I think that the worst and most dangerous misconception people have about fascism is that it's this sort of turbocharged "Beast Mode" that countries can go into to increase their production, win wars, and make the trains run on time, and that the primary objections to it centre on whether the "obvious" increase in efficiency that fascism offers is worth the loss of freedom and lives. But in reality fascist regimes like to put up a *façade* of strength and efficiency, even as they practice corruption on a scale unimaginable in democracies and even as the public interest is hollowed out by parasitical opportunists. There is no trade-off; fascism is a grift all the way down.

You get bombed every day. You get scared from every fucking loud noise. Is it a motorcycle? Is it a missile? Is that raid alert siren really in my game and not outside?
You get told it's your own fault.
You get called a nazi for the mere fact you're born a ukrainian. God forbid you want to speak your language.
You get told to be grateful, to stop reacting this bad. You're emotional, you can't react rationally. Your close friend died in the frontline, in the rubble of destroyed home, their home was flooded.
There's ecocide in your home. You get told you did it yourself.
You show some dignity in ignoring russians in international spaces, ignoring their sneers and all to knowing smiles. Your home is being destroyed, you know things that happened to your friends, that if you told these as it is to your western friends they'd have nightmares.
Your friends and relatives are being killed and then russians are putting you into situations where you are forced to interact with them, and when you ignore them, they cry russophobia and play victim.
You are standing there with a bleeding wound within yourself, but you get told you're reveling in the war, you love being invaded. The Russian who just weaponised her white tears is laughing at you and asking "Don't you respect me?"

That part about the boys hurts really badly. I know she's right about it. Alas Ukrainian society still has a long road ahead of it in regards to tolerance and acceptance. Before anyone starts banging that stupid russian drum 'Ukronazis', I would like to underline the fact that the most of homophobia is a Soviet legacy, and the prolonged exposure to post-soviet russian culture which only doubled down on the whole 'fa**ots are not humans' thing.
There is also a huge Orthodox Church problem in Ukraine which remains the only 'authentic' spreader of homophobia and intolerance in my country.

@maydesu: Do you know that in soviet countries there was “socialist morality” (in my language “moralność socjalistyczna”). This is old reactionary bullshit ( you should have only one partner, women should “respect herself”, sex beyond procreation is bad, there are only two genders, men and women should obey gender norms etc.) with additional anti-western resentment (youth shouldn’t wear blue jeans or listen to rock’n’roll, boys should have short hair). Of course if you were young communist from France or Italy or Latin America no one bothered you with that crap. Because communist parties have to recruit young people in democratic countries - and “socialist morality” would discourage any healthy teenager with basic common sense. But communist Poland in 50s was such reactionary like frankist Spain.

I don’t know if it is ok to reblog, because I am not Ukrainian. I want to add that homophobia is problem in my country too. I guess this is general problem in Eastern-Central Europe.
When in USA and Western Europe gay liberation movement fought for queer people rights, in my country people fought for basic things like freedom of speech or freedom of association, because soviet russia took away our citizen rights (in 1920s Poland was democratic country, and unlike for example in UK, gay sex between consenting adults was legal). Without these rights queer people wasn’t able to express themselves or organize. I think we are now, where the western queer movement were in 90s. Chnages are very slow, but they are happening - my first Pride in ‘04 was nightmare (ultras and skinheads threw stones at us), now this is peacefull festive event, where people are dancing and having fun.
Compared to russia, Poland or Ukraine are better place to live for queer people. At least we can organize Prides, wave rainbow flag publicly or be out in public space. Most of queer people in my country knows that putin would take away few rights that we already have.
I add this, because I want to show that: no, there is no “ukronazis”, there are human struggling with some problems. According to ILGA survey Ukraine is a little bit less homophobic than Poland.
