Idk if this format really carries over to Tumblr as well but i know people liked seeing them so here's the little process collage I made for Twitter ^_^
listening to Gravity Falls episode commentaries is great. Alex Hirsch nearly worked himself to death constantly. Grunkle Stan was nearly voiced by Matt Chapman of Homestar Runner. Literally nothing aside from the twist about Stan having a twin was planned more than a few episodes in advance. The zodiac wheel meant nothing and consisted of random symbols from the first 7 episodes because the intro was animated after those were done. Alex came up with the term “search for the blind eye” to be an extra bit for the between-season shorts before deciding to actually have a payoff for that setup and writing Society of the Blind Eye. Bill was meant to be a joke character and when Alex suggested that he be a real villain Michael Rianda responded “You, my friend, have lost the plot.” Bill getting one episode in the spotlight was basically chance and he only became the main villain of season 2 because he was so popular with the fans. The reveal of the portal at the end of season 1 was suggested by Mike without thinking it through and he left before the next season and the other writers were SO ANNOYED after that went through because they somehow had to keep that plot going for the 10 episodes it’d take to actually pay off. I am genuinely astonished that this show came together as well as it did at all.
By the way – this is a good time to let folks know that all of the DVD commentaries (including the “hidden” ones) are currently available in this YouTube playlist.
(They have been up on YT before, and removed. Highly recommend that folks download them off YT and save them, now that the DVD sets are out of print.)
The Owl House was cancelled
That is something you guys need to remember. This show was cancelled. There was so much content that we were supposed to get but didn't because a few Disney execs decided that their best show since Gravity Falls wasn’t good enough to keep on their platform.
You have to understand, Dana didn't want this. We were supposed to have more. We were supposed to see how Hooty and Eda met, Caleb when he was alive, Darius's mentor, the Hagside kids, Manny, more Gus centered episodes, the Bat Queen's holder, more of Raine and Eda's relationship, etc.
But because only a few Disney execs decided that this show was too gay… oh, sorry “wasn't their brand'' they cancelled it.
You absolutely have the right to be mad. But do not direct that hatred to Dana or The Owl House. Disney is your enemy.
Also: managing to get a decent ending at all given the shift from a whole third season to only three double-length episodes? That would have been really impressive. Imagine if Avatar: The Last Airbender suddenly had to cram all of the third arc into just the Sozin’s Comet episodes. Imagine what kind of insane editing and writing chops it’d take to make that work. Or hell, look at Steven Universe, which got cut down in a similar way and kinda failed to stick the landing.*
But The Owl House didn’t just manage to barely scrape by.They knocked that ending out of the fucking park. It tied up pretty much every important arc and theme, showcased incredible ends to the arcs of our protagonists, and had a giant gay blowout that left most fans feeling incredibly satisfied.
Can I imagine other places they could have gone? Sure! I would have preferred a full third season too. At the same time, though, do I feel like there were any crucial threads that were either left hanging or hastily and unsatisfyingly resolved? I genuinely can’t think of any.
Season 3 of The Owl House should be held up as proof that the creative team behind that show is made up of absolute powerhouses. Absolutely incredible stuff. Good on them for demanding their finale, and good on them for absolutely delivering.
*I like Steven Universe a lot, but the ending was cut down and it definitely shows. The last few episodes in particular just... don't really work for me. I still wouldn't really pitch this as a critique towards the creators, though; dealing with suddenly having way less time to tell your story is really fucking hard; doubly so when the reason is that your producers are geriatric homophobic rich fuckwads.
Spent an hour of my day just sitting together with my sisters and my mum showing each other gomens edits. Both sad ones and thirst traps. Family bonding time.
My mum also has fanart of aziracrow kissing on her phone home screen. And today she said sometimes she just stares at it longingly. Shes in her 3rd rewatch of s2 as well.
