by far the most interesting part of the latest You’re Wrong About on homosexuality in the animal kingdom is the account of how science missed it for so long. the guest, lulu miller (of radiolab fame) basically divides the reasons into three categories: ignorance, self-suppression, and what you might call “official” suppression.

essentially, since the days of thomas aquinas when it had been simply declared that homosexuality was inherently against nature, you had a lot of observers of the natural world, even once the enlightenment got underway, who simply didn’t know what they were looking at. many animal species are very sexually dimorphic and thus easy to sex; but many more are not, and if your background assumption (because the background assumption of society in general) is that homosexuality does not occur in nature, if you see two animals of unidentified sex mating, you will assume one is male and one is female. or you might simply assume what you are seeing is an aberration, with no real systemic significance, and not pointing to any kind of underlying phenomenon, and simply fail to note it down–or talk to any other naturalists about it.

and this blends into self-suppression, which includes all researchers who might have noticed homosexuality among animals in the wild, but didn’t write about it. this includes researchers who might not have thought it was significant, or who might have thought nobody was interested in it–miller offers the example of a guy who died relatively recently who spent his life studying mountain rams, who omitted mentioning from his quite detailed survey of their behavior that about one in twelve males mate exclusively with other males, because it seemed to him (at the time of writing) an aberrant and unpleasant fact about an otherwise majestic creature.

“official” suppression we might apply to any time a researcher noticed and wanted to write about the phenomenon, but who simply couldn’t get their data published, including researchers who might have pressed the scientific community at large to recognize this phenomenon, only to be greeted with hostility and suspicion–i.e., what kind of pervert is so obsessed with this topic?

and out of a combination of all these factors you get centuries of a bias being confirmed, because anybody who might care to ask, “well, homosexuality clearly occurs in humans, have we observed it in other animals?” would have been confronted with a vast lacuna in the scientific literature, not because it did not occur, but because multiple intersecting cultural biases prevented anybody from actually talking about it. and it makes it hard to have a conversation about natural phenomena from an empirical and rational perspective when a bias that irrational runs that deep! and i cannot help but wonder what other biases we have in our culture, that might be producing similarly irrational lacunae in our apprehension of the world.

I like to think that, for whatever reason, Wild’s hyrule is just c o l d. Like, stupidly cold. Whether it be because of thousands of years of difference or climate change or whatever, I like to think that the Chain was completely unprepared for it. They go up a mountain / visit the Rito village, and the chain is struggling. They all laughed at Wild for quickly switching into different gear, but that changed really quick. Time got over it pretty quickly because he’s Time, Warriors and Legend are shivering their asses off and are trying to use the ember rods, and Twilight is carrying Wind, Four, and Hyrule. The only person not freezing to death is Sky, who lived on skyloft / above the clouds for 17 years and knows a thing about cold, and is acting normal not even wearing a coat. (I subsequently headcanon that he also feels overly warm when anywhere else which is why he’s always sleepy).

the actual core reason why people will hand-wring and fearmonger over kink, and to a lesser extent body modification, and to a lesser extent than that extreme sports, then contact sports, etc. is because capitalism preserves the christian ideal of external ownership of the body (i.e. being "made in his image" and an extension of god) but offloads the divine onto labor and the production of capital, which is why you'll never see these people putting 1/100th the effort into spreading awareness about the fatality rates in logging, oil rigging, garbage collection, or any other inherently dangerous field. the sin isn't the destruction of one's own body, but instead the leisurely and "senseless" destruction of property and potential labor rightfully owned by capital. it's only self-destruction if you do it in your freetime. sorry i went off theme, boyhole girlspit dying bird motif etc

I feel like the punishment for someone disconnecting during a Salmon Run is too harsh. I’ve had a game where I disconnected while fighting the king salmonid and and found out even though I passed round 3 I got demoted.
Also had a match where a coworker disconnected and caused the match to lag, not letting enough bosses to spawn in.
If Anarchy doesn’t count it as a loss if your team member disconnects, why can’t Salmon Run?
I think curling bomb would see way more play if the charge indicator visualized how far it was going to travel, just like you can see the arc of thrown bombs. Half charges are its superpower, but people only use it uncharged for mobility or fully charged for niche ledge kills.

Every storyline about doubting your faith depicts loss of religion as this tragic thing that must be overcame by renewal of faith, but for a lot of people, losing their religion is a beautiful, liberating journey. I wish there were more stories like that.

It’s always really tragic to me when someone “struggles” with faith - where doubting the fact-claims of their religion is felt as like a... moral test. That they have to try to *push* themselves not to listen to the part of them that is making sense, getting wrapped up in this extreme guilt for the crime of almost being right about something.

just an fyi for people who've let their social skills atrophy by spending too much time on tumblr:

autism levels, few “often get wrong” points need highlight again

[transcript: autism levels, few “often get wrong” points need highlight again]

^ masterpost by birdofmay for more basic stuff no able explain rn, like “what are levels” “how determine levels”

  • autism levels about how much support you need for autism specific symptoms—specifically, two autism criteria, social communication & restrictive repetitive.
  • not how much you feel like you struggle
  • levels compare you to all autistics. not allistic neurotypical nondisabled people.
  • level 1 mean “need support.” level 1 can struggle. unsupported burnt out level 1 can struggle a lot. unfortunately level 1 can be miserable in life.
  • not able finish school, not able drive, not able keep job, need help cant live independent—none of that automatic level 2 & 3. none of that automatic mean not level 1. know many people who level 1 who all that. level 2&3 people tend more common be those thing because autism symptoms cause very big struggle. but autism levels not actual about any of that.
  • autism levels is DSM 5 thing. country no use DSM 5 not get levels. countries use DSM 5, sometimes doctor still not assign levels, because that doctor don’t use levels, or level 1 & just leave out write.
  • autism level is official diagnosis thing. different from self diagnosing autism itself (which for lsn/level 1/etc have many resources about what it like, community, and like. not life risky), autism level really not same and not recommend self diagnose, to put nicely. because it about amount official support need, & limited info about level 2/3 (yes, even if look like many of us on tumblr, still very few), and because that most people never actual met entire autism spectrum met actual level 3 in person not to mention enough to be good sample size, so most have understanding of autism & autism levels that heavily lean to level 1, wrongly think any struggle w autism mean level 2 or 3. put in plainly, most you all don’t know don’t see enough about higher levels to actual label correctly (this actual include level 2/3 people—although yes personal experience, but that one experience).
  • many level 2 & 3 diagnose as that because we need the official support. for not die, for physical survive, and/or for basic quality of life. it not fun little label to collect to call self unfortunately
  • also, i say a lot of level 2/3 i abbreviate put them together because online autism community not often include both. but level 2 & 3 can be quite different quite far not “basic same thing”
  • autism level describe general average symptom & support needed
  • autism level can change over entire life, like born level 3 but adult now & level 2 or even 1(rare), or born level 1 & now adult level 2.
  • autism levels cannot change over hours days or short term in general. cannot “level 1 good day & level 3 bad day.” not even “last (few) month level 3 this (few) month level 1.”
  • autism levels not same as functioning labels. although can be use in same ableist way people use functioning labels. but fault is ableism. (remind that some people do self ID as low functioning after their diagnose and that okay)
  • autism level is not perfect and need improve
  • autism level important & needed especially for many of us who need many support or our autism symptom very big or struggle communicate.

i’ve seen a lot of posts talking about nimona’s queer messages which is great! but ive not seen as many posts talking analyzing how both ballister and ambrosius were changed to be asian, which is a shame because i genuinely think its one of the most important parts of the film! a huge part of it is a deconstruction of the model minority myth and respectability politics, both of which are big issues in the asian american community. both of them represent each side of the spectrum, with ambrosius expected to be superhuman with very little support and ballister being seen as less than human, no matter how hard he tries- a monster.

ambrosius (who is now east asian, like his voice actor eugene lee yang, who is korean with chinese and japanese ancestry), despite being in a seemingly powerful position as head of the knights and a descendant of gloreth, he isn’t really given the kind of support that this position needs- he’s constantly undermined and belittled by todd, the face of the other knights, and when asked about his emotional state by the director, represses his emotions rather than talk to her about his true feelings. this is very similar to how asian american students in schools aren’t given the support they need academically by teachers and administration, as the model minority myth leads to them being perceived as more intelligent and competent than their fellow students and therefore not needing support. he’s also held to a higher standard than any of the other knights, being immediately placed into a position of power despite just being knighted, again a reflection of the model minority myth, since asian americans are held to higher standards unfairly. despite being technically better off than ballister, he has no support, no friends, no way to seek help for his problems, and, just like ballister, is immediately thrown away the moment the director thinks he’s served his use.

ballister is now pakistani, like his voice actor riz ahmed (no, not like pedro pascal. where did this come from lol), and i’d go as far as to say that he is also, if not explicitly muslim, heavily muslim coded as well. he’s framed as a terrorist by the white, christian institution, and from then on, it doesn’t matter how good he tries to be- everyone else sees him as a monster. he’s also from a lower socioeconomic class than ambrosius and the rest of the knights- while this is initially used to frame him as a success story, after he’s framed, it’s used to cast suspicion on him. almost immediately he’s othered, with posters casting him as a foreign invader sent to destabilize the city, much in the same way that muslim immigrants are seen in real life. even when he tries to be peaceful and good, it’s always twisted so that he’s the monster of the story. while ambrosius is held to too high of a standard, ballister will never be enough for the institution to accept.

which is why both of their arcs culminate in them breaking out of the system, learning to accept what they’d been taught was monstrous, and leaving behind respectability. it’s a genuinely great commentary, and i can definitely see why riz ahmed and eugene lee yang were chosen for this, as they’ve both done activist work for their communities.
