when the media uses phrases like “the union is demanding higher pay” they want you to think hey wait i wish i got paid better you’re telling me these whiny writers are refusing to work? i’m way worse off than them and i still go in to work every day!

they want you to stop there and stew in your resentment instead of following the logic forward to hey maybe if i had a union i would have better pay!

and they say stuff like “working conditions” for the same reason because they know it conjures the image of a sweatshop or something and you’re like well that’s absurd writers work in offices how bad could it be they don’t have “working conditions”

they want you to stop there and stew in your resentment because you also work in an office instead of thinking about what the word “conditions” means and whether you are allowed to take off work to be with your newborn child

don’t be fooled by this shit. don’t buy into the idea that people work in any field solely for the love of the game yes even when it’s a literal game (writers work on those too). work is work! money can be exchanged for goods and services!

i think we need to abolish subscriptions. im tired of remembering passwords and giving out my email. check out as guest, no you may not know my name. die

wtf is happening to this site I swear last year they were making all these great improvements like adding tags to the activity page, polls, hell even blaze was well received when it was new & now every update the past few months is absolute garbage like live the new image viewer & removing tap to zoom setting fyp as default for new users. like they saw us being happy with the changes they were making for practically the first time ever & were like "cool now what if we ruined the site"

incredible pompeii book fact that i will think about forever:

Garum, a sort of Roman fish sauce, was everywhere in Rome and apparently Pompeii was particularly famous for their garum industry. There’s lots of sources both in and outside Pompeii, and several different manufacturers and sellers have been found in the city.

The part that I can’t stop thinking about: jars of garum have been found with labels advertising it as kosher.

I mean, of course you hear about the conflicts between the Romans and Jews. They were very much in one another’s orbits. But still, the fact that there was apparently enough of a market in Pompeii to specifically create and sell kosher fish sauce… you know?

my biology professor has such a chaotic energy about him, last week i went to his office hours and somehow we ended up on the topic of gay marriage:

he said that when he lived in texas they changed the law to define marriage as “between a man and a woman in a house of religious worship with the intention to have children” so he filed his taxes as single and when they called him up like “you filed married last year” he was like “you changed the law, i was married by a judge in a courthouse and i have no intention of having kids” and they told him “you know who that law was for” and i guess he hung up on them and did not, in fact, pay taxes as a married man that year

Chaotic good

NO! This is Lawful Good! He is following the LAW! Chaotic doesn’t just mean cheeky!

this is like how Sweden stopped classifying homosexuality as an illness because people started a campaign of calling in gay to work

malicious compliance is one of the best tools in the arsenal of civil rights activism

Always reblog for malicious compliance

sometimes following the letter of the law works even better than ignoring it.

In Utah the new book banning laws apply to the bible, and there’s already someone petitioning to get it removed from schools and libraries.

I hope no English teacher ever puts up with “banning pronouns” for even a moment

One of the things I love about Terry Pratchett is how pro trans his later writing is, which came very naturally from his pro-subversion of assigned gender roles position in his earlier writing. This is the exact kind of development I want to see from my middle aged white men and it's sad how often that simply doesn't happen.

I GOT FROGGED???

Anyway guys don’t let this equivalent of a bunch of car keys dangling in front of a baby to distract you from the fact that Tumblr’s latest update removed the short cut to access people’s reblogs and original posts. Remember to file your complaints through Tumblr’s support ticket system.

Oh for fucks sake

EDIT: It seems Staff just decided to change more shit that’s worked a certain way for about a decade just because…. I dunno…. they’re not stimulated by the 9000 spam bot reports we send daily?

the “old” way is that you clicked on the reblogger’s username and it would take you to the original reblog. this now just takes you to their blog:

the “new” way is that you click on the empty space above the post:

I think @staff grossly underestimated just how many tumblr users routinely use this feature to get rid of dumbass comments at the bottom of bad reblog chain (while preserving the good part of the reblog chain). I spent 5 frustrated minutes clicking random shit before finally working out what I needed to press.

Hey, so, you got beef with Disney? You want to stick it to the mouse? Listen up.

If you're going to a movie theater to see a Disney property (so that's your Disney, your Marvel, your Star Wars, anything), and ESPECIALLY if you want to see it at a small independent theater instead of a big chain,

WAIT TWO WEEKS

Y'see, Disney now demands 100% of box office proceeds for the first two weeks of a new movie's run. Needless to say that's also when the movie gets the most traffic. Theaters are then forced to show the movie longer, taking up a screen, and giving more profits to Disney, just to try and make any profit off the film themselves. If you want to support the theater, wait for two weeks before going to see the movie.

What are the theaters gonna do, say no? If they try, Disney revokes all rights to show Disney movies, permanently or temporarily I'm not sure but both are basically fatal to the theater. Consider just how many movies Disney owns, and how popular every single one is - a monopoly on the industry - and it's easy to see why they can demand anything they want from theaters. The theaters will not survive otherwise. A small theater like mine? Disney dictates how long we have to show a movie, and even which screen we have to show it on and for how long.

So, what can you do?

Well first of all you can wait to see the movie. Two weeks, wait two weeks and at least some of your ticket will goto the theater instead of Disney.

Second of all, buy concessions. Yes I know they're expensive, you want to know why? Because of shit like this. Concessions are the theater's main source of profit. If you're going to a Disney movie in its first two weeks, you better buy at least half your ticket's price in concessions or I will judge you.

Third of all I will not end this post without saying drink up me hearties yoho.

So yeah there's the message I want to spread. Want to stick it to the mouse? Wait two weeks to see the movie in theaters. Want to support your local theater? Buy concessions.

i think as adults it's our responsibility to be nice to kids and treat them with the respect we wish we got at that age and im not kidding or exaggerating in the least

Feminism isn't "Women vs Men"

Feminism is "Us vs The Patriarchy"

And "Us" includes everyone.

the patriarchy is the men btw.

No, it's not. The patriarchy is a system. Women can also enforce the patriarchy. Women can be and often are misogynistic and sexist.

Understanding the difference between a hierarchical system and individual human beings should be feminism 101.

“A daffodil bulb will divide and redivide endlessly. That’s why, like the peony, it is one of the few flowers you can find around abandoned farmhouses, still blooming and increasing in numbers fifty years after the farmer and his wife have moved to heaven, or the other place, Boca Raton. If you dig up a clump when no one is nearby and there is no danger of being shot, you’ll find that there are scores of little bulbs in each clump, the progeny of a dozen or so planted by the farmer’s wife in 1942. If you take these home, separate them, and plant them in your own yard, within a couple of years, you’ll have a hundred daffodils for the mere price of a trespassing fine or imprisonment or both. I had this adventure once, and I consider it one of the great cheap thrills of my gardening career. I am not advocating trespassing, especially on my property, but there is no law against having a shovel in the trunk of your car.”

I clicked the link because I enjoyed this quote and was not disappointed

I don't want a direct sequel to the DnD movie

I want more DnD movies with the same cast, but they play totally different characters every time, except for Xenk, who is the only recurring character in the entire franchise

and he gets the exact same amount of introduction, too.

it's wild that virtually all modern digital infrastructure is built to constantly spy on us and harvast our data for advertising yet online advertsing is still basically worthless and nobody seems to actually be benefitting from all this

a vast rube goldberg machine of privacy violations all working together to deliver the most precisely targeted ads straight into my adblocker

idk when we decided that explaining yourself shouldn't be part of an apology but like. if someone was a dick to me and apologizes but I still don't understand why they did it I'm not gonna feel any better

"Sorry for hurting your feelings earlier. I was trying to say x, but I guess it came across wrong. I don't think you're stupid."

or

"Sorry I snapped at you. I didn't get enough sleep last night so my patience is a little low today."

is a better apology than

"I want you to know that I am sorry that my actions offended you. I take full accountability for my actions and I am listening and learning. I hear you."

dracula truly speaks to the uniquely human-in-a-capitalist-society experience of going through the most horrific events imaginable, being in a terrible situation, and still doing your fucking job lmao
