if i google gluten free recipes. i want gluten free recipes. not vegetarian nonsense

i was outta eggs one day and wanted a chocolate cake so i looked up eggless chocolate cakes and they were all like weird health conscious blogs and crap and not just like a sane person who was once in the same situation as me :/

looking online for recipes can be like wading through sewage to find a nugget of gold

whenever i mess up cooking eggs the edwardian dandy who follows me around looking over my shoulder says "poor show, old boy!" and shakes his head sympathetically

My copy of @drchucktingle's book Camp Damascus has arrived! (The publishers were kind enough to send me an advanced copy when I mentioned that I had ordered a copy but time was not kind to me as it was Finish Good Omens and Wrap Things Up Before the Strike world, and I had no personal reading time. So I'm really looking forward to settling down to read it.)

The difference between a strike and a boycott is the focus of what is being withheald

In a strike the supply is being withheald because the workers aren’t producing whatever it is.  It works by having the masses demand what the companies cannot produce and therefore, if the company wants to continue providing whatever it is in order to continue making money, they have to listen to worker demands

In a boycott the demand is being withheald because the masses aren’t buying or engaging with whatever it is.  It works because companies, obviously, need to actually sell things in order to function.  The point is to make the company change something about a product in order to appeal to the masses again

That’s why you shouldn’t boycott when a strike is on (unless the union says so) because it kind of cancels out the strike.  If there is no demand then witholding supply is meaningless - again, unless the union says so, since that means they factored it into their industrial action plan and believe it would be beneficial

I know people want to help but the reaction to call for a boycott whenever there’s a strike just kind of…… doesn’t

On this day, 19 July 1883, thousands of telegraphers working for Western Union across the United States walked out on strike demanding equal pay for equal work for men and women, along with other demands, like a pay increase and an eight-hour day. The bosses had threatened the previous day that if equal pay were implemented, it would mean that they would prefer to just use men, who they alleged “can be availed of for a greater variety of service than women”. The workers, organised in the Brotherhood of Telegraphers, ignored the threats and after management failed to respond to them, walked out. The strike began when Frank R. Phillips stood on a table in the New York office and blew a whistle. Beginning in major cities, the strike spread to rural areas. In Concord, North Carolina, the lone operator Mary Ormand walked out, and the Home and Democrat newspaper reported her office was shut and wires cut by Western Union as they “could not persuade the brave Miss Ormand to be false to her womanhood.” In total around 8,000 workers across the country participated in the strike, including between 300 and 1,000 women. Western Union was determined to break the workers, and decided to try to starve them back to work. The strikers had hoped to received support from the Knights of Labor union, but when this did not occur, the strikers were eventually forced to return to work defeated after their funds ran out. Some managers decided not to rehire strike activists, although some strikers refused to return on principle. One woman told a reporter “I will never touch a key again in my life… I would rather cut off my right hand than humiliate myself by asking for my old place.” More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/9099/western-union-telegraphers-strike https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=664607852379100&set=a.602588028581083&type=3

humans love dressing up so much and get there simply aren’t enough occasions that call for dressing up in unique clothing in contemporary western society. yet another tragic loss to the sensorium

That's why people have raves and goth nights and stuff

Okay it sounds bad but bear with me:

Someone owes me a significant amount of money, and has made it clear that they do not intend to pay me back.

I sent them one text to follow up about it around two months ago, letting them know that I wasn't stressed about it and I could wait or do installments if they needed time or things were rough, and they promptly blocked my number and deleted me on social media.

I was kinda bummed, but then, you know. I figured, it's a lot of money, but at least they've removed themselves from my life, right? If I were to choose between thinking someone like that was a reliable friend or paying a lump sum for the trash to take itself out, I could make peace with it. Whatever. Live and learn.

So, I haven't seen them in a few months. Cool. But then I was walking downtown and I see someone out of the corner of my eye just sitting around, having a drink. Don't know who, don't know what. Not paying attention, yeah? I'm living my life.

But as I get closer to walk past them, I see them get up and start booking it. And as I turn to figure out what's up, why is someone running, I recognize the back of their head, and as they look over their shoulder, we make eye contact, and then they're gone.

And I realize

I just got off work. I'm power-walking in what could ostensibly be interpreted as their direction. They look up and see someone they ghosted, who they have screwed monumentally, coming at them with a hundred-yard-stare and what they may not know is a regular resting bitch face. I don't even care about the money anymore, I've accepted it as a loss, but they blocked me on everything so they don't know that. And they went, "fuck this shit, not today" and dipped.

And that would be funny on it's own, but we do not live in a large, heavily-populated area. It's definitely going to happen again. So my question is this:

How long are they going to let themselves live in fear of my stumpy 5'3" ass hunting them down like John Wick or the devil himself before they snap

And how good is this gonna get while I let them

Does anyone remember what happened to Radio Shack?

They started out selling niche electronics supplies. Capacitors and transformers and shit. This was never the most popular thing, but they had an audience, one that they had a real lock on. No one else was doing that, so all the electronics geeks had to go to them, back in the days before online ordering. They branched out into other electronics too, but kept doing the electronic components.

Eventually they realize that they are making more money selling cell phones and remote control cars than they were with those electronic components. After all, everyone needs a cellphone and some electronic toys, but how many people need a multimeter and some resistors?

So they pivoted, and started only selling that stuff. All cellphones, all remote control cars, stop wasting store space on this niche shit.

And then Walmart and Target and Circuit City and Best Buy ate their lunch. Those companies were already running big stores that sold cellphones and remote control cars, and they had more leverage to get lower prices and selling more stuff meant they had more reasons to go in there, and they couldn't compete. Without the niche electronics stuff that had been their core brand, there was no reason to go to their stores. Everything they sold, you could get elsewhere, and almost always for cheaper, and probably you could buy 5 other things you needed while you were there, stuff Radio Shack didn't sell.

And Radio Shack is gone now. They had a small but loyal customer base that they were never going to lose, but they decided to switch to a bigger but more fickle customer base, one that would go somewhere else for convenience or a bargain. Rather than stick with what they were great at (and only they could do), they switched to something they were only okay at... putting them in a bigger pond with a lot of bigger fish who promptly out-competed them.

If Radio Shack had stayed with their core audience, who knows what would have happened? Maybe they wouldn't have made a billion dollars, but maybe they would still be around, still serving that community, still getting by. They may have had a small audience, but they had basically no competition for that audience. But yeah, we only know for sure what would happen if they decided to attempt to go more mainstream: They fail and die. We know for sure because that's what they did.

I don't know why I keep thinking about the story of what happened to Radio Shack. It just keeps feeling relevant for some reason.
