“Here lies Sally Martin, the wife. That’s what it should say, her grave, instead of the clean slate she gets in death. That’s all she ever wanted to be, right? Of all of these things, Anna, this I cannot forgive: that Sally was complicit in her reduction of herself. The way her mother was. The way my mother was. An endless line of women making the wrong choices, always for men. In this way even my own birth is a betrayal.”

“The kingdom under the ground is a fractional place, a liminal place, a fictional place, a territory devised and ruled by its own mythologies. Its citizens are coalescences, the way a person coalesces in their memory - impressed and compacted into the quintessence of themselves. A thing with wings, a thing with teeth, a gust of laughter, a bundle of twigs. This is a nation haunted by its fictions, just as it is reliant on them (for what do we eat, if not history? What feeds our engines, if not fairy tales? What keeps the fires of us burning, if not the stories we tell ourselves?).”

Aimsey stays on the island, embraces purgatory. Years later they are in sync. They know the ticking of the gears, the eb and flow of the disasters like their own heart beat. They become a part of the island and in turn the island becomes a little bit more like them. Violent, loving, whirling things willing to be burned if means the light touched them for even a second.
