birds collide at night

@keeponshouting / keeponshouting.tumblr.com

hey hey its not ok to keep you running with a sharp knife my my we've gone astray we got distracted with our own lives yea yea it's new year's day we take the yoke and pull it back blind hey hey we're on our way we keep on shouting when the birds...

so much cookie dough in our fridge, y’all. bestie’s made chocolate chip, sugar, and cocoa and might still do shortbread. i’ve made spice, milk, and hamantaschen and still have several batches of tea cookies to make while the kolac dough rises on the 24th.

tomorrow i’m sewing, just for a change of pace.

and most excitingly, i’ve thus far managed to - knock on wood - NOT wind up in hospital! you know, unlike the last two years. is it a christmas miracle? third time’s the charm? idek

omg y'all, my voice is so squeaky today. Like sometimes I lose my voice and it just gets kind of husky and airy and deep but not this time! Nope! Today, my laugh sounds like a fairy passing gas.

sup tumblr. your cryptid grandpa over here is sick and cranky and dysphoric af. hope y’all are feeling better than i am.

is the gradual implosion of twitter really going to force me to move all of my vtubing and art stuff (back) over to tumblr?

so yeah hi, i guess. i’m still alive. still sick. still tired. still depressed. still in pain. still struggling. just waiting on a new computer so I can start getting back into twitch and hopefully the youtubes.

also, allergies are still bullshit.

got my genetic test results back. the list of psychiatric medications that DO NOT have known potential for adverse genetic interaction was so short that if you subtracted the ones i’ve already tried, you could count the “safe” candidates on your fingers. so yeah.

neurosurgeon in may. disability hearing in june. and i’m going to bed now.

These look like old timey black and white photos but it’s actually the Mackinac bridge like. Right now

This bridge is roughly 5 miles long and 200 feet above the water at its peak.

I would literally shit my pants if I had to drive across it in those conditions.

Avatar

I’ve driven the bridge in snow fog like today and it is the most nerve wracking experience of your life. Especially when you’re driving on the grating and can see the fog/water below you

For those of you concerned. Yes, the Mackinac bridge has center lane grating that you can see through

I haven’t posted in quite a while but I need somewhere to express my extreme frustration regarding the fact that I’ve gone through all the bullshit of taking steroids in an attempt to relieve some of the pain and inflammation from my latest Incident (my leg stopped working! it was great! had to call an ambulance and everything!) only to have the pain come back with a goddamn vengeance halfway through the dose pack. So, happy new year or whatever. Last December/January it was my gallbladder trying to explode. This time a disc is trying to rupture or some such nonsense. ER for Christmas and surgery for the new year are not holiday traditions I’d like my body to begin, thanks, particularly if it continues with this trend of escalation.

Some holiday-ish goodies for the ACNH folks. Started doing some clothes design again yesterday and I’ve got more stuff on the way. I was going to post the Hanukkah set with these (way late, ugh) but I’m not happy with how the dress turned out so I want to fix that up first. I’ll post them as soon as that’s done, which could be tonight or could be Monday. Who knows? It’s been a rough week and I’m not ready for obligatory family time.

Some photos from Birdie (Lasiodora parahybana) moving into a larger enclosure a month and some ago, after they were caught piling substrate into one corner of their sling enclosure so they could gradually lift the lid off. That's just backstory, though. Today's "give daddy a heart attack" moment was far worse. Like I thought Legs, my Brachypelma boehmei sling, escaping a couple months back scared me? Birdie basically just said "hold my meal worm and lemme show you how it's done."

So after never being much of a burrower, Birdie got a little freaked out by all the extra space and decided to dig under the leaves. They've been really into building their nest, honestly. It's been fun to watch their ingenuity. I hadn't actually seen more than their toes basically all month, though, and I knew they were due for a molt soon so I was a little worried when they didn't eat any of their latest couple meals, since that's how I'd been keeping track of their activity, making sure they were okay. Three meals uneaten and I decided to check on them. Make sure they molted okay and all that.

Now, anybody with a burrowing sling or even adult may be able to see where this is going.

So this afternoon, while checking on my leggedy children - filling water, leaving meal worm, etc. - I went ahead and carefully lifted the leaves and thereby the lid off of Birdie's burrow. Only to see three tangled legs sticking up out of the substrate! I had a moment of immediate panic and I think scared my roommate a little. I'm thinking "No! No they have to be okay!" and go to gently poke at the dirt near the legs and...another pair of legs move in a little hole underneath the first, oriented in the complete opposite direction from the first, as they dart back into hiding. Little jerk had molted, left the shell there like a skull on a pike to warn off their enemies, and just kept digging.

Raise tarantulas, they said. It'll be relaxing, they said. Goddamn.

wacky idea here but maybe we should be focusing our efforts on securing accessible healthcare and a decent standard of living for disabled people and everyone else instead of micromanaging people’s vocab

if i don’t receive a $600 injection (which costs $15 to manufacture) every month my immune system will overload, immobilize, and likely kill me but heaven forbid someone online tell me to touch grass

Listen my skull is literally squishing my brain and it makes me spacey and my memory fucky, if my wife and I don’t get to call my dumbass stupid when I bluescreen then you owe me $1,000 for a proper wheelchair for when I inevitably lose mobility because y'all are too fuckin focused and what word may hurt my feewings and not enough on making sure my doctors spend more than 5 minutes seeing me

The amount of people in the notes who are saying “why not do both” ie unironically ignoring the words of disabled people and the fact that we’ve said that people explicitly use language policing as an excuse to not do any further activism that would make a much bigger difference to our lives than if one person on the internet didn’t call another stupid is WILD.

Just like, keep patting yourselves on the back for being woke and not do fuck all else, why don’t you? Disabled people aren’t your prop.

Abled people are wild sometimes. (Some disabled people are pretty wild, too. ngl) Yes, monitoring your language is great but, as an adult, supporting our access to the resources we need in order to live and even - gasp! - thrive is a much more meaningful use of your time and energy. "Don't use these words because they're offensive/demeaning/etc." is a lesson to teach your children. The lesson to teach grown-ups is "Protecting someone's feelings is a lot less important than protecting their physical and mental health."

If you are American, PLEASE SUPPORT THE SSI RESTORATION ACT OF 2021

This new bill has been introduced in both the house and the Senate.

Among other things, it will:

  • Raise the monthly disability income by just over 30 percent - bringing it to poverty level.
  • Remove penalties for recieving financial help from friends and family.
  • Increase the amount of assets a disabled person may have from $2,000 to $10,000 (this hasn't been updated since 1989)
  • Update outside income restrictions to allow disabled people to receive up to $399 a month without reducing their benefits.
  • REWARD, not penalize, people who want to receive additional income while on social security income.
  • REMOVE THE MARRIAGE BAN YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT THIS WILL REMOVE THE MARRIAGE BAN

For those unaware current regulations do a lot to oppress disabled people. In fact marriage equality doesn't even extend to disbled people who risk having their benefits reduced or outright taken away if they marry someone. This means that in common law states disabled people can't even live with their significant other or they risk losing their financial independence.

Current regulations mean that if you're disbled you can't have so much as one penny over $2,000 to your name. So buying a car and gaining more independence or freedom is largely out of the question for disabled people.

Current regulations penalize social security recipients who receive income from outside sources, even if those sources are reimbursement. Did you get paid to babysit for a few hours? That's income, and you get your benefits reduced. Did you loan a friend $10 and they pay you back? The government considers that $10 income, and you get your benefits reduced.

These aren't mere anecdotes - these are all examples of actual things that have happened to disbled people I know, and if you have any disabled friends in your life I'm sure they can tell you the same stories.

If you value marriage equality, if you value financial independence, if you value the rights of disbled people, please PLEASE support this bill! Contact your reps, vote, and make noise! This is a great thing!

This is super important, guys!

I didn’t get any pictures of Birdie’s molt because I didn’t have my phone when I first noticed and I didn’t want to stress them out but here are a couple of progress shots for Legs. I’ve been keeping an eye on them for the last several weeks because they created this little burrow under their watering spoon and pretty much refused to come out or eat, just sort of pacing their little hidey hole, so I knew it was about time. Now here they are this morning! Time for me to have the usual molting anxiety, I guess.
