blanket fort that protects children scared of the dark. You are the gleams of sunlight breaking through a cloudy sky.
Aquarius: You are sea foam crashing on cliffs hewn rough with erosion. You are comets swirling through a dancing glitter sky. You are the shared dreams between people who have never met.
Pisces: You are a train journey to a new, exciting place. You are lined paper covered in half-thought poems and sketches of friends during class. You are the planets orbiting around the sun like pieces of a watch that have spilled out into the galaxy.

Barney Ronald Fuller was executed by lethal injection on October 5th, 2016 at Huntsville Prison in Texas, for the murder of his neighbors in 2003.

Fuller had a reputation in rural Lovelady, Texas for being an angry drunk. Nathan and Annette Copeland were his neighbors, who had a tense relationship with Fuller over his habit of firing his guns at all hours of the day and night in an unsafe manner, while being intoxicated. Things came to a head on New Year’s Day in 2001, when Fuller shot and destroyed the transformer that provided electricity to the Copeland’s home. On that day, in a phone call to Annette Copeland, Fuller reportedly said “Happy New Year. I’m going to kill you.” Thus began a two-year feud between Fuller and the Copelands, with multiple threatening phone calls, arguments and calls to law enforcement. In May of 2003, Fuller was summoned to court for arraignment in charges brought by the Copelands. He returned home from court and began a two-day drinking binge, all the while becoming increasingly enraged at the family for pressing charges. On May 14th, 2003, Fuller loaded up with firearms and shot at the house 59 times. Annette Copeland called 911 and was on the line with dispatch when Fuller kicked in the back door of the residence and walked into the home, shooting Nathan Copeland four times. Dispatch heard Fuller scream “Party’s over bitch!” before he shot Annette to death in a bathroom. The couple’s children, 14 year old Cody, and 10 year old Courtney, were asleep in bed. Fuller went to Cody’s room and shot him twice, wounding him badly, but he survived. Courtney hid under her bed, and Fuller was unable to find her in the darkness of her bedroom. Hours after the incident, Fuller called authorities and stated that he would turn himself in peacefully. He was found guilty of capital murder and was sentenced to death. Fuller spent over 13 years on Texas Death row, and as his execution date grew closer, he begged his attorneys to cease their appeals on his behalf, saying he would rather die than “keep living in this hell hole.” Cody and Courtney Copeland were witnesses to the execution, and Fuller did not acknowledge them or make eye contact. When asked if he had any final words, he replied “I don’t have anything to say. You can proceed on, Warden Jones.” He took a deep breath as he was injected with a lethal dose of pentobarbital. He appeared to fall asleep, then awoke with a start and blurted out “Hey, you fixin’ to put me to sleep.” He then began snoring, and 30 seconds later all movement stopped. He was declared dead thirty-eight minutes later. Barney Fuller was the seventh convicted killer to be executed in Texas in 2016.

Barney Ronald Fuller is scheduled to be executed at 6pm on Wednesday, October 5th at Huntsville prison in Texas, for killing two of his neighbors. Fuller waived his appeals in order to speed up his execution, stating “I do not want to go on living in this hellhole” to his attorney. Fuller is the first person to be executed in Texas since April, the longest lull in executions since 1978.

Betty Lou Beets, (March 12, 1937 – February 24, 2000) born: Betty Lou Dunevant, was a North Carolinian woman executed for the murder of her fifth husband. Betty Lou was born into a tough life, to struggling, alcoholic tobacco farmers in rural North Carolina. At the age of three, she suffered from a traumatic bout with the measles, which resulted in significant hearing loss. At the age of five, she claimed that she had been sexually abused by her father and several others. As a young girl, her family relocated to Hampton, Virginia so that her father could work as a machinist for the Langley Research Center. When she was twelve years old, her mother was institutionalized and never rejoined the family. Betty was left to care for her younger brother and sister. At the age of fifteen, she married her first husband, with whom she had 6 children over the course of 17 years. In 1969, he left her for good. Less than a year later, Betty married her second husband, Billy York Lane, who was abusive. During an argument, Billy became violent and broke her nose, and she shot him in the side. She was charged with attempted murder, but the charges were dropped after Billy testified that he was asking for it. The couple divorced in 1972. The following year, Betty met Ronnie Threlkold, who became her third husband. They were married for six years, but dissolved their union when Betty attempted to run him over with her car. In 1979, she met her fourth husband, Doyle Wayne Baker, but the union was short-lived and uneventful, and in 1982 she met her fifth, and final husband, Jimmy Don Beets.

In August of 1983, Betty buried the remains of Jimmy Beets in the front yard of her Texas home with the help of one of her sons. She reported her husband as missing, and planted evidence in a canoe in Cedar Creek Lake, which led authorities to believe that he had fallen overboard and drowned. They spent weeks searching the lake for his body, finding nothing. Two years later, they had gathered enough evidence against Betty Lou execute a search warrant for her property, which found the remains of Jimmy Beets, and the remains of Betty Lou’s fourth husband, Doyle Wayne Baker. Both men had been shot in the head with the same .38 caliber pistol. The prosecution alleged that Betty Lou committed the murders as a “crime of passion” because her traumatic upbringing, coupled with abuse and neglect, followed by several failed and abusive relationships led Betty Lou to be angry towards men and want revenge. During trial, two of Betty’s children testified against her, but admitted that they helped her bury and conceal the murders. At the same time, Betty pleaded not guilty and claimed that her children had committed the murders without her knowledge. She was found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of Jimmy Beets, but was never tried or convicted for the murder of Doyle Baker.

In February of 2000, at the age of 62, Betty Lou Beets was executed by lethal injection at Huntsville Prison in Texas. She did not request a final meal or provide any last words. At the time of her execution, she had five living children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was the second woman executed in Texas after the death penalty was reinstated in 1972.

Anonymous asked:

What happens to inmates in jail when there's hurricanes, earthquakes or some natural disaster? Since the whole city evacuate and etc, what happens to people in jail/prison?

This is a rather timely ask, as San Quentin State Penitentiary is located near the San Andreas Fault, which has seen a lot of seismic activity over the last week. The short answer is that most prisons have emergency contingency plans in place for natural disasters that could occur in their area, but their rate of effectiveness and successful execution is questionable at best.

Penitentiaries that were built within the last 30 years or so are designed to withstand the force of a strong tornado or hurricane, and the damage is usually limited to broken windows and fences, and damage to the towers. Older prisons that were not compliant with modern standards of storm preparedness have mostly retrofitted their buildings in order to remain standing, although there are some that are still woefully outdated. Prisons operate almost entirely through computer systems to open and close gates and cell doors, and to maintain video observation of the inmates, so they will always have a backup generator system in place if the electricity is knocked out by a storm. When a tornado or hurricane warning is issued in a county that hosts a penitentiary, the inmates are immediately put on lockdown, which is when they are confined to their cells 24 hours a day. This is mostly to keep a tight lid on their headcount so that nobody can attempt to escape amidst the chaos. Prisons don’t evacuate their inmates because it takes a huge amount of time to move inmates in large groups from one place to another. Depending on their security level, it can take over an hour just to load 30 inmates onto a bus. The larger the inmate population, the less likely it is that they will be evacuated in a natural disaster.

In the case of a wild fire, if a prison has a wildfire suppression program in place, the inmate fire fighters will be brought out to begin knocking it down, and will assist local reinforcements when they arrive. If the fire began on prison grounds, the inmates will be evacuated to other sections of the prison until it can be contained.

When Hurricane Katrina was headed towards New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin issued the first-ever mandatory evacuation of the city, but announced that “the prisoners will stay where they belong.” At the Orleans Parish Prison (OPP), inmates were held all together in a gymnasium. When the storm hit, the electricity and backup generators failed. Because the doors were all controlled by a computer system, inmates were trapped inside, in rising water contaminated by sewage.

Hundreds of prisoners eventually did end up being evacuated, and were held for days without food or water on Interstate-10 in the hot sun. {click} to read more about that horrific nightmare.

The situation is the same for earthquakes, which we can somewhat predict, but not with enough accuracy or enough of a head start to warrant an evacuation of a prison, especially with prisons such as San Quentin. With an inmate population over 3,000, it would take a huge amount of time to safely move the inmates to other prisons in the state, if that were even possible. Due to extreme overcrowding in California’s prison system, there wouldn’t be enough space to put everybody.

So long story short, major natural disasters are terrifying, especially for inmates, who are not allowed to escape from them.

Draconids Meteor Shower Magick 🐉🌠

The Draconids Meteor Shower is to take place on October 7th of this year. This meteor shower is named for the constellation Draco (Latin for “Dragon”). In general, meteor showers correspond with hope, wishes, luck, fortune, and wealth.

The occurrence of the Draconids Meteor Shower specifically would be great for magickal workings having to do with:

  • Wisdom
  • Power
  • Knowledge
  • Prosperity
  • Luck
  • Protection
  • Dragons

One particular dragon that inspired the name of the constellation Draco is Ladon, a dragon whose task was to guard the golden apples of the Garden of the Hesperides (Hera’s orchard).

Because of this, you may want to incorporate the use of the color gold and apples in your magickal workings.

Associated Herbs/Resins:

  • Hyssop
  • Dragon’s Blood
  • Allspice
  • Basil
  • Garlic
  • Cinnamon
  • Chili powder
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Cayenne pepper

Associated Crystals:

  • Garnet
  • Red Jasper
  • Ruby
  • Bloodstone
  • Tiger’s Eye
  • Quartz (clear and smoky)
  • Fire Opal
  • Citrine
  • Carnelian
  • Amber
  • Goldstone
  • Sunstone

Magickal Ideas:

  • Make fire salts with a pinch of gold glitter
  • Create the constellation Draco out of corresponding crystals
  • Carve the constellation into a wax cube or candle and let it melt
  • Burn corresponding incense
  • Make appropriate offerings to Draco
  • spray paint apples with gold paint or make drawings of golden apples
  • shiny things, especially items that are gold in color
  • candles anointed with dragon oil
  • dried or fresh herbs & flowers
  • incense (sticks, cones, or loose herbs)
  • apple scented things (candles, perfume, etc.)
  • red meat (maybe even some jerky)
  • dragon snax
  • Go outside, locate the meteor shower in the sky, and harness energy from it
  • Use the energy from the meteor shower to charge various items
  • Summon the spirit of Draco to aid in your spellwork for the evening of the meteor shower (for experienced practitioners; click here for a guide)
  • Play Skyrim

Aside from working with the Draconian aspect of this meteor shower, you can also perform general cosmic magick. Click here for my post on Star Magick.

These ideas and correspondences are based on personal associations so they may not work for everyone. In that case, I would suggest reading “Resources for Dragon Magic” by @magic-for-the-masses, and visiting @nightkunoichi‘s blog for more detail on how to work with dragons.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT

Please, please, PLEASE never tell a witch with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or any other hallucination/delusion disorder that their hallucinations are spirits/demons/ghosts/etc. Please, please, PLEASE do not advise them to go off their medication. I am all for holistics to a certain degree but you CANNOT validate something as serious as hallucinations or delusions because it can make things seriously, seriously worse. As someone who went off their medication because a reiki master claimed to have cured them, I can tell you now, it isn’t safe.

If someone wants to take a holistic approach to their healthcare/disorder, that should be between them and a licensed professional.

Please, please, PLEASE stop trying to tell me to go off my medication. You have no idea what a challenge it is to get me to take them in the first place and I’ve been on them three years strong without skipping.

I’m not saying big pharmacy drugs are better than holistics. I’m just saying it is dangerous to try and take the place of a doctor who this person has been working with and the routine/regimen they’ve worked out in order to treat their disorder.

Thank you.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT.

If you are not a licensed medical professional, by which I mean you have gone to school and received a degree and an official license to practice some form of medicine, DO NOT try to tell people how they “should” treat their mental and physical ailments.

And most especially, DO NOT shame people who want or need to be on medication. That’s their business, not yours, and they know better than you do what they need and what works for them.

And even if you are a medical professional, just remember that if people want your advice on their condition, they’ll ask for it.
