I have an end-of-life patient to whom I spoke today. She burst out laughing and said, "It was all such fun. I just had so much fun." I wish this for everyone. I wish that we each would meet death laughing, with little regret and even less fear.

It makes me smile every time I see someone reblog this post with commentary about how it made them happy or changed how they look at life and death. This little old lady had no idea how much warmth and comfort she brought to thousands.

Not voting for the left because they're not Left Enough also does not make the party go more left. It makes them go more right. Because that's where the votes are.

Reblogging because for the love of Christ, I wish the “I’m not going to vote for Biden because he’s not pure/ far left/ whatever enough for me” crowd would remember what, EXACTLY, it would mean for there to be a second Trump presidency.

Assuming that any checks currently in place would stop someone who’s mindset is “I’m perfect and DESERVE to be president” from turning our country into the closest approximation of Russia he can get, is not only naive, it’s dangerously, determinedly ignorant.

I said this in 2016 and I said it in 2020 and I'll say it again:

If you don't like the fact that the leftmost candidate of the two major parties isn't left enough, the solution is neither to refuse to vote, nor to "send a message" by voting third party. Both result in an advantage to the rightmost candidate.

The solution is, vote for the guy that's not quite good enough, and then lean on him hard.

Biden has moved farther to the left than any president since Roosevelt. Yes. He's gotten more of our agenda done than Clinton or Obama. And there's many things he's tried to do that the right wingers in Congress or in the Supreme Court have stopped him from doing. He's also moved farther to the left than any president I know of when you look at his whole career; at one point he was Liberal Lite, "moderate", pro-corporation, etc... and it seems he learned from it. He changed. So we're dealing with a guy who is capable of moving left, has done so, and could be asked to go farther.

The other candidate literally wants to become a dictator, eliminate freedom of the press, and spend our tax dollars persecuting his "enemies."

Do I like the fact that Biden is supporting Israel militarily when they have caused such an enormous and horrible death toll in Gaza? No. But we have treaties with Israel and we can't easily break them. Meanwhile we have actually seen him call Netanyahu out. Including saying basically "You keep this up and no one will be your friend", implying that he is threatening to withdraw support. Trump, meanwhile, is cheerfully Islamophobic and would happily murder every single Palestinian. You care about Palestine, there is only one legitimate choice. I'm sorry, I know you want to believe there are multiple moral options you can take, but there is really only one. In the US's winner-take-all first-past-the-post no ranked choice system, the guy who gets 51% of the vote and the guy who gets 90% of the vote are exactly the same.

Look, we can win this. The right's abortion bans are wildly unpopular; many people will be voting to try to restore the right to control our own bodies. Republican support skews older, but in four years millennials didn't magically reach a point of comfortable status quo where they're likely to start voting Republican; instead Republicans have doubled down on the crazy. Anti-maskers and ant-vaxxers, who are likely Republicans, are much more likely to have died of COVID than the reality-based community on the left, since Biden won by 7 million votes 4 years ago.

But Trump will do everything in his power to cheat. We can't just win by 51%. We have to trounce him and as many Republicans at the ballot box as we can, because they have lost the plot. Even the best ones refuse to do anything to stop the spread of this evil-for-its-own-sake movement that wants queers, Jews, and Muslims dead, POC subservient, and women of all races securely under the thumb of men. We have to stop this movement by sending a message to politicians, "these are not winning ideologies. Embrace these ideologies because of the fanatic fringe, and you will lose." Most of them aren't true believers; they're pandering. The only way to stop the Republicans being pointlessly destructive is to make so many of them lose, the rest realize, shit, the grownups are back, we better start acting like politicians and not demagogues again.

And one of the best ways to do that is to make sure Biden wins by such a large margin even Trump can't cheat his way to victory. Because he's ready. He's promised, there will be violence if he loses. (There will also be violence if he wins, but it will be state violence against us. If he loses, there will be rioting white thugs in red states, but the federal government will still have both the power and the will to try to stop that.) He's going to pull every dirty trick in the book to win. The only way to stop him is to win overwhelmingly. Then we get four more years of relative safety, where if Clarence Thomas dies or gets arrested we get a young liberal judge in his place, and in that time, we can push the Democratic party farther to the left, because they'll know why they won. They'll know who voted for them, and why, and they'll move in that direction because they want to keep winning.

You cannot save Gaza by making sure Biden loses. That is actually the worst possible thing that could happen, in terms of anything any American could do. Netanyahu wants Trump to win because Trump will back him up no matter what he does to the Palestinians.

Voting is not about proving how moral you are and selecting the perfect candidate. Voting is about getting the best possible candidate out of what is usually a lackluster selection. But this time, the choice is, an old guy who's not as charismatic and shiny as we'd like and hasn't done as much as we want, vs, literally, a wanna be dictator with an agenda that's pure evil.

I'm in awe of how we ran historical revisionism on the civil rights movement so bad that people truly believe it was quiet self-sacrifcial non-disruptive christ-like activism that forced progress and not — like — the incredible economic pressure of boycotts and outbreaks of illegal civil disobedience

Yapping to the choir but eughhh it burns me up girl effective protests have to be loud and inconvenient for change to happen because silent cries die in the dark that's the entire pointtt

Also, a lot of the so called harmless examples used for peaceful protests were specifically supposed to be disruptive as all hell. Like, take sit-ins, for example. What you were probably told is that black people just refused to leave white only establishments to make a point.

But how they actually worked was manipulating racist policies to cause as much of a delay as possible. They'd sit down at the bar to order (that's how those restaurants worked, you had to sit down to order and there weren't many tables) and when the waiter said they couldn't serve them, they'd respond that they would wait until they could be served. And then all their friends who they organized this with would do the same, and they would sit there at every seat until they're holding up the whole line. Then nobody could order and the restaurant was forced to either close, serve them, or try and fail to work around them. It wasn't just to make a point, it was to cost them money and time.

Even what was framed as "quiet peaceful protest" was actually very disruptive both socially and economically.

Does this look quiet, peaceful, nondisruptive?

And the struggle didn't stop after formal integration, once the Civil Rights act had passed. Because even when they are legally required to serve you, they can make you really fucking uncomfortable and threaten you and the cops probably will take their side.

For one example, there was a cafe that would serve Black people, but would then publicly break the dishes so that no white customer would ever have to eat off a dish a Black person had eaten off of. This was done publicly, right as the Black diner was done eating. The waitress takes the plate and smashes it. This is a signal both to the white diners "see, we hate them just as much as you do, you're safe here" and also a threat of violence to the Black diners. "If you're not careful we'll smash you just like we did this plate."

But at the same time, if Black people go there and eat every day ... how long before the cafe can't afford to do that? How long before they have broken so many dishes that it's eating into their profits? How long before the white diners start getting used to eating alongside Black people and simply don't care as much any longer, or start getting annoyed at the noise and fuss and mess?

Black people eating in white establishments was loud, inconvenient, and disruptive. Because that's the nature of challenging the status quo.

I think there are several very good options, but for those arguing Carrot and Angua I want to point out that Angua would be the Frodo and Carrot would be Sam. like they’d still get that thing in the volcano for sure but I want to be clear about the dynamic

The Luggage and Rincewind: I'm suspicious of the Luggage. Sure, it'd be able to protect the ring all the way there... but I feel like it might also be tempted very fast. On the other hand, Rincewind has the most experience with potentially world- ending magic of anyone, so it might be fine? Verdict: Good luck getting them to volunteer

The Librarian: I think this is the Tom Bombadil option. Probably wouldn't be swayed by the Ring... but you couldn't pull him out of his library long enough to make the trip. More likely to store it in the depths of the archives until it gets lost or snares a grad student. Verdict: inadvisable

Moist von Lipwig: now I haven't actually read these books yet (i know, i know. I'm saving them) but I feel like Moist is a charisma- based character that wouldn't do well on a long endurance trek. Verdict: last resort

Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg: the trick here is getting Granny to accept responsibility for the Ring. She'd try to resist on the same grounds as Gandalf. I think if you did get her to accept she'd be fine — her ironclad sense of self would overpower the Ring. But even safer: make Magrat the Ringbearer. That's basically Witches Abroad anyway. Verdict: solid choice, my personal favorite

Maurice and the rats: this was my very first Pratchett book ever. I have a soft spot for it but I cannot remember anything specific for the life of me. Instinct says put them in Merry or Pippin's role instead. Verdict: I need to reread and see what these guys are up to

Vimes: the Boromir option. High likelihood of trying to fix the world despite the cost (eg Night Watch). Would probably pull himself back from the brink before doing anything really bad, but.... Verdict: he should delegate this

Dorfl: interesting. I think he'd treat the Ring as a minor God and spend the whole trip debating with it about its existence. Most likely highly resistant to external influence. I'd trust him. Verdict: most likely to give the Ring an existential crisis

Carrot and Angua: the above poster is correct. However, this pairing has a higher likelihood than Sam and Frodo of ending by Carrot pushing Angua in to the lava when she falls to temptation at the end. Verdict: let's hope Nobby is around to take the fall for her. RIP.

Cheery Littlebottom: really, all on her own? No buddies? Let her stay in the lab. :( or at least send Detritus along for backup! I'd trust her with the Ring... but I think she'll get sidetracked and end up in Rohan discussing gender roles with Eowyn. Verdict: plausible but not my first pick.

The Nac Mac Feegles: look. This is the even more chaotic version of giving the Ring to the eagles or the ents. I think they'd get it done but I also think Middle Disk would never be the same. I don't know if the Ring would be in the same shape by the time it got to the mountain. They'd fight Shelob and get distracted looking for more spiders or spinning up clothes from the silk. A delegation would be sent to punch Sauron in the eye "as a distraction" and they'd brag like this was the height of subtlety. One of them tried wearing the Ring as a belt and they all got very confused trying to figure out where he was. Verdict: they'd get it done but I'm not sure it's worth the devastation the rest of the world would suffer while waiting for it.
