Dumpster diving tip: What to do with more than you need

Well I’m at it again. From one dumpster diving haul from a single pet store I will be able to feed 4 dogs for a month.

Pictured above is 2 dog food containers, each with about 60 pounds of kibble, and another bag of dog food at 30 pounds. Yes, out of 1 haul I got 150 pounds of perfectly edible dog food. This waste is inherent to capitalism, especially the late capitalism we’re living in now, and even in the middle of a pandemic.

For 4 years now I have been feeding my dog for free, not just with freegan kibble but with meat, eggs, and veggies saved from being thrown away from households, restaurants, and retailers.

But more often than not I come across way more food than I need, and it’s not always shelf stable kibble. So what now? Take a portion and leave the rest to rot? Well, you don’t have to!

If you find yourself with the time and enthusiasm, a dumpster full of perfectly good potatoes can quickly become an empty dumpster, but how do you disperse this much food? First, try to find a Buy Nothing Project near you, see if your city has a free store, a food rescue project, or if you need to get your precious perishables to a fridge ASAP, donate to the closest homeless shelter (they’re usually open 24/7, but make sure to call ahead first). But if it can wait, food banks do take “expired” food, and are always in dire need of bulk donations.

Whichever method you choose, always make it a point to connect with people, dive and donate regularly if you can, and most importantly, get organized. Because when you donate what you don’t need, you’re taking direct action, and you are more powerful together.

I lied, that food lasted for months. And then we refilled the containers again, from one haul ( from a dumpster 1-6 days full of kibble [just one pet store throws away enough kibble to feed 4 large dogs for 2 months every 1-6 days, think about that).

This is why you organize. This is why you share your enthusiasm and ask around. You never know who used to sew and had heaps of sewing supplies, power tools, gardening stuff, etc.! When the right people know what you’re about, you will naturally form community and share what you can give. Whether that be skills , goods, or a helping hand.

Now more than ever, we need each other, and you can make a difference. Whether that’s by feeding dogs, feeding your household, or feeding others.

Put yourself in situations where your have more than you need and distribute.

Direct action works. Organize.

My battle jacket:)

And a little explanation:D

the front:

on the collar i have rows of spikes, cause “they won’t do any damage to people there” on my left pocket is an anarchy symbol with small spikes at the points on the A. On the right pocket is a trans patch that says they/them/theirs. I have a bunch of pins i’ve collected over the years on the main area of the jacket. Safety pin chains are attached to the top of both pockets also. I have cobweb chains on the left shoulder and right waist. On the left waist i have a pantera “vulgar display of power” patch, one of the mascot of the twitch streamer hutts, Tim saying “crime” a patch that says “Korn” and a trans flag. On the collar is a tab with four safety pins holding it in place, looking similar to a bug on one side, on the other are two pins.

the back: i have patches that say: Eat the rich, Rammstein, Compost in training, do not disturb, proud to be a freak and rat king, i also have a deaths head moth patch below the collar. On the collar is a small anarchy sumbol. I am Currently making more patches to add.

arms/cuffs: on the left arm i have two patches, saying “go weird or go home” and “acab” and on both cuffs i have sewed on rows of soda can tabs with a large spike near the button on the cuffs, but a few tabs have fallen off.

I see a lot of people making crustpants with skinny jeans, and i want to make my own pants, but are skinny jeans a requirement? They're extremely bad for me, texture wise

U dont gotta use skinny jeans.

my main pro personally for skinny jeans makes it so the patches arent wrinkled when you wear the pants. As pants with more fabric change when ur wearing them a lot more compared to sewing them and wearing them.

so if u want to add patches to smth baggier, try wearing the patches out only safety pinned on first to see how the wrinkles in the fabric affect the legibility of the fabric. Like the knee is a spot where wrinkles form so patches don't do well there if its words. Thats a big problem on my pink patch pants i find.

skinny jeans are easier due to no wrinkles but they are not the only way.

i’m sure i’ve said this before but punk clothes *should not* be expensive. if you are buying expensive “punk” clothes for the aesthetic, you aren’t punk. the point of punk was and is to reject commercialism and the exploitation of youth by corporations and governments. you know why leather jackets are a staple of punk fashion? bc leather jackets were abundant in thrift stores after greaser culture ended in the late 60s or so. black hair dye was cheapest at the time, so a lot of punks had black hair. the patches? meant to be diy. expensive “punk” style clothes go against punk culture on a fundamental level.

my current battle jacket is from a plus size consignment store, and i *only* bought it from there because it was the first jacket across multiple stores that was in my size. when my favourite the clash t-shirt didn’t fit me anymore, i cut out the logo and made it a patch to put on a shirt that did fit me. most of the patches on my jacket and backpack are handpainted or embroidered by me.

the only reason punk clothes should be at all mildly expensive is if you’re buying from a small business. the patches and pins i dont make myself i buy from small businesses off etsy. even then there are shops like retirementfund that do $1 screenprinted patches. VoodooLuxe and LovelyAlternative both have handmade riot grrrl pins for $1.50 each. this isn’t sponsored or whatever, i’m just saying that there are so many better places to find punk clothes and accessories.

punk isn’t just an aesthetic. punk culture is diy for a reason.

WASH YOUR DIY CLOTHES

PLEASE PEOPLE! THEY GET NASTY!

I washed some shorts that I diy’ed today, here’s how I did it.

  1. Put them with some laundry detergent and cold water. You don’t need a buncha detergent, just a lil, and the water can be warm if you want, but cold or cool is best. I don’t have a bathtub so I used a storage bin. Swish them around with ur hands for a little while.

2. Then u gotta rinse them out, use as little water as possible cuz saving the planet, but also don’t leave soap in them.

3. Usually gotta rinse them twice

Usually gotta rinse them twice

Let ‘em air dry. Sometimes I put hang them up and blow a fan on them.

And there ya go, clean diy punk clothes!

got any ideas for subtler patches to add to my jacket? conservative parents suck :/

I completely understand anon. I think the best bet here would be band patches, especially if your parents know a lot of punk symbols. Heres what I got, but of course other suggestions are welcome! (A variety of really subtle to only kinda subtle)

  • Band patches - especially bands with beliefs and songs that align with your beliefs
  • If you are straight edge - literally any of the straight edge symbols (XXX / SXE / X)
  • Variations of ACAB - 1312 / 13-12 / use Acronyms (a common substitution is All Cats Are Beautiful)
  • Safety Pins
  • For queer folks out there - patches with queer colors
  • Write out stuff in a font like windings if you want to - no ones gonna take the time to translate it, but it would be a conversation piece for sure
  • QR code that leads to your choice of song or website - preferably punk related
  • Quotes that align with punk views but are not necessarily only applied to the punk subculture
“I was not made to be subtle” (the irony I know)
“Don’t mistake kindness for weakness”
“If you want to achieve greatness, stop asking for permission”
“In a society that profits from your self doubts, liking yourself is a rebellious act”

do you have any tips for being punk at school? I only know if one other punk at my school and ts relatively accepting but kids are still assholes.

From the use of ‘kids’ I’m going to assume you are referring to being punk in high school.

I’ll be honest, I wasnt really punk when I was in high school. I grew up redneck and was a country kid at heart. That being said, I do have two tips for you

  1. Stick to your values. I cant stress that enough. High school is filled with peer pressure and social competitions. Those are unavoidable, but don’t let any of that compromise your values and what you believe in.
  2. Be authentically yourself. Thats a whole part of being punk. If you dont or cant dress the part is besides the point. You are young, enjoy it and stop worrying about what others think of you. You’ve only got one life to live, why spend time worrying about what other people think of you? If they dont like it, thats their problem. Pay the haters no mind, cause when it comes down to it, they are just assholes that dont know how to enjoy their lives and decided to take their insecurities out on other people.

From a long-time goth: studsandspikes dot com is where most alt people I know get their spikes, but I have seen rumors recently that they’ve sold stuff like iron crosses so if people want to avoid them that’s understandable. Other than that I generally use ebay for my spikes, can buy a pack of 10/50/100 etc for relatively cheap. You can also scour thrift stores for those cheap plastic stud belts (the kind you can find new at Hot Topic), turn them over to make sure the studs are the kind with posts and not just shitty glue-on ones, take the belts home, and rip the studs off with pliers.

That is precisely why I just didnt mention studs and spikes .com, I didnt want to invite any drama over it, cause I’ve also heard that they’ve been selling some not great dogwhistles.

But thank you for all the info!! I never thought of the belt thing
