one of the funniest things about being gay is when u accidentally become homonormative in your head and assuming everything is gay like ill be listening to a love song and im like “wait… is she singing about a guy?? why would she wanna do that” bc i forgot about the concept of heterosexuals and that being straight is considered the default by most people lol

are you ever on your phone looking at gay shit and then your parent starts coming towards you, so you keep scrolling down to try and get the gay shit off of your feed and then realise there is no escape and you’re actually scrolling through a bottomless pit of gay shit?

The most beautiful thing about #20GayTeen isn’t just the fact that we get all this queer content, it’s the fact that we get it without it being a huge thing. We don’t get characters coming out and then having one short kiss with their significant other in the end of the movie, or them having about 5 minutes of screentime per episode together with hardly any kisses, or openly queer singers singing ambiguous songs so everyone can relate.

Those were important steps, of course, but they made it seem special to even give us some representation. We were always expected to be content with the little representation we were getting, even if it was bad, because we could have been happy to even get it.

So we would cling to every little piece of representation we’d get, watch every little show with just a hint of queer characters, no matter how bad it was sometimes, how bad it treated its queer characters sometimes, as we’d been happy to see ourselves represented on screen at all.

But now there’s a change in media. And it is so beautiful to see it. Suddenly a queer YA rom com isn’t an indie film anymore that you can only buy on DVD or stream online but a movie shown worldwide in many local cinemas. The same sex couple in a series gets as much screentime and kisses as its straight ones do and we get to see them in daily situations and huge storylines that don’t revolve at all anymore about them being queer. Another well beloved main character of a series that has been read by many fans as queer actually gets revealed as queer, instead of the writers continuing to code her as such but never actually pulling through with it. And also we get to see artists rising to fame that are openly queer, using same sex pronouns in their songs.

And sure, not everything is perfect yet, there’s still a long way to go, but there is a change happening, in the right direction. Because being queer is not this huge thing anymore that can only be hinted at in order to not scare off part of the audiences. It is more and more portrayed as what it really is - normal.
