Not hassling anyone for being weird at Pride includes disabled people too. Don't hassle people because they smell weird, or they have a device you don't know stuck to them, or they're talking to themselves, or they just downed a pill or injected something, or anything that makes you look sideways but isn't hurting anyone. It's hard enough to get to Pride when you're disabled, don't be a shithead when we do get there.

Not hassling people also means not asking invasive questions about why they're doing something you think is weird. Ain't your business.

I redesigned the cover of Lolita! (sound on for more context)

Did you know that Vladimir Nabokov didn't want any girls on the cover of Lolita? He wrote to his editors “I want pure colors, melting clouds, accurately drawn details, a sunburst above a receding road with the light reflected in furrows and ruts, after rain. And no girls.” There is one subject which I am emphatically opposed to: any kind of representation of a little girl.” Yet many covers of Lolita picture illustrations of little girls, often sexualized, suggestive images of body parts or of adult women posing as seductresses. These covers have been part of shaping the collective psyche around Lolita. The online Merriam Webster dictionary defines Lolita as "a precociously seductive girl." My main goals in redesigning the cover of this edition of Lolita was to get rid of the representation of Dolores Haze as a seductress and to keep the focus on Humbert Humbert. As Nabokov himself says in 1975 on a French televised interview "Outside of Mr Humbert's maniacal gaze, there is no nymphet."

It says so much about our society that a book meant to expose pedophiles has instead been used to make creeping on young girls understandable.

Read the actual book, it’s quite good. It juxtaposes jarring reality with the pedo delusions of Humbert. For example, his narrative will focus on how she looks at him.... like a temptress, flirting with him, silently offering carnal delights etc... and then Lolita will say something like ‘Can I get an ice cream cone?’ and you think - oh shit, he’s projecting all that nonsense onto a little girl who has no idea what this creep is on about.

Love knowing from the notes that this is exactly as weird and funny in both languages to the point that it's currently a meme over there

Can everyone flood WA Minister Sue Ellery's inbox telling the WA Labor government to actually improve WA rental laws with basic things like banning no-ground evictions and introducing rental price increase caps??

Email here:

Minister.ellery@dpc.wa.gov.au

After 4 years of reviewing the rental laws they've decided on a few minor changes that are admittedly good like allowing pets and making it so landlords can only increase the rent every 12 months instead of 6 - but that still leaves tenants with no guarantees that rental hike in 12 months won't be vastly outside their ability to pay. There's no guarantees the property will be in reasonable condition or that maintenance will be done. There's no regulations in place to provide long term security because tenants still face eviction with ease if they request basic treatment or the landlord wants to exploit the market for hundreds more in profit a week.

Cats are great companions but they can't emotionally offset the threat of eviction and poverty just because Mark McGowan and Sue Ellery wanted to make sure they didn't step on the toes of any rich property investors. I'm sure being able to put a poster over the black mould the landlord refuses to reply to emails about will give the living space a bit more cheer to it.

These reforms don't even bring WA in line with other states! FOUR YEARS TO COME TO THIS DECISION AND IT'S UNINSPIRING AND HALF ASSED!!

Email Hon. Sue Ellery and every WA State MP you can.

The next sitting day is Tuesday the 13th of June so if anyone wants to protest at the WA State Parliament, plenty of MPs will available to watch from their offices by 11am.

Labor has a majority in both chambers. This is the best chance they'll ever have to take care of renters and if they squander this they will never have so easy a chance again.

Renters need better.

Demand better.
