i love the beautiful tyranny of glass and concrete. crush the feeble bones of naturalism under your heel you mighty, you godlike-terrible giants!
I feel this, but I also like the revenge aspect of tree roots creepres and moss overtaking concrete and glass. The idea that straight lines and perfect symmetries can, in the long run, be defeated.
why you gotta pit two bad bitches against each other
Pretty sure you’ve done this ask game before, but you were a 🐯 until I actually talked to you. Now you’re a 🐰

(This is REAL Gear Theory, done by REAL Gear Theoreticians)
these days my modal reaction to thought experiments seems to be nothing more or less than "wow, what an unpleasant thing to think about"
actually, as a gross person, when I use purity language to express moral judgments it's reclamatory
Art is going to die because you can't be paid a middle class salary to make things other people want if those other people can make those things themselves. Remember that the fundamental element of self-expression is not creation, it's the construction of a tollbooth; if they don't have to go through you, the certified artiste, then it doesn't count as real art.
I understand that people who are up on this high horse are annoying and deserve an eyeroll at best, but I do think for a lot of people psychologically for making art to be satisfying, the act of creation has to be involved. After all, I'm technically making music happen when I put on a record and press play, and the music that I'm making happen is better than the music I can produce using an instrument, but I feel like it'd be wrong to say I'm creating art when I do this.
Mabe you don't feel that way, but I know I do. And like, my "identity" is not translator in any way, but you know I actually did translate stuff, I'm not faking it. I personally don't at all feel like translating using GPT. And translating by hand when you can use GPT instead also feels stupid and not fun. I'm assuming there are people who feel this way about art now, and so they're dropping out of making art.
AI will reduce people who create non-AI art to the periphery, in the same way that some people still do calligraphy and develop their own film. On the other hand creating art will be much easier, and there will be more of it. This is good for art as a commodity, but to the extent that the art is improved compared to the initial intent in the creation process, I do think really good art will be more rare.
the point about whether it counts as making music to put on a record and press play is interesting, because that feels entirely analogous to say, learning to perform a piece that has already been composed
that is to say, is there a reason we should expect ai to have a stifling effect on artistic creativity if recording technology does not seem to have had a stifling effect on musical performance?
Other songbirds: "Here is the song of my people that I learned from my parents and them from theirs, with only minimal variation from generation to generation. I hope you like it and choose me as a mate :)"
Mimics: "I am singing you an original romantic piece I composed called, "Sounds of a Car Alarm""
this works on me
bitches love it when you tell them "you really ought to have sex with me"
So, it's time to talk about songwriting. You are to listen and pay attention not just to the harmony, but to what you expect the melody and harmony to be next. You might want to listen twice in a row, before reading on. You'll understand.
This song, if you ask me, makes a promise and keeps it much later; it's all about setting up this expectation, making you want the promised thing, then eventually delivering.
So, the phrase from 21 seconds to 26 seconds, "it's like a river that flows to the sea", has this... Implied cadence, to me. It makes me expect a very specific thing. But that's not what we get! (Hmm, did I expect it even on my very first listen?)
Then, 42 seconds to 47 seconds, same deal, it sets up the same expectation. But it diverts differently this time! And in a more-taunting way, if anything. Then, 1:02 to 1:08, same thing, same diversion.
Then at 1:22 to 1:27, same setup again, and then... At 1:30 to 1:36, they finally give it to us! The thing we were expecting! "The river must flow... From me", with the cadence we wanted to hear all this time.
Then the guitar solo, then another shorter but similar structure, ending with the "from me" cadence, repeated.
