It’s funny when I say “we definitely need another lockdown” how people are like “that would tank the economy!!!!1!!” like I give a damn. My life as an immunocompromised person matters more than the economy, so do the lives of everyone else. I survived 2008. I’d be fine.

I don’t give a fuck about the economy, about your social life, about anything but my survival and the survival of other medically fragile people. We are not a reasonable sacrifice, we are not acceptable loss. Ableism is ingrained at the very core of modern society and this pandemic has been a horrific show of it. More people died of COVID in 2021 than they did in 2020. This is simply because able bodied people got tired of living in a pandemic and started pretending it wasn’t happening.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't have a lock down but "I survived 2008, I'd be fine" is such a callous statement. The economy matters not because of stocks and businesses losing profits we saw during the last lock down that Amazon and walmart will be fine. But many people will lose their jobs and housing. We have a government that is clearly unable to pass the needed legislation and things are only about to get worse. People are going to lose their lives due to lack of housing, health care, and resources. It's January. It's cold. If the economy takes a turn for the worse that's just going to happen, and those deaths won't be counted. They probably won't be even be noted. So just keep that in mind when you're saying that the economy doesn't matter.

Disabled people are far more likely to be living under the poverty line than able-bodied people. Also, as I stated in another reblog, having a breadwinner die of COVID or a family member become seriously ill and incur thousands of dollars of medical debt has the same effect of financially tanking a family. Do you know how fucking expensive it is to be sick in America? Acutely or long term? Are you aware of long COVID, that someone who was formerly able-bodied could become chronically ill or physically disabled by this virus, effecting their ability to work all together perhaps permanently? Could you use your minuscule little brain to maybe empathetically think about the effects this virus could have on human life and humanity? I’m not saying a financial depression would have no effect on anyone at all, I’m saying it is far better than treating the pandemic with the evil flippant nature we currently are. I’m saying disabled people and the elderly deserve to live. I’m saying COVID is dangerous even if you don’t think you’d die if you caught it. I’m saying employers value profit over the lives of their employees or society as a whole, that isn’t the fault of disabled people who want a lockdown.

Hi! Non-immunocompromised person here. In three days it’ll be a year since I got infected with covid because, although I never went out and took any and all precautions, a family member of mine thought it was a good idea to go partying (when vaccines weren’t a thing yet, too!).

I didn’t fear for my life, since I was 19 and healthy, but I did lose my sense of taste and smell. Temporary symptom, right? To this day, almost year later, I cannot taste or smell things like I used to. Coca Cola tastes like gasoline, and I physically feel sick when I smell cooked meat. My diet is fucked, I can only bring myself to eat dinner most days, and even then it’s mostly very plain foods. When the house next door had a gas leak, it was my parents that had to tell me to get out because I couldn’t smell it at all. I’m tired and fatigued all the time, and I literally cannot tell if it’s caused by covid or if it’s because I don’t eat!!

Fuck anyone who thinks covid isn’t a big deal. It’s real, and it happened to me and so many other people. If literally dying doesn’t faze you, maybe living with a disability might! Support and keep immunocompromised people safe, and yourself too!
