the latest hollowtale character list btw. if you even care
narratively I am a fan of romances that don’t ever actually become romances
I don’t mean in an aromantic life partner way, I mean romantic tension that is never resolved or acted upon for whatever reason but by the end it’s clear that both characters experienced the love of their lives without ever acknowledging it as such. but they know. they know.
maybe the unbridgeable gulf between them is culture, or class, or religion, or maybe their chief commitment is to something other than each other. maybe they decide it’s more important to keep the peace than to risk the complications of a relationship. maybe they’re just weary of change and content with things the way they are because it’s simpler that way. for whatever reason nothing is ever consummated between them, emotionally or physically.
I love that kind of quiet tragedy.
I think the biggest evidence that some members of the hs fandom have no understanding of the alphas is seen especially with the characterisation of jake being the big lumbering adventurer when the whole gag is he is not that guy
he talks about being afraid of the monstsrs on his island, largely preferring to stay in his room to watch movies instead of facing them. he tells AR he's only interested really in adventures he knows he can win he doesn't care too much for challenges.
Adventures are all about the fun for him. He wants the magic and the exploring and the puzzles but not the conflicts. Hell, he's the most conflict avoidant person, he'll actively choose to go down the path of least resistance cause it's easier, and in his lil boy brain it'll make all parties happy.
you even see it when jake is kidnapped by crockertier! Jane when he finally breaks down crying about how he doesn't wanna do any of this anymore. the adventure stops being fun and starts getting too real and jake wants to pull out. he's just a lil guy, who isn't equipped to deal with some of the shit he's been but through, he's just a lil guy.
The whole point of hs is that they're all just kids who fall hopelessly into this caricature of themselves that they've created, this version of themselves they "want" to be or think they should be but they're really not that person deep down. the kids are often unreliable in their narration of themselves or certain aspects of their life. hell you see this in how brain ghost dirk is almost always much more seething in his remarks towards jake compared to anything the actual dirk has said (that we've seen).
And people read the way these kids describe themselves and believe them whole heartedly as though these kids aren't chronically in denile about themselves more often than not.
tldr:
hes not this big sexy Indian Jones, he's just a lil cutie pie that wants the movie magic style adventures
mass death bad
Most street drugs (except weed and a few others) are now contaminated with unknown and inconsistent amounts of fentanyl and myriad other strong drugs (at least in the US and Canada, which I’m focusing on). This poisoning crisis couldn’t have happened if drugs had been legal and regulated, and it is the main cause of why drug deaths have skyrocketed in the last decade to outrageous and unprecedented heights.
I’m working on philosophy papers and posts to argue for a safer supply of regulated drugs to reduce the death. In most of my work, I assume that the mass death of people who use drugs is bad.
However, some people think the drug poisoning crisis is actually good, since it may deter drug use. I’m calling this the “mass death good” argument. There are several variants of it.
The “mass death good” argument is depraved. It is apologetics for something that is either genocide or genocide-adjacent. There’s something screwed up about even dignifying it with a response.
Nevertheless, I spent the last several hours writing a 9-page rebuttal to it. It’s still a draft, but I’ll possibly post it later after some more editing.
Not many people openly advocate the “mass death good” argument, but a lot of people may believe it secretly, or semi-believe it unconsciously. You can find people making variants of this argument in news comment sections, etc. Perhaps their values are too screwed up to be persuaded by any rebuttal.
But I think there are many benefits to developing a robust rebuttal to such an argument, even if it could not persuade many people who make the argument, and even if the argument is already low-status in some sense. It can be insightful to unpack at length what this way of thinking gets wrong. And it can expose gaps in our own intellectual foundations, too. Some people may also have more defensible attitudes, such as vaguely wondering or worrying whether the argument might be onto something, and this also merits a proper response.
The fact that a view or argument is depraved or unreasonable has never stopped me from seriously entertaining it and spending lots of time unpacking and refuting it, and this is no exception, although it does merit being careful on how to do it. (Cf. theunitofcaring’s old post on the value of safe spaces to discuss harmful ideas)
i dunno why i'm making a post about eridan but i thought about him and how people perceive him so why not
eridan is a really good exploration of the hope aspect i think. like aspects are defined by the characters which embody them and eridan defines a very dark and twisted side of hope, which is that of holding many harmful and dangerous views of the world and choosing never to question them or allow anyone to defy your idea of how the world functions. eridan is defined by these hollow and black ambitions and in turn this defines a part of the hope aspect itself: delusion
this shit reads like a manifesto. eridan is so hopelessly far gone down this path of broken belief and it's an extremely dangerous state for a prince of hope because the strength of his convictions directly correlates to his power (in a less allegorical sense, his will to act correlates to his desire to accrue a weapon to enact his beliefs in the way he sees fit, which is an extremely real thing that happens). he's convicted in his belief that he is disrespected and not taken seriously enough but refuses to address his own flaws or the trauma society has inflicted upon him through expectations and when pushed beyond the limit the result is a murderous monster of a 13-year-old boy
it's also interesting to note that eridan does not attack unless he has a personal justification for it. to him, sollux started it and got what he deserved. to him, feferi was a delusional woman who never understood him so when she charged forward he did not hesitate. with kanaya, they stood in a standoff until she glanced the way of the matriorb and his hatred of trollkind acted on its own and destroyed it, which provoked kanaya which justified his actions. to him, all of this is just "self-defense"
here, eridan's silhouette is white where kanaya's is black because eridan believes himself the purest arbiter of truth. to him, she is acting on thoughtless aggression where he is ever calm and collected. and thus he kills one of his best friends
the only reason karkat went untouched in this is because he's a man he didn't involve himself in it, only staring in shock at what he just allowed to happen but knowing he would never have stood a chance, being complacent in the actions of the higher troll, which is befitting of karkat
and it's THIS shit that is the core of eridan's entire character. you can definitely take his character further if you so wanted — he can be really engaging and even funny if you do him right — but you have to recognize that if you do, the mark he bears for his actions can never leave him. not to say he can't change, this is homestuck we're talking about, but he was written to be the ultimate product of alternia's broken and cruel systems, and it's something very important to keep in mind lest you forget what defines him
Golf is an extremely effeminate game. Its a non-contact low-exertion activity played on a perfectly manicured little picnic lawn and between individual actions you sit in a dainty car and get driven to the next spot so you arent blemished by the act of walking under the sun. If elderly men ever realized this it would be cataclysmic
You dont even have to drive the little cart or handle the clubs yourself you can go to the front desk hire one of their eunuchs to do it all for you
Are .... are the caddies normally eunuchs?
Are... Are yours not?
THERE IT IS AGAIN! THERE IT FUCKING IS! i’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS PHOTO FOR YEARS AND NEVER COULD FIND IT!! THE LAN PARTY WITH THE GUY DUCT-TAPED TO THE CEILING!! BACK IN ANCIENT TIMES WHEN PEOPLE STILL USED CATHODE MONITORS AND WHEN COUNTERSTRIKE WAS THE NEW THING. THIS SHIT IS REAL. THIS IS REAL SHIT. SHIT THAT HAPPENED.
Blackundertaker for the link. So kotaku did an interview with a butch of people to track down the people connected with the LAN party.
From the article.
The picture in question originates from Mason, Michigan, where a close group of friends who liked to build personal computers and organize LAN parties grew up. Through Reddit and email, we were able to get in touch with a large portion of the group, as well as obtain verification and additional images…
For the Mason alumni, the night they taped Drew Purvis to the ceiling was just an average day, another LAN party with friends.
“It was still early in the day and the LAN had already become fractured,” said Nick Wellman, another LAN goer. “There were about 10 of us there, and we were already playing three, four different games. Tyler was looking around and said, ‘I think you can duct tape someone to that I-beam.’”
At this point, the teens gathered the necessary supplies, bought duct tape on a friend’s employee discount and had the tallest attendee, Brian, hold the subject, Drew, aloft while the rest taped him up.
What you see in the now-iconic photo is actually the group’s second attempt to suspend their friend from the ceiling with duct tape. After about 10 minutes, the tape digging into his sides, Drew asked to be cut down. They revised their plan, adding pillows, and strapped him back up. Once on the beam, someone else had the idea to stack some tables up so Drew could still play on his computer.
“That is the funniest part about the picture,” Nick told us. “Gaming from the beam was a complete afterthought.”
Drew lasted about two hours suspended above his comrades before retiring to the ground (turns out a duct tape cocoon runs hot).
decided that today's the day I'm going to fix my entire life. I'm gonna stop having social anxiety. I'm gonna care about the environment. I'm gonna. become left handed ??
war and murder are awful. killing another human being is a horrible thing to do. swords and guns are cool as fuck. these two beliefs exist simultaneously in my mind and do not conflict at all
ADHD in the era of the personal brand is wild.
You get into a thing and hyperfocus harder than anyone ever has hyperfocused. Dozens, hundreds of posts across multiple platforms. You discover things no one knows, you create many new things, you intangibly weave your very digital soul into the threads of this niche thing’s fabric. You are now known as “The Thing Guy” on several websites (despite not being a guy). People screenshot it and crosspost it to other websites, and the comments are like “OH IT’S THE THING GUY AGAIN!”
three weeks later, you drop it like a stone. You still want to do it, but you have no more motivation, and you can’t force yourself to touch it again. Your brain just goes “bored now” and moves on.
Mere months later someone goes “hey, aren’t you The Thing Guy?”. You are suddenly smoking a cigarette. You take a deep drag. “Used to be, long ago… back in March”. They look at the calendar. It’s halfway through May.
bro this rends flesh (new way of saying something is really good)
A magnificent boy
a perfect void!! I couldn’t help myself
here’s why vine was and will always be superior to tiktok you can’t really spread a lot of misinfo in 6 seconds you had to go viral on the strength of your humor and not on the allure of insane conspiracy theories or MRA talking points it’s why vines legacy will be shit like “back at it at krispy kreme” and not the downfall of democracy
To be clear I am not denying that vines was superior.
But if you think tiktok is the downfall of democracy you're either not paying attention or on the WRONG side of tiktok. There are tons of people over there dedicated to making sure the masses have access to accurate information, exposing corruption, and organizing against fascism. Tiktok is not the problem. For every bad actor there's a good one and as we like to say here at the tumblr dot com: curate your experience.
