how long did you spend on this? just approximately. i’ve done crochet before but not a shawl

forgot to ask as well: how many skeins did this take? do you remember what brand you used? i’m going to assume it’s polyester

Created across approximately two seasons of Person of Interest or similar. Presuming a 23 episode seasons at 40 minutes per episode, 920 minutes /60 mins per hour is a little over 15 hours. Roughly.

I used less than a full cone of yarn, but made this with a weaving yarn from Webs aka the yarn store that smartly managed to snag the url yarn.com two decades ago and also happens to be in my home state.

It’s a 50% merino wool 50% tencel yarn that, alas, is no longer (or at least not currently, not sure if it is discontinued) available in this color (elderberry). The yarn is laceweight, and has a nice combination of the sheen of silk (yay tencel) and the warmth and lightness of the merino.

I reblogged this fairly early - totally didn't see the panties because I was distracted by the stitch. What did you do to create the raised texture?

Oh oh oh yay, I am so excited you asked!!!!

The raised texture was done by creating the lower rows (repeating DCs with increases) then doing the rows that are the raised bits (repeats of sc with several chains). The next row is TCs that Back Post (or Front Post, it alternates by repeat) down to the DC row, leaving that sc-ch row free to be rising and textural above the surface.

IIRC it was a free pattern, I can dig it up if you like.

I forgot about baby Jice! Made a second smaller one that my brother could realistically use in his apartment without annoying his downstairs neighbors

So the infinite berry roving is shaping up nicely! I've blended it half and half with a white merino/silk roving I had around, made rolags, and turned those into a three-ply fingering yarn. It's very pleasantly heathered now, and knits up really beautiful. It's super springy and elastic, and I was surprised how matte it came out, despite having a fair amount of silk in it. I can absolutely imagine a cropped sweater in simple stockinette from this yarn.

Now, the next step: eliminate the "berry' aspect of it. I'll overdye a sample of the finished three-ply, and a sample of the pure berry roving, to see how that will mix with white, and which version will look better.

Berry roving update: Not so berry anymore, are we?

Featuring: pure berry roving overdyed in bluish purple - test yarn of blended berry roving / white merino/silk overdyed in bluish purple.

The berry roving didn't take the dye fully because the dark berry parts are already fully saturated with color. But the lighter parts and the white bits took the purple dye very enthusiastically!

And because the test yarn is 50% white merino/silk, it went way more purple overall than the pure berry roving. I really like how it came out, it's a really intense jewel tone, with only a few hints of a deeper, warm berry. A colour I would certainly wear!

And just for science, I've turned the overdyed bit of berry roving into a rolag (50% overdyed berry, 50% white merino/silk), and turned it into the same three-ply yarn. It has true barberpole stripes, and knits up accordingly. Because there's very clear parts of white / purple / unchanged berry visible, it looks more warmer and berry-er than the fully overdyed yarn.

They make a satisfying little array of swatches.

Guess I'm going to make a metric fuckton of rolags now, spin them all up, and then throw the finished yarn into the dye pot again! Check back again in about 63 years!

So I'm trying to make folk linen pants from sowing to sewing.

Second post (here's first)

It's been about 60 days since sowing (it's 22nd of June). It's looking so pretty and started blooming about 55th day. I've been watering it one or two wheelbarrows of every 2 weeks, which I thought would be too little but it's growing pretty good. It's still not that high (about over the knee) and I doubt it'll get much higher sadly. That means lower grade of fibers but whatever. It'll be fine.

Every now and again there are parts laying down and I've been seeing some hares running about so they probably hide in it tramping down the plants. But it gets up no problem so all good. Maybe next time I'll put up a little fence around it.

Also idk when should I harvest it bc all the info is about oil flax, not textile flax, and even then it's contradictory sometimes. But either way it's around 100-120th day, so we're still only halfway.

Next up I need to start thinking about scuthing it, and it requires some equipment. But it's easy enough to build on my own probably. It should be something like this flax-brake:

And then this kind of metal comb, which I'll make just by densly putting nails in a blank:

So yeah, that's the plans for the near future. Here's a bonus flax video if you stayed till the end ❤️
