can i jsut say… isnt it insane that polar bears go underground like imagine just walking along with a shovel and u start digging a hole and a bear is in there

I know it‘s supposed to be scary that there is apex predators just potentially sleeping under the surface of the snow like some kind of greek mythology monster but it just makes me laugh bc them living in holes just means polar bears just have little houses and look out of their little windows like:

“New Zealand’s government wants the Maori language to be taught in all primary schools alongside maths and science, with the prime minister saying she wants to be one of the last generation that wasn’t taught. Maui fished the North Island (Te Ika-a-Maui) out of the ocean; the other half of the country, the South Island, is his waka/boat (Te Waka a Maui)

In the South Island the story is that the South Island is not Te Waka o Māui but Te Waka o Aoraki, Aoraki being the god who turned to stone after his waka capsized and is now known as Aoraki Mt Cook.

Ooh thank you for that info - I obviously have a very pro-fish-and-waka bias, having been born on the big fishy. 

The podcast ‘Taringa’ actually just did a telling of the Maui fishes up the North Island myth, iirc they mentioned in the discussion that the waka has a different origin story for some Iwi.
