40-60 min studies of bloodborne concept art

bloodborne is something very dear to me, one of the reasons for that is the atmosphere and the way that atmosphere is cultivated.

i’ve been doing these studies for the last few days and focusing on what makes bloodborne concept art what it is. the abundance of details, black linework, strong shadows (a LOT of those), muddy colours, sharpness present even in far away objects that gives the eye nowhere to rest on - everything creates such an overwhelming feeling that reminds me of food poisoning, but somehow, Somehow an appealing kind. and i’m only talking about the technique.

So I had a few copies of YOU left over from the last print run, and I dropped them all off at local comic shops today. I’ll probably print another round soon(ish), but I’ll make sure to update the About the Author page (I’ve moved, also I almost never use this Tumblr anymore, haha).

Pokemon generated by neural network

I’ve been playing around with char-rnn, an open-source torch add-on for character-based neural networks by Andrej Karpathy, using it to generate everything from cookbook recipes to superhero names to a Lovecraft/cookbook mashup.

I decided to train the neural network to randomly generate Pokemon names and abilities based on this list as a training set - and found that it was good at generating Pokemon. Annoyingly good at it - by the time it had gone through the training set 50 times, it was already fluently plagiarizing Pokemon word for word. I had to go back to my very first snapshot of the neural network (16 times through the training set), at which point it hadn’t yet learned the entire set of names and abilities, and was still coming up with hilarious new ones.

Thought I’d give self-advertising a shot, on the off chance, since I’m thinking of relocating to Los Angeles or San Francisco (I’m okay with either; still debating) and I would definitely feel more comfortable going with a more stable job. I’ve been focusing for a role as a background painter/designer or visual development and so my portfolio is primarily 2D, but I do have experience with 3D modeling, compositing, motion graphics, and web design as well. Man though you know what makes me sorta sad is when nerdy, “quiet” kids latch on to me during camp and they just talk and talk and talk about a thing they’re into (Skyrim, Pokemon, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, dinosaurs, whatever). And I see the kids just light up when they say something and I can chime in with an ‘oh hey, are you talking about [x]? I love that thing! Tell me more about it.’

Like, their parents will warn me ‘so-and-so is pretty quiet and hard to engage’ but no, man, just listen, your kid is so smart and so into This Thing, they’ll engage like fuck and talk your damn ear off it you let them. Frame it in their damn terms. Or! Just! Listen to them about their Thing! And they will engage with the rest of the material! Because they know you care about them! Amazing!!!

Quiet kids are usually that way because either no one listens, or there is always someone more dominant speaking wise in their group that always talks over them and then they give up. Some quiet kids are starved for attention and really really want to talk, but don’t always get the chance to
