barring people from viewing posts/blogs/search results unless they sign up or sign in. essentially taking away the freedom to look at tumblr without having to make an account
prioritizing the "best posts first" over chronological viewing
prioritizing algorithms over a manually curated experience, giving users less control over what they see
isn't this the thing twitter does where you can only see the beginning and end of a thread and you have to expand ? that sounds awful
i get that this is how social media companies work in order to survive but hear me out. what if we didn't encourage social media addiction

girl, get it together. please do not fumble this like every other platform is doing right now

what makes tumblr so appealing right now is that it is DIFFERENT from other websites. i get trying to make the website more accessable for new users, but this feels so unnecessary and counterintuitive

stop saying "gen z brought back bush-era purity politics" i grew up in the bush era and even then people weren't saying that you're a sex addict for having boring marital sexual congress in the same house as your children. this is just plain unhinged

Literally almost every millennial I know has a memory of accidentally walking in on their parents or hearing their parents having sex. It's fucking normal. Human beings have sex. Your parents fuck. Get over it. Being weird about it isn't healthy.

I really loved Robert Evans’s response to this

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

Licherally in the midst of drawing a guy and crying at how bad the arms are. Thanks Tumbles

I only ever saw the part where people started drawing the limbs outrageously long and genuinely wanted to know how to fix that, so I’m really thankful to see the rest.

No joke I literally was JUST making a page of rough sketched out proportions for figurines, and was MAD struggling with getting the leg:torso ratio correct within the limited spaces I was working with. Where was this three days ago OTL

me wearily opening twitter: please show me just one nice thing for once

twitter: baldur's gate 3 lets you fuck a bear

me: you know what? good enough

you know for context initially you weren’t able to fuck the bear but people were so horny over the druid npc (who for context in his normal form is an unreasonably jacked and friendly elf) that the studio threw up its hands and said “fuck it you all are calling him a bear let’s make it legit” and then they showed the vampire twink character getting fucked by the bear on stream and got banned. there’s also a toe sucking scene in the game that they used for promotional material. it’s also got some of the best character writing and encounter design in any RPG I’ve ever played.

Threads update so you don’t have to:

I have not followed many people yet. As such, Threads’ algorithm is populating my feed with anything it can lay hands on. I have to assume it is not, in fact, using Instagram data, because if it were, my feed would look A SHIT TON BETTER THAN THIS. If you like American ball-centric sports, you are valid and I am happy for you, but I Do Not, and my feed is football and basketball posts as far as the eye can see. Also, streaming services’ PR accounts. Lotta Disney properties and Netflix. Something called Wasted posts constantly, I don’t know what it is. Someone who has a cooking show on cable. Various actors. Oh God, this is everything I don’t follow on Twitter. Why am I here.

I sat there muting accounts for like five minutes and then I had an existential crisis and stared at the wall for a moment. If all I’m doing is muting, why am I even there? If I weren’t on it to report back, would I just close the thing and never return? Will it get better as more people join? Part of my problem is that I’ve stayed off Twitter so long that I’m not even sure I enjoy the microblogging format, period, anymore. Maybe I’ll get back into the rhythm of it? But apparently I think in paragraphs, not short sentences. I like having room to clarify what I’m saying. I like the (comparatively) slower turnover of my dash.

The worst part is that you’d say, if you want your feed to be calmer, then curate your experience. Unfollow people. But I can’t, because Threads is shoving strangers at me. So is Twitter these days. Maybe Threads will become The Conversation™ the way Twitter used to be, something worth slogging through to feel “in the know,” but right now, from a usability perspective, it’s not.

Threads is everything terrible about Instagram and everything terrible about post-Musk Twitter with none of the positives of either. I saw someone describe it as "pure, digital Los Angeles. I don't know how else to describe it."

It doesn't matter who you follow or what options you choose, you'll never see posts in chronological order or even posts from people you follow. You get whatever The Algorithm™ decides you get in whatever order The Algorithm™ decides to show it to you in. And because it's drawing from Instagram, what The Algorithm™ decides to show you is all the worst of influencer bullshit.

And that's just the user experience. Not to mention the privacy nightmare so bad the app is already banned in the EU because its data collection is illegal there. Not to mention that you can't even log on to "register your name" since it's whatever your Instagram name is. Not to mention that it's impossible to delete your Threads account without also deleting your Instagram account. Not to mention that the Terms of Service specifically allows Meta/Facebook to use anything posted - text, images, and video - to train "AI" with no way to opt out.

Threads is the distillation of the worst of social media.
