Fake cover for a Crow Father comic cover, distributed by OSMP Comics. This one took so long, mostly because I struggled with the color palette and costume design so hard.

magic system where “dark magic” and “light magic” are literal terms - dark magic consumes photons, making an area around the spell visibly darker, sometimes to an Extreme extent, and light magic releases photons.

because of this most dark mages tend to work in very brightly-lit areas (either artificial light or outside in the daytime) to fuel their spells and wear and use lightly coloured clothes and tools so that they’re easier to see in the dimness their spells create, whereas light mages wear heavy, sometimes leaden robes (depending on the work being done) and the magical equivalent of welding masks to protect themselves from what can be an extreme amount of light, and sometimes other kinds of electromagnet radiation!

needless to say this is incredibly confusing for anyone unfamiliar with the culture

due to the fact that both magics react with basically all of the electromagnetic spectrum - not just the visible light part of it - dark magic is enormously useful for radiation protection (uv-eating spellwork as sunscreen, anyone?), but also has the slightly uncomfortable effect of eating infared as well - which does have the effect of making areas around powerful or prolonged dark magic uncomfortably chilly.

nothing that a nice fur coat or enchanted light-magic IR-emitting lamps can't fix!

Meanwhile, light mages all have a tan. Sunburns and frostbite are the marks of uncontrolled magic.

Advanced concepts of dark magic include balancing out heat loss from infrared with generation of microwaves, invisibility and camouflage, and communication magic by turning visible messages into radio.

Advanced concepts of light magic include clairvoyance (x-ray vision and fluorescence), sterilisation with UV, generation of electricity and momentum using the photelectric effect and radiation pressure, magnetism, and the conversion of radio back into visible messages.

Both parties also have their own flavour mind control. Dark magic users dampen the electric signals in the brain, casting truth spells by lowering inhibitions, casting sleep spells and calming emotions. They can also tame animals using this, making familiars exclusive to them.

Light magic increases electric signals in the brain. They charm people by increasing positive feelings, cause fear and can even deal psychic damage by overwhelming the mind. They do not have familiars but they can cause animals to go berserk and sometimes keep caged animals on them to let loose on their foes.

coming on here to say that i don’t think gifset creators get nearly as much appreciation as they deserve. it’s such a special kind of art and one that really flourishes here on tumblr, and although i see them all over the feed i feel like we don’t take enough time to give a shoutout to the actual makers of the sets themselves. i’ve tried a few times to make my own gifs and it gave me a real appreciation for the art. it makes me so happy when i see gifs of characters/relationships i like on the dash, so gifsets are so important to me
