Colin Burke

Colin Burke’s striking knitwear designs and re-interpretation of traditional textiles and techniques have put him in the spotlight since 2016, when he won Student Designer of the Year at the Irish Fashion Innovation Awards.

Originally from Galway, Colin joined NCAD as a painter, only turning to knitwear and crochet after experiencing a short course on fashion in 2013. Heavily influenced by his grandmother – a fashion buyer, and daughter of an Aran knitter, who ‘educated his eye’ – and inspired by designers who push the boundaries in print and textile, Colin’s unique hand-made crochet and knitwear creations express Aran motifs in bold colours. They can take up to 50 hours to make, often using his own stitches to construct rich patterns on modern silhouettes, frequently with trumpet sleeves. I really love his patterns and stitch work. The detail in his knitting is so incredible.
