you know what i don’t get, when ppl write angry thorin as very, idk, menacing, loud, and demanding, like it makes him grab ppl by the arm, smack his sister-sons on the head every five minutes as if they annoy him constantly, throw things, invade personal space, loom over bilbo while the hobbit recoils instinctively and stuff, i mean, did we even watch the same movies
why would bilbo be afraid of thorin when by the end of the first movie he is already telling him off, taking none of his shit, when he regards thorin as an equal, believes himself no lesser that any king from the very start, when he doesn’t hesitate to stand by thorin’s side at any point, whatever his mood, arguing with him, not even bothering to conceal his own annoyance with thorin
no one in the company is intimidated by thorin. he does look big, but he doesn’t look threatening, not really. he’s very reserved. the only scolding fili and kili ever get is verbal and actually quite mild, and already they look so guilty - it really does show how gentle he must be with them most of the time. even with dwalin there isn’t any of that good-natured brawling that is so popular in fanfics (although there’s some in the bts videos, i grant you). all thorin and dwalin do in the movies is basically whisper “fucking elves” to each other and tut all over everyone, rolling their eyes disapprovingly. also dwalin despite being quite rude with everyone else (even with bard’s kids) is practically cooing over thorin lmao he knows full well that his king has a soft soul
when thorin is angry he shuts down and backs away, sulking, actually growing distant - i can see no connection between being displeased and expressing it physically in his conduct, on the contrary, the only thing that makes him attempt physical contact is affection. physicality is a happy thing for him, pleasant and reassuring. touching is reserved for caring gestures, forehead-bumping and shoulder-grabbing and hugs, it’s so telling and important and intimate that he doesn’t even touch the hobbit much because he is goddamn awkward and transparent af and a hopeless nerd and i cannot get over thorin oakenshield help help help…
