Halp, I've Fallen Into Tumblr

Evolutionary Anthropologist-in-training (B.A. in anthro/MSc Bioarch) born in 1980, unreformed dispenser of sarcasm, Lover of renn faires (yep that's me in the icon), skeptic who wishes she could believe. Everything is interesting. Trying to be a decent human and sometimes failing. I've been to a lot of places in the US, and some places not in the US. I'm only happy when I'm wandering.

oh yeah have i ever told yall of the academic war i have been an unwilling soilder in for the past two years

okay SO. i have two professors that both teach this one subject, but different classes. they have different last names, so i didnt know this at first and espically since they are academic RIVELS at my school, but they are MARRIED. but for the past 8 years they have been in an academic WAR of geospatical sciences data. more accurately, the raster vs vector data debate. i am personally on the side of "both have their pros and cons and can be utalizied to the utmost efficency" but both professors are like, DEADLOCKED in insistanting one is better then the other

so, professor A is my mentor. i like him a lot, and he was the main person that taught me the most abotu Eris and ArcGIS. professor B is a professor i had one for class, and shes nice and knows a lot of little tricks about Eris programming but mostly relies on arcMAP because shes the raster data professor.

and THESE MOTHERFUCKERS. have written no less then 30 papers that is basically like a "re: re: re: re: re: re: vector data is better then raster fuck you" but like, Professionally. and they leave stupid notes in the footnotes that read "Reguardless of Professor A's opinions reguarding the efficency of Vector data, Raster data has a more efficant polygon computing rate and is the most commonly used program on interplantaring mapping" and its HILARIOUS

ive read all of their papers, and its basically like reading an email chain between a married couple arguing over the colors of the kitchen backsplash for their new home. its HILARIOUS. but obviously, because of their differnet last names and because they act like they HATE each other, NOT VERY MANY PEOPLE REALIZES THEYRE MARRIED

until like LAST WEEK

professor B publishes a paper that casually drops the word "husband"

and obviously all the students are like "oh i didnt know u were married!" because we read that shit like how white suburban mothers read People Magazine

and shes like "yeah, its Professor A"

and we all FLIPPED. THE FUCK. OUT

we thought the framed picture of the two of them on professor A's desk was ironic because hes that type of guy

like, you gotta undestand. these two have gotten into YELLING matches in hallways. these two refuse to go onto trips with each other. but apparently they have a system where they quite LITERALLY leave all of their work at work and drive home in seperate cars and literally NEVER mention work at home. it is SO funny

That's probably foreplay for them.

I will never get over how weird it feels to have tragic and emotional chapters of your life where you just also still go to work, and the grocery store, and see funny videos online all while feeling such paralyzing fear and heartache

life just goes on no matter what

It’s 2:00am and I have finally finished the shawl that I have been working on to wear to Easter breakfast. Which is at 10:00am.

That’s cool. I just thought this was a table wearing underwear.

RATING: RELIABLE

The above is from this article from The Guardian.  The images are from MYA Network. The caption on their website reads:

Source: ‘When a sperm and egg get together, the body creates tissue in order to support the developing pregnancy.  Here are photos of that tissue from 5-9 week pregnancies.  This is called the gestational sac, and it’s like the “house” for the pregnancy. Inside this sac there are cells that have the potential to become a fetus but there is no visible embryo at this stage. We rinsed off the blood and menstrual lining (decidua) for these photographs.’

The published images sparked a lot of debate, leading to the story being picked up by other news outlets. For example:

Source: ‘Last week, the Guardian published images of pregnancy tissue after abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The small size and appearance of the tissue were shocking to many. We have all absorbed, knowingly and unknowingly, the pervasive anti-abortion narrative that a pregnancy resembles a tiny baby starting in the earliest weeks. Though an early embryo can be seen under the magnification of ultrasound, it can take months for it to be perceptible to the naked eye.’

Source: ‘People have responded in disbelief, citing the (magnified) images they’ve seen on ultrasounds. […] ”Think of the illustrations on pregnancy and medical websites. The Mayo Clinic, one of the preeminent medical organizations in the country, shows week-by-week illustrations of embryonic and fetal development without any context of scale, like the rulers in the MYA photos.’

As stated in the article, whilst people talk about a ‘heartbeat’ at 6 weeks, there is no heart developed at this stage - only a group of cells that will become part of the heart.

Source: ‘But what exactly do we mean when we talk about a “fetal heartbeat” at six weeks of pregnancy? Although some people might picture a heart-shaped organ beating inside a fetus, this is not the case. Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect “a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby,” said Dr. Saima Aftab, medical director of the Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future “pacemaker” of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals, she said.’

It should also be noted that the images show an embryo, not a fetus, until the 9th week.

Source: ‘In human pregnancies, a baby-to-be isn’t considered a fetus until the 9th week after conception, or week 11 after your last menstrual period (LMP).’

The co-founders of the MYA Network responded in a New York Times article.

Source: ‘Many people, even those who support abortion rights, did not believe the photos were accurate. Some insisted we had deliberately removed the embryos before taking the photos. The images weren’t consistent with those often seen in embryological textbooks, magnified on ultrasounds or used in anti-abortion propaganda; these enlarged images are not what you see with the naked eye after an abortion. A Stanford gynecologic pathologist has validated our photos, but many people could not believe the pictures were presented unaltered.

I’ve never seen pictures like this.

leverage is actually insane for writing harry wilson. in ANY other show he would have been the obnoxious universally hated new guy and yet he’s just a funky little lawyer man & im obsessed with him

I think that really was the trick with integrating Harry Wilson into the show - he's competent! he's very good at what he does. But he's so completely out of his environment he makes mistakes for the whole first season (when he isn't deliberately doing shady shit - which also helps him fit in, because which of the original crew didn't make mistakes at their teammates' expense over the course of the original run)

And by season 2 he's more seasoned, but still very much the newcomer and approaches every new skill he picks up with earnest cheer.

Harry Wilson rolled into Leverage a work in progress, and that's what made him a joy to watch.

(The same reason Breanna can step into Hardison's role and bring something new and fun to the show, rather than just make us miss Hardison and resent his replacement)

I am super against light pollution, and have been for decades

but I am also super annoyed by the way it's framed as "without light pollution you can see how beautiful the night sky is" way more prominently than it's framed as "hey, did you ever stop to think of how much energy/resources/money are literally wasted by having so much light shine up into the sky?"

so people get the idea that light pollution can only be remedied by eliminating all night-time light, which would make being outside at night very inconvenient, instead of by making night-time light shine only on the ground where, y'know, the people who need it are

The mildest example of what OP's talking about in Dunedin, Aotearoa:

This is just with the streetlamp equivalent of using lampshades. Imagine what truly directional city lights could achieve?

my toxic xennial trait is that i believe something should either be software (in which case after i download it i shouldn't need to be connected to use it) or a web page (which shouldn't require me to download anything to use it, however badly, in a browser). fuck your mandatory single function constant connection apps

You’re so right. Say more

Years ago I overheard (eavesdropped upon) a telephone conversation between a public parks official and a golf course owner.

Parks Official: No sir, you cannot

Parks Official: No. They are a protected species

Parks Official: You CANNOT shoot them

Parks Official: Or poison them, no. Or trap them

Parks Official: If you like, we can-- no, I'm it. I'm the ranking official here. There's nobody above me. My boss? You mean... the governor's office? Sure, I guess. Okay bye

After he hung up, he gave me this thousand-yard stare before answering my unvoiced question.

"There's a flock of flamingos at the 9th green disrupting golfers. He wanted permission to go out there with a shotgun and take care of matters, but sensed there might be... legal ramifications. So he called us."

I laughed. "Does that happen often?"

"Oh, we get calls like that a couple times a month."

Country clubs should be burned to the ground and their golf courses turned into community gardens i am 10000% serious

Was golf created for the sole purpose of hoarding ridiculously large amounts of land just to brag about how little they use it?

me: so what job experience do you guys bring to the team

guard one: well, we have a lot of experience with breakdancing—

guard two: no we absolutely do not. but we did guard these two doors for a bit

guard one: i killed jfk

guard two: he didn’t

me: guard two, if I asked guard one if he killed jfk, what would he say?

guard two: he’d say he didn’t

me: got it. now I’d like to ask you about some—

me:

me: wait what

If you're an artist and are having trouble building followers, especially if you're new on tumblr or back after leaving, reblog this with some of your art. It will be visible to everyone checking the notes. Everyone keep checking the notes and follow whoever puts their cool art in them. People keep telling me I'm Tumblr famous so maybe this helps!

Notes are JAM PACKED with art to look at and users to follow so please check them out!! I decided I wouldn’t reblog or mention any specific ones so as not to give anyone more attention than anyone else. Just so you notice this post instead of scrolling past it here’s a microscopy photo of a saltwater tardigrade, I bet some of you didn’t know tardigrades came in other shapes but they do:

photo is from here. Anyway please look at the art in the notes ty

Hi Neil! I saw your reblogged post about book banning and censorship. One of the points was that the one and only reason a book should be removed is if it’s restricted for intending harm. I am a librarian, and hoping you can promote an addition, which is, weeding in libraries is a necessary thing! Books are going to get removed and recycled, and it’s not censorship, it’s spring cleaning. I am a librarian and have seen colleagues called book burners for deaccessioning books that are falling apart or have outdated information. Libraries need to weed, and we need the support of the public in these terrifying times where people DO want us to remove books for absolutely no justifiable reason. So I hope this message can be seen by the broader public, and I urge them to stand by their local librarians and not panic if they see some old romance novels in the recycling bin out back.

Honestly I enjoy weeding. Idk why, I just like it. I work in a really small branch and we HAVE to get rid of stuff or we'd never have room for anything new.

But you know what I DON'T enjoy? When stupid ass conservatives get their panties in a wad and hide out LGBTQ+ books bc they're too sensitive to view such objectionable material. 🙄 Please don't hide things at the library, for any reason. It drives us nuts.
