Why do you coach soccer ?
It’s incredibly important for you to understand WHY you step out onto the soccer field each day.
Every kid comes in the world confident, balanced with nature, in connection with god or whatever you like to call it.
But sometimes the adults take that away.
They are the ‘other’ team, the other side and a lot of them are blinded by the shadow of their own egos.
If you are a coach I want you to think, really think about why you coach soccer?
Sounds a simple question doesn’t it?
But it could be the most important question you ever ask yourself and the question that determines whether you wil be a soccer ‘success’ or not.
I’ve highlighted the word success because soccer success is not only measured in trophies and medals after all not everybody can win can they?
No, soccer success means that you are true to yourself, your beliefs, your capacities, you always give 100% in your pursuit to play or coach the game.
Why do you COACH soccer?
Do you do it because if you win you feel a better person?
If this is the case then let me tell you then you are doing it for the wrong reason!!
Winning a game or losing a game will NOT make you a better or worse person.
It’s important for you to divorce YOURSELF from what you DO.
You are NOT a result.
You are a human being who is doing something he loves.
Do you really love it? Do you really love coaching soccer ?
If you do , WHY do you love it?
Ask yourself these questions, each and everyone of you will have different answers, as it will mean different things to all of you.
If there is just ONE piece of advice I could give you and it’s up to you if you take it or not. It’s this :
The game is NOT about you anymore.
That sounds harsh but it’s true. When you were a young soccer player then it was about YOU but now you are a coach it’s not about you but about the kids you are coaching.
That sounds very simple doesn’t it but you would be amazed at how many coaches forget this and use the kids and their success as a stepping stone to ‘better’ things higher up the soccer ‘ladder’.
YOU, after reading this will not make the same mistakes because you will realise that the the better you make your players feel, then the more enjoyment they will have and the more enjoyment they have, the better they will play, which, in turn, will give you greater satisfaction.
You are the circle you create by putting the kids at the centre of your soccer coaching.
I’m sure that you know all of this already but it’s always good to be reminded of things along the way.
I know from experience that sometimes in the soccer ‘jungle’ it’s easy to forget why you actually do what you do!
It’s good sometimes to take stock of the reason you are in the game, what you love about coaching soccer and truly start to enjoy it by understanding your motives a little better .
If you have strayed away from your original intentions, that’s fine , we all do that from time to time, but now you can sit down quietly maybe even write down your motivations for coaching , write down the things you DON’T like and see if there is any way you can adjust these .
There are so many things you can do to ensure you intensify your coaching experience.
It’s important to remember as I said to the players in the first part of this report that soccer is NOT only about winning, only one team can win.
Of course you and your team will do everything’s you can to win each and every game but you can do it in a way that improves you and your players whole soccer experience.
I hear you asking HOW?!
Well by sitting down on your own and asking what kind of soccer team do I want to coach ?
What values do I want that team to have?
How can I implement this ? What style if football so I want them to play and why and how can I implement this ?
Once you understand all of these questions and answer then then you are on your way to becoming a better soccer coach !!!
There is a reason why you must do all of this:
A lot of coaches, not only in soccer but in different sports are like ‘plastic bags blowing in the wind’.
They win a game and life is GREAT!
They lose a game and life SUCKS!
Then they are in a cycle , their lives decided by a result at the weekend!!
But YOU will be different. How?
You will be different because you have given yourself the reasons WHY you are coaching and HOW you want to go it and according to certain values that will NEVER change no matter what the result is.
Your players will understand the values you have set out and will do everything they can to help you implement them.
As soon as they see you mean it and you tell them that what you are going to do will ensure that they will enjoy their soccer more, that they will NOT be at the ‘mercy ’ of the result then they will love you even more!
They will have a set of playing values , a style they understand and a coach who gives then the room the space and the encouragement to put this into action.
When you start to see all of your players react individually and collectively at the same time you will THEN begin to understand WHY you love coaching !!
Good Luck and Happy Soccer!!
