She/her/they/them. 23. INTP.Leo.Ace.Bi romantic. Queer. Beginner witch. This is just a space for things that interest me and an amplifier for the voices of others.

rocky horror is the worst and is also transmisogynistic can we please finally get over this shit movie

ok but like the writer is transgender nonbinary and the language used in the play was the preferred language by trans people of that time can we not deny parts of our history because we’ve evolved since then thanks

So fucking much this.

PS, youth of today: you’ll be saying the same damn thing about art from this time before too long, for good or for ill. Terminology will, in fact, change. Definitions will, in fact, shift. It always does, they always do.

PPS, it is pretty much impossible to overstate how life-alteringly important this movie was to kids who didn’t conform to standard expectations of gender and sexuality, back in the day. Especially when back in the day was the mid-to-late 1980s, when the only queers you saw on TV were neutered AIDS tragedies, Bowie was playing straight, and even Elton John was married to a woman, and midnight showing of RHPS were pretty much the only place that felt like home. It was mental life raft for a lot of people.

I was one of them.

ALSO IT’S A SATIRE IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE AN “OFFENSIVE” PORTRAYAL IT’S MAKING FUN OF STRAIGHT PEOPLE WHO ARE AFRAID OF US IT’S EXAGGERATING THEIR IDEAS OF US TO THE POINT OF LUDICROUSNESS THAT’S THE ACTUAL POINT

also you fail to understand just how many, many people were allowed to be queer for Tim Curry and how many doors that began to open

we say this as someone who was in several closets and first saw the film when we were 18 and that was 1981 ffs this film MATTERED

Rocky Horror kept me alive.

Dear children.

I know your pitchforks are shiny and sharp and you’re dying to use them.

But please. Before you go a’pokin’

Learn your history before you burn your history.

When I came out to a (straight) friend of mine in high school (late 90s), she enthusiastically said, “You have to watch Rocky Horror! You need to meet your people.”

I watched it. I didn’t understand it. I was still partially ensnared by my conservative upbringing and was embarrassed by the open sexuality. I was squirmy and uncomfortable. I didn’t really like it.

The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve come to value it. One, I’ve lost a lot of my hangups around openly sexual things, so I don’t feel weird about everyone running around in underwear and lingerie and bondage gear. Two, I’ve come to value finding a connection with my people, as my friend so wisely suggested I needed to do. And while I value it for what it was, I value it even more for what it IS: A way for me to connect to my elders, who are so frequently inaccessible to me for one reason or another. A window into a time where that movie was defiance, was pride, was a riot all its own. It said we’re here, and we will not be ashamed of ourselves. A bulwark against fear in the time of renewed aggression in which we find ourselves.

Anyway. Rocky Horror. I appreciate it for helping me meet my people.

The big discourse on twitter right now is that writers going on strike or cancelling their own series are breaking an invisible “contract” they made with their fans and all creators owe their fans a satisfying conclusion to their stories. Actually all fans owe all creators for entertaining them and if a creator says “I don’t want to perform this labor anymore,” then regardless of the cliffhanger that leaves you with, your only response should be “take care! Thank you for all your hard work!!!” :)

Like it or not… this.

TRUTH. What you need is imagination, and you don’t need to go anywhere to use it.

Yeah, sure, seeing new things is helpful as a fantasy writer. But. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that exposure to new things is the same as traveling. You know what else exposes you to new things?  The internet. Documentaries. Books. Freaking Youtube. So when you’re bored of cats and cooking tutorials, go on an adventure!

You wanna write create some fantasy creatures but don’t know where to start? Go check out some videos The Weird Creatures Earth has Had.

Want some inspiration for your Super Evil Villain’s Villanous Deeds?

Or maybe you want some weird locations to kick start your Fantasy World Terraforming?

But maybe you’re basing fantasy on the modern world?

That’s just the stuff I could quickly grab. Things I’m subscribed to, that I know offhand. There is So. Much. Stuff. Online.

The best thing about the internet is that it means its not just the fortunate sons that get to learn, and explore and imagine and write. We get to see stories from all over the place, from all sorts of people, who bring All Kinds of New Ideas.

I like you.

This would help a lot of people, and it's one of the reasons it's so important to push back against the "but the parties are equally bad, so you shouldn't bother voting" type rhetoric.

jesus christ this would be huge.

hi! if you see this and think it's a good idea: PLEASE leave a comment. it's super easy & you can do this in <5 minutes:

When a government agency proposes a rule change like this, they legally must have a public comment period before finalizing it. AND they have to read and respond to those comments in the final draft of the regulation. Not enough people are aware of this , but it can really have an impact!!

This link will take you to the Federal Register page for the proposed rule, where you click the big green button to Submit a Formal Comment

Your comment can be as long or short as you'd like- it can just be one sentence! The key is to clearly STATE YOUR SUPPORT for the proposed rule. You can also look at other existing comments for support.

If you have personal experience with disability benefits, especially the reduction of benefits from free meals/groceries, those are great to include. They like to hear from people personally impacted by these changes, or know people who are.

I know it can be intimidating to post a public comment like this but it is SO IMPORTANT to engage with specific policy changes like this. Saying "this is great!" on social media doesn't help governmental officials understand the level of support a change like this has, or how much good it would do.

I need to make sure my husband's mother sees this. In 1980 she teamed up with Joe Biden to block a bill from Reagan's Secretary Of Education that would have placed disabled students in institutions forever, and she made throwing petitions on the White House lawn cool. This is something she would advocate for fiercely.

As fun as the memes are, the leak is significant because of what it exposed about the no fly list and you should know what's on it. Here is a thread of a journalist explaining some of the stuff he found

The No Fly List isn’t a laughing matter and you all need to but down your “it/she lesbian catgirl hacked the government” memes for 5 fucking seconds and see that this is a massive exposition of the US government’s deeply entrenched racism and xenophobia that rips away people’s basic human rights and presumption of innocence. Everyone KNOWS that the US has severe issues involving the treatment of Southwest Asians and muslims, issues severe enough to pillage civilians for oil and destroy entire cultural monuments and history that cannot be ignored, and yet you all choose to look the other way anyways. If you all really gave half a fuck about tearing down imperialism and colonization as you say you do, you would do the bare minimum and acknowledge that 10% of the names on there are “Muhammed”. That there are CHILDREN on this list, because their name betrayed them and is used against them to accuse them of suspected terrorism. You would point how someone just exposed the US for violating basic rights everyone should have on a massive scale, how this airline wasn’t even supposed to have this list, and you would talk about it instead of saying “holy fucking bingle!”.

We need to learn when to put down our memes and face the reality that we can no longer avoid. We cannot stand idly by while we watch one of the world’s massive, most powerful governments mark people as terrorist with almost no procedure as to who can be put on there because of someone’s race and religion. We can’t keep avoiding the legacy that 9/11′s justification of going to war has created. We can’t keep avoiding the way that elected officials, especially Trump, have openly and proudly confessed to supporting things like this. We also need to acknowledge how lucky we are that this didn’t get into the wrong person’s hands, because it very easily could have. This isn’t funny, this is vile, and by laughing and not actually caring, we’re only serving to help this continue.

Here’s something new to know about me. I’m a Murramarang woman from the south coast of New South Wales, and an Aboriginal Artist. I’m learning and trying to bring Dhurga (my native language) back to life after it was nearly destroyed during colonisation.

Here are a couple of my paintings.

The first is a Giriwa (goanna), the totem of my tribe, painted in our traditional x-ray style. This type of painting was used to illustrate and educate, to teach biology and anatomy.

The second is a warigal (dingo) painted in a more decorative style, with a fusion of our more narrative style of art and my own modern style.

If you’ve stumbled upon this post, I hope you learned something from it! I love sharing my culture ❤💛🖤

[image id: the first image, of a girawa (a large lizard), is a painting done with thick lines and vibant colors against a black, starry background. the main body of the girawa is red, with visible organs layered on top - the lungs, heart, and intestinal tract are black, the kidneys are yellow and filled in with smaller yellow circles, with a black and white striped outline. Overlaying the lungs in a highly concetrated white are the ribs. other textures in bright yellow and white indicate pockets of fat and muscle.

the second image is a warigal (dingo)’s face, painted in the center of a large medallion. it is also rendered in thick lines, but they are white and filled in with many smaller light yellow circles. the warigal’s face is made of a variety of geometric shapes, reminiscent of a patchwork quilt, and the patterns used in each shape are symmetrical and highly textured. the eyes are more realistically rendered than the rest, giving it a striking gaze. the background is a series of small concentric circles, in yellows, reds, and greens. the word “warigal” is painted in the upper left. end id.]

taylor, the artist of these pieces has a commission post up now! please click the link [ here ] if you want to check that out.

About ten years ago I decided that the next step I needed to take in my life was to accept and explore what it meant to be a failure and to have failed. This infuriated almost everybody in my life and clearly terrified a lot of people. People do not want you to accept failure. They dont want you to like... Sit with and think about it and pick it up and turn it arpund in your hands and really examine it. They want you to keep throwing yourself against the impossible walls until your body explodes! They do not want you to say "alright then, I've failed. What does that mean for me? Im still here. What does the life of someone who has failed look like?"

This makes people very angry and panicky.

My mental health improved in ways it had not in the previous DECADE once I stopped. And. Sat. With failure. And thought about what my failure ... Was. And looked at the structures that produced it and examined them critically.

It is so taboo to fail and admit it openly and talk about it. It is so taboo to talk about or think about failure in an accepting way rather than hiding it shamefully until you experience a degree of success in some area which allows you to present the past failure as "a stepping stone" to your current situation. Fuck that. We are put in positions of guaranteed failure by society every day and then punished and shamed for it. Lets fucking talk about failure

Text: PSA to anyone with a tree nut allergy who frequents starbucks. We have a new drink called the pistachio cold foam cold brew and our pistachio sauce not only has real pistachio in it, the syrup sticks inside the blender and will 100% not fully wash off with the rinsers we use (its just water). I highly suggest if you want a cold foam drink during Jan-March you request it done in a sanitized blender to lower the chance of having a reaction if you are at risk.

Our Republic are petitioning the Scottish Parliament to end legal loopholes for the Monarchy.

The former Queen and new King’s lawyers can refuse to sign off on laws unless the Scottish Government exempts the Monarchy. Basically the King can hold back progress unless the Scottish Government writes into law that the monarchy doesn't actually have to follow it.

Tonight I gave Art Spiegelman the National Book Awards Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. And we're both being banned. Some of you may think this is a good thing because you don't like my books or you don't care for Maus. But I guarantee that there are books you love on the banned lists too. That's why libraries and librarians fight for their rights to have all the books on the shelves and for your rights to read them. And it's why I support them.

Just reblogging because none of the threats to books and libraries have gone away. Mostly they've got worse. If you are capable of joining your Library Board or School Board do it...

And if you personally are unable to join your local Library Board or School Board, find the people who ARE running for those positions who support your values and SUPPORT them!!! It’s usually an elected position, and the pro-censorship crowd is pouring COUNTLESS resources into putting their people in power. It’s so important to get involved in your community, because that’s where change starts.

And if you think you're in a "blue enough area" think again.

I desperately encourage you to look at who is actually running, and also historical election data. For example, one of our school board positions was nearly filled by someone who was anti-mask, pro-censorship and was beaten out by less than 1k votes.

Look at the stuff these people say on social media. Some of my local candidates for various offices -- officially sponsored by the local republican party -- have expressed a desire to destroy public education and public libraries. Literally. Like the exact words were "get rid of libraries, they're liberal brainwashing facilities".

Don't have kids? DOESN'T MATTER. These systems support the ENTIRE COMMUNITY. The next generation will be who takes over in the positions that maintain your electrical grid, keep your water running, oversee supply chain in your local companies so things keep running. You want people who are educated. You want people to have equal access to food and shelter and dignity.

The more of a gap you have, the more space there is to be filled by hateful rhetoric that leads to violence -- yes, violence, in your backyard.

"That can't happen here" -- our area just recently faced sabotage to power substations LESS THAN FIVE MILES FROM MY HOUSE. Right down the road. During a cold snap that could've KILLED people and they know it. It can happen "here", and it will if people don't take an active stand in their communities.
