I was thinking recently about how "alt" subcultures are so aestheticized now but they used to be much more about your societal views than the clothes you wore or even the bands you listened to, and my brain connected some dots. Idk if this is anything

Yes, this is it! This is exactly it!!

i enjoy that every single human’s reaction to penguin is unrestrained delight

And penguins lack large terrestrial predators, so their reaction to humans tends to be, “HELLO STRANGE GIANT PENGUINS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DO YOU HAVE ANY FISH?”

being poor is traumatic. even if you’re not homeless or starving. never being able to get anything nice for yourself, never being able to go out to eat without feeling guilty, never being able to do anything fun that isn’t free, making you housebound in bad weather because you can’t afford to go to a cafe or a movie. it takes a toll. being poor under capitalism makes your life a waking nightmare. this post must be reblogged by everyone.

Addendum: If perchance you do scrape up the money to do something (say buy a computer or phone because you absolutely need the damn thing for work), you get shamed for doing so. “Why did you buy that expensive phone if you are poor?” I spent 20 dollars on it …. “What about that nice computer you got there?” I bought it six years ago, refurbished for about $250. “How about that big ole television you got there?” etc, etc, etc. No matter how poor you are, so many people think you should have less if you are “actually” poor.

There’s no two ways about it: poverty is violence.

Also, even if you get out of poverty, the scars remain in the way you handle your money, your carefulness, your frugality, your constant waiting for the day when it all gets taken away again. You need to have back-ups, contingencies, savings, even at the cost of being kind to yourself and treating yourself in the here and now.

Everyone outside of USA:

US First responder here, Just some info for folks, you only get billed if a private ambulance company or a fire department transports. The medical service provided by your local fire department or FD/municipal paramedic is free. Call us when something goes wrong, We will show up and evaluate you/provide care (stop the bleeding, splint the injury, administer epinephrine) free of charge, And then you can have a friend or uber transport you to the hospital (or sign AMA and just stay home if you don’t want to go to the hospital either.)

Also, in a large number of counties, there are public paramedics paid for by the taxpayers, so ALS transport is free. I’d advise researching your local system.

Please don’t avoid calling 911 for a medical emergency because you’re afraid of bills, you have the right to refuse transport which is where the bills occur.

I have to repeat, you will NOT be billed for medical services provided on scene by the fire department/paramedics, And you have the RIGHT to refuse transport even if not going to the hospital will kill you.

I will always reblog

Had to take a bunch of CPR and first aid classes for my job in college. This is what the paramedics who taught us told us every class. Always call the fire department first because they’ll help you but won’t change you thousands of dollars because we pay for them through our taxes.

At the annual Houston RenFest we’d always get one or two furries that walk around and every time the general reaction from the medieval roleplayers is akin to  “BEASTS? BEASTS THAT WALK LIKE MAN? FOUL!”

Last time I went a furry volunteered for an impromptu conversion/exorcism and a guy dressed as a monk gathered a bunch of people and using a Gatorade bottle performed an entire catholic christening while reading off the instructions on his Ipad. When the furry was fully “converted” he removed the head of his costume and everyone in the crowd pretended to freak out and say shit like “GlORY BE HE IS SAVED” “CHRIST HAS BROKEN HIS CURSE”

That’s the best crap i’ve heard in months

I almost reblogged a PSA about not attacking scare actors at haunted houses and hayrides, some of whom are under age. It was a mostly good post, pointing out how dickish it is to hurt people because you think it’s funny.

But op lost me when they started talking softly to the people who do this without meaning to, suggesting that they take precautions like wearing crocs so it hurts less when you kick or keeping your hands in you pockets so you’d be less likely to hit. Giving your phone to a friend so you don’t clock someone with it.

But… my friends. If you’ve ever done this before – like hitting someone for scaring you in a situation you know is simulated because you paid to be let in – maybe the answer isn’t “wear soft shoes”.

Maybe don’t go in the first place.

I know, it’s spooky season and you like to be festive, but if the price of your holiday fun is that you’ll lose control of your actions and probably assault someone, you don’t any need tips and tricks other than “don’t pay people to scare you.” It’s a terrible thing to do to someone and they don’t deserve it.

Also, I guarantee you they aren’t being paid enough.

I wish everyone would admit that classic literature is inherently difficult to read, and that you shouldn’t feel stupid if you don’t “get it”. Especially the dark academia/ classic lit fandoms and stuff. Like unless you have the vocabulary and pop culture knowledge of an 18th century nobleman, it’s going to be a tough read. It’ll take you longer to read; you’re not stupid if you’ve spent several months on a single book! And you don’t have to enjoy everything. It’s okay if you got bored after one chapter of Wuthering Heights, and couldn’t be bothered to read the rest. It’s okay if you want to read your favourite kids book for the 10th time instead. You’re not stupid. No piece of literature is inherently better, more “important”, more “meaningful”, or more “intellectual” than another. First and foremost, read what brings you joy.

literally who CARES if straight cis men are wearing skirts for ‘clout’!!! I want to live in a world where being gnc is desirable to them rather than one where they make bigoted jokes about it. it’s GOOD that people with the privilege to do so are normalising gender non conformity and i dont give a shit if they have deliberate political intentions or if they’re just having fun you guys are all so annoying

we could be using the tiktok boys to kickstart a movement around men wearing skirts that would benefit gnc and trans people but you guys want ideological purity before u want results

When I was in middle school, way back in 1994, we had An Incident. A few popular boys dared each other to wear skirts to school on Monday. To, in their own words, “See what it was like to wear skirts, lol. Why shouldn’t we?”. It wasn’t anything fancy, they just pulled some long hippie skirts over their jeans in the bathroom and giggled their way to class.

I want to go back a bit here. It was 1994. There were no out gay people anywhere near our school. Certainly no trans people. A few celebrities on TV, sure, but mostly in jokes. And not everyone had access to MTV or cable. The internet didn’t exist for us. Only a few kids had ever even heard of Rocky Horror Picture Show, which would be my first brush with gender fuckery that came close to positive rep in the media. Our city and state had a measure on the ballot almost every year since the mid eighties attempting to criminalize even mentioning the word gay. AIDs was still a looming specter over everything. It was dangerous to be seen as gay or gender nonconforming.

So these boys. They weren’t trying to make a statement. They weren’t even making a gay joke. They just thought it wold be silly to wear skirts. They wanted to see what it felt like. They were experimenting. The teachers flipped out. The boys wear marched into the principle’s office, their parents called, they were sent home for the day, a school announcement was made about inappropriate clothing and being lewd in school. Again, long loose skirts over pants. “Skirts aren’t for you. It’s wrong for boys to wear skirts. Stay in your straight boy box”. In response we, the students, responded with “Fuck the police!”.

2 Days later about 2/3 of boys showed up in skirts, jewelry, and makeup. No girls wore skirts, makeup, or jewelry. Some girls drew mustaches and wore suits. It began as just a anti-authoritarian response to what we saw as a ridiculous over reaction to boys in skirts, but the more we thought about it the more upset we got. Why couldn’t they wear skirts any time they wanted??? Why shouldn’t they paint their nails??? What if they did it all the time??? Yeah maybe some of them did like other boys, so what??? Maybe some of the girls in school never wanted to wear skirts or makeup, didn’t like their boobs, and/or didn’t like boys??? MAYBE IT WAS ALL BULLSHIT

In about a week a large number of us had become queer advocates without even knowing what that was. And in the face of that many kids, the school didn’t know what to do. Send us all home? We had several days of no free periods allowed, no recess time, lunch was for eating and quiet contemplation. Parents were called and warnings mailed that school dress codes were being updated. Unfortunately for school policy enough parents also thought that enforcing the gender binary was ridiculous that meetings had to be held. And some of the wealthier parents rolled up with lawyers ready to argue that Timmy had every right to wear a long skirt, and you couldn’t suspend Alice because she’d buzzed her hair on Thursday and started wearing mens suit pants and jackets. So it was dropped mostly. Skirts couldn’t be above the knee, no spaghetti straps, no drawing on your face - regardless of gender. But the air had changed.

Most kids went back to wearing whatever they had before. But, several boys continued painting their nails, grew out their hair, and occasionally wore skirts. Several girls chopped their hair off and wore “boys” clothing. One person, and this was literally unheard of, asked their friends to stop calling them Bridgett and call them Brandon. And they did. I lost track of most of the students, this town isn’t that small, but I know some of them came out as queer later in life. I can’t say that incident was a turning point for them, but it was for me.

It started as boys being silly. But at least 2 of those initial boys ended up wearing skirts and makeup regularly after that well into high school, and not as a joke. If they’d been shouted down? If other kids hadn’t said, “You know what? Good for you!” I hope they still would have been able to come out, but it probably wouldn’t have been as easy.

And yes, it did start as a joke. But the response is what matters here. It wasn’t treated as a joke. It was met with anger. Then acceptance. And it made a positive difference.

So, I see people upset that “straight cis” people aren’t wearing clothes correctly and… Y'all. I just see another instance of some kids playing with ideas and experimenting, pushing the boundaries. And being met with anger. And told to get back in their gender appropriate box.

“Well well well what if they mean it as a joke???” Tell them they look good and should wear skirts more often, if they want to. Tell them that yellow isn’t their color, but they’d look great in green. Tell them that if they get thigh chaffing to try bike shorts underneath. If you can’t handle that, don’t say anything. Block them and move on. If they’re assholes, block them and move on. But don’t tell them they can’t wear clothing because they haven’t labeled themselves correctly.

You can’t say you support queer rights and gender nonconformity and then get pissy when people don’t wear pants/skirts in narrow ways you like.

Stop trying to validate yourself by pushing down other people.

(I’m using pronouns for people that were used when I last knew them, since I have no way of knowing if they’ve changed)

EDIT: I do know this situation is specific. It wouldn’t have happened the same at some of the other schools in town. Families trended more liberal, and the popular kids were mostly wealthier. So, we all had adults saying, “gays aren’t evil but also not encouraged, but you can’t say you don’t encourage them”. The parental support was mostly of a “don’t tell my kid what to do” liberal posturing. Very few of the parents actually supported their kid being queer at the time. Brandon changing their name was a secret. We, the students radicalized ourselves on accident, but no one actually came out until years later. Our supporting each other to wear whatever we wanted, joke or not, was influential in coming out though. (my parents basically asked if I wanted to buy a suit to wear to school, also did I want to form a picket line. I did not, but appreciated the idea. Mom told one of the boys he looked very pretty when he wore a dress to graduation. Which was another Incident, and also very funny because they couldn’t punish him at all by then)

It’s probably clear by now I’m obsessed with platonic Moreid but…look. Their friendship is genius because it mirrors, in the exact opposite way, Reid’s relationship with his childhood bullies. Morgan is older, tougher, universally liked and respected—not to mention the pranks and teasing. When he first met him, Reid (canonically) thought he was just another jock.

And then what does Morgan do? He ruffles Reid’s hair. He listens to his problems. He calls him “pretty boy” (which has to build his confidence every time he hears it, because people have made fun of him for a lot of things but never for being pretty). The first time Reid is in a serious relationship, Morgan doesn’t make a joke about her being out of his league; he says, “She’s gotta be one hell of a woman to keep up with you.” He teaches him how to play baseball. He takes him seriously—as an agent, as a man, and as a person—because I think he decided, the first time when he made the “wet rat” comment and saw the look on Reid’s face, who he was going to be to him: bully, or brother.

And he does it with other people, too. He makes the cute, slightly geeky and deceptively sensitive technical analyst feel sexy; he refuses to take his boss’s job because his loyalty has always been more important than his ambition; and instead of flirting with the newest dark-haired female addition to the unit in his usual shallow, no-attachments sort of way, he becomes her closest friend and finds it in himself to trust her, over and over again. He defies every expectation in every relationship, because he is never going to become the boys who tormented him growing up, the men his sister fell victim to, or the agents he watched destroy themselves as he rose through the ranks of the Bureau.

Not to mention the fact that, however much he loved his father, he clearly decided he was never going to put his wife and child in a position to lose him.

Morgan is a freaking awesome character and I was really, truly sad to see him leave.
